What do you guys think about going up 40 lbs over the course of 2 weeks doing nothing but push-ups? I really can't understand how I did it because I only do 30 (*CORRECT*, I go down hold it for about 3 seconds and come back up) push-ups twice a night before I take my shower and go to bed. Then once in a while (like today) I bench in the weight room during lunch at school. I know 2 weeks ago all I could get up was 165 max and now I just maxed 205... has anyone ever heard of this? If not... I suggest giving it a try. As crazy as it seems I think it really works wonders. I'm also not on anything (creatine, protein, the JUICE, etc)

the other day all I did was sit up and down off a chair and that helped me increase my squat from 135 to 585

Yes... big time. I don't know how though that is what I'm trying to figure out. 40 lbs in 2 weeks is a pretty big improvement. Although I was talking to a friend and I did realize something, he told me this and it made a lot of sense... he said that I was re-building muscle and that's a lot easier than building up the first time. I used to get 225 and then I stopped lifting got stretch marks yadda yadda, you guys know the drill. And now I'm lifting 205... I hope I don't hit a plateau though. that'll suck. :(

Rawblood: That's awesome... I hope your 585 is wrong though or else you could like bench a semi probably... ;)

People don't attribute enough of these gains to stabilization or beginning muscle gains. It's very possible he gained 40lbs on a max lift if he was at an untrained level, then started consistantly working those muscles. Any excersize like bench press requires 2 elements to be able to do the movement, the brute muscle strength, and the balance to guide a bar in an unnatural motion. This is the exact reason dumbbell bench and/or localized delt workouts can help max bench miles.

Sad to say, after these stabilization muscles are trained and you start only growing the main part of your chest your gains will sharply drop to 5lbs/10lbs a week or less.

450/135=3.33

So in 24 hours...he was able to lift 3.33 TIMES what he normally put up?

That just sounds absurd.

that's a typo right?
Some might label it a typo, others might call it sarcasm.

Sorry for my extended absence

Sorry I haven't been on here in a while. Been doing to much other sh!t. Well... I know some people said it's crazy and I'm a liar but I swear I'm not. I was just wanting an explanation of what could cause this... you know how you get growth spurts... I thought maybe a strength one? I'm really benching 205 I know that's not a whole lot as one person said which I personally think is bullcrap putting other people down. It's that mentallity that gets people hurt in our weight room people putting other people down and then they try something crazy and they pull muscles and can't lift for a week or so... personally I just tell people that they should be able to do 10 or 20 lbs more than they are doing just to encourage them to do more. If I didn't address your comment I'm really sorry. Don't really have time to type a really long-winded post. And sorry for the conflicts that have arisen from this discussion I just wanted a simple answer and still haven't seen it. (that you can get strength spurts if there is such a thing)

It's possible that your body just needed some rest. I used to work each body part twice a week, allowing about 3 days rest. After switching to a new schedule which allowed 4-5 days rest, I was lifting more across the board. The biggest increase I noticed was my shoulder press... it took me a couple of months to increase from 50x8 to 70x8, but I jumped up to 95x8 after switching to my new routine. That's not to say that muscles just suddenly popped up. They had been there, I just had never given them the opportunity to fully regenerate in between workouts.

What works for one person won't work for another. Combination of lots of things: genetics, diet, athletic history. From what I read, I'd recommend more rest in between workouts.
