Yo Troops!
First of all, in the spirit of diplomacy, I'd like to say there are still SOME great bands and music out there these days------you just have to REALLY search for it though...
But having said that, there was a reason why they called that hallowed decade "The Big Eighties". That was a GREAT decade for multicultural/multigenre music. And I MISS it.
I would go so far as to say I haven't heard a single guitarist that is as talented as probably ANY guitarist from back in the eighties.
I knew that it was all over for hard rock/heavy metal when Nirvana came along expressly for the purpose of "outlawing" the use of the "guitar solo". Remember guitar solos? Wow...I sure miss them.
I knew that R&B/hip hop was about to take a fall when singers STOPPED singing entirely original songs-----but instead, opted to sing "new" lyrics over "older" music.
And unfortunately, I knew that Rap was about to take a nose dive when my favorite group (Public Enemy), STOPPED receiving radio airplay again.
Socially conscious (yet still SLAMMING) Rap songs were overwhelmed by corporate America's love for glorifying the more frivolous and negative sides of my community (African American). And the more knuckleheaded rappers that emerged during that time period, then and NOW, GLADLY exploit themselves AND the genre for money's sake alone.
I guess they don't call it the music "BUSINESS" for nothing, do they?
But anyway: LONG LIVE THE BIG EIGHTIES!!!!!!
Anybody know where I can buy me one of those vintage Wham sweatshirts that has "CHOOSE LIFE" written on it?
