True, my marriage started to have issues around 7 years being together. Tried to work through it, she wasn't talking. Tried a few marriage counselors, she didn't like them (wonder why), so I filed for divorce. Waste of time. I see little point in it. I think kids would be better if both parents are in the picture and under one roof. I do not see what a piece of paper does to help kids become better adults. All I see is attorneys getting richer over two people; usually one wanting to leave, the other trying to just hurt them anyway possible. There's no benefit for the guy anymore. If they'd remove the asset distribution and alimony; then I'd consider it.

The article cites a divorce rate being as a 20 year low. The divorce rate is a misleading statistic. It's a measure of the number of divorces in a year relative to the number of marriages in a year. It's a divorce to marriage ratio and it doesn't mean much.

What you really want to consider is the percentage of marriages that reach 5, 10, 15 years, etc. in length. The probably of a divorce happening at any point is still as high if not higher,

Fewer people are getting married, which has been going on for a while but still most people get married at least once before they turn 50.

Not that easy. Reason being, the wife many times, is out the hurt the husband. The husband wants to avoid lawyers and the court, the wife knows that will hurt him financially. When I was married, I had placed in the pre-nup, "should a divorce happen, each party will be 100% responsible for their own legal counsel and costs. At no time, will the other spouse be compelled or forced upon to pay for the other party's legal costs by said spouse, court or legal mandate." Many of my terms that were placed in the pre-nup her lawyer didn't want her to sign; but she did. Reason being, I was fine in ending it and walking away. Nonetheless, prior to filing for divorce, I offered her a uncontested self filed divorce. I covered all fees, her moving expenses and 5k just to sign and leave. She also was able to keep all the wedding gifts. She refused, I filed for divorce, had her move out and for 2 years we were in court. Cost me around 20k or so in legal fees, cost her around 16k or so in legal fees. From what I last heard, she's had money issues and all her savings are blown.

Case-in-point, females work off of emotion, dudes work off logic because many times they know what's coming down the pike.

So, either way, the dude will eventually lose something and get screwed. The only way to minimize this is to have an iron-clad pre-nup, and if they have assets, an iron-clad irrevocable trust. I had to offer something in mine, so I offered to split the co-mingled account 50/50 (never used it, 80% her money), and should we purchase a place together, that would be split equitably. This never happened either, as she never had the funds for the half down deposit. I get everything else separate and stated that separate funds and assets would remain separate unless either part co-mingled those funds. It really wasn't one sided, but it can be viewed that it was slanted towards me since I had more assets. However, since she made more money, no court would see it that way. She was also responsible for her own legal costs to review the pre-nup and cohabitation agreement too. So, if it didn't work out, which it didn't, I lost were the legal fees from the divorce and the wedding gifts. Since I took the large checks to reimburse myself for the wedding expenses, I really did okay. Just the stress from dealing with these lawyers was unreal. Again, in general, dudes do not want to hurt the wife, but the wife wants the husband to suffer. There are legal ways to make sure the financial and legal pain is minimal. However, one would hope to try and not hurt the other person.

Yes and no. Depends on equitable property state vs community property state. In addition, depends on any legal agreements put in place. Trusts and pre-nups can help lessen the blow financially. Most people do not put in place that each person would have to pay for their own legal fees within a pre-nup. Usually, when a marriage fails and there is a pre-nup, they do not include that little requirement. Trust when I say it means the world. Reason being, if she has to pay for her own legal fees and expenses, she'll come to the table and settle real quick. Lawyers are not going to point it out, as it hurts them with less business.
