What exactly makes a woman a "cougar"?

I been wondering about this since the meaning is so vague, like an older woman going for a younger guy who is like a decade younger than her.

Right now in my circle I have a friend who is 33 y/o and shagging a woman who is 47 but really attractive for her age, like pornstar level attractive. People keep saying she is a "cougar" because there is more than a decade of an age gap. However, my friend is freaking 33 which is an adult male IMO.

I always thought cougar was like an older woman who went for super young guys, like those school teachers who get busted for sleeping with their HS students.

Compiling a full list of the traits which indicate you're in the presence of a cougar would be an exhaustive venture, one that I'm not currently motivated enough to undetake. For starters though, any broad who's:

-Named Natasha Kinski

-Starred in Paul Schrader's remake of Cat People

Is already exhibiting bright red flags. A dude figuratively and literally enters that s-it at immense peril to himself

It's mostly situational, but if the woman is old enough to be your mom she's a "cougar". If she's just 10-12 years older or so, she's an "older woman".

In your friend's case Jesse, he's banging an "older woman". The age ratio 47/33 is throwing people off, but it's still only a 14 year gap.

But if they're both latin, I can see why people would think she's old enough to be his mom. LMAO.

And if this is happening in rural Appalachia, gal may really be the dude in question's mother

So if the guy is over 30, she cannot ever be a "cougar", he has to be under 30.

Huh...strange since I feel like late 20s dudes are more like early 30s dudes than early 20s dudes.

This stuff is so confusing

A cougar is any women over 30. Has nothing to do with if she is with a guy, how the old the guy, or anything.

Over 30 = cougar.

Hi BadBoy,
Our vocabulary is constantly evolving,it all comes down to usage, but the very word "Cougar"does suggest a predatorial nature.

I cannot for the life of me answer why this question is in my head. I guess as I am pushing into my 30s, I am trying to make sense of it all. It is the porn, that is what it is. Guess I want that porn life experience.

Just comes to show you how powerful media is even to men. Decades ago, we would have spit at the idea of sleeping with an old hag. Now? Dudes want that cougar experience.

30s is a very funny place to be as a man.

I know it sounds weird to consider the guy’s age too. But otherwise it becomes problematic. If we define cougar as 35+ or say 40+ woman, what happens when she dates a guy of comparable age?

If a 47 yo guy dates a 46 yo woman, is the guy really a “cougar chaser,” or is he simply dating close to his age?

All that aside, it’s just some pop culture slang without a precise universally agreed upon definition. It doesn’t really matter.

^^^^This is how I've always thought of it.

Like the whole Mrs. Robinson thing from The Graduate (a movie the young bucks will have little idea about - but a good flick.)

People on occassion will call me a cougar because I'm almost 8 years older than my husband, I've always found that odd since we are both Gen X and same cultural/generational refs etc.

If people say that I always think 'Nah, you're jealous' and do an eyeroll to myself. We look similar in age so it's certainly not an obvious sort of thing with us.

With a cougar its pretty obvious. Demi Moore/Ashton Kutcher was considered a cougar by many. She is 15 years older, so that's becoming a generation gap. She'd be borderline by the above definition.

No, that would be conventional and expected. He's dating close to his own age.

Borderline cougar to me.

That's a cougar like situation. I think a cougar like situation is 10+ years older. It does typically happen with guys under 30.

It's not that difficult. Cougars are menopausal women chasing barely legal boys. Or sometimes younger. They're not interested in mature men.

My former babysitter, who at 17 led 11 year old me into the master bedroom while Mummy and Daddy were in Cabo for the weekend, for 48 hours of live fire sex ed, would've been delighted to hear: "Relax... You're just a pedo, not a cougar" ;)

Now that I kind of think about it, I think it is about vibe as much as it is age. Like I know dudes in their early 20s that have already aged like crap. I am talking receding hairline, balding, bad skin, etc. Meanwhile, I see dudes in their 30s that look youthful AF. It is such a tough thing to distinguish with age.

IMO, I think the standard is 10 years younger or more, that makes the most sense. Especially in this era when growing up is sort of in the backburner.

The definition I'm aware of for cougar (and let's face it: I know a thing or two about cougars ) is: A woman who's middle-aged (or above) with a double digit age gap. In which case, 47/33 qualifies (even if the age gap isn't as extreme as some cougars)

By the way, even though it's often been said on this forum that hardly any woman is on board with a cougar-esque age gap, it's more common than it gets credit for. Even I (a socially inept autist with all sorts of baggage) have gotten several broads more than a decade my senior to drop their panties for me (for free)

Imagine what a more socially skilled young guy is capable of (in terms of getting a cougar)
