At 47 you need TRT, Neil. Experiment with some doses, start with 500 mg a week, this is what Im gonna do when I get a little older. If you could get HGH as well it would help incredibly with fat loss and muscle gain at the same time. You got the money for some good sources so, thank me later.

Hgh runs the risk of acromegaly. Not healthy in my book and you end up with that enlarged featues look, hands forehead etc. Think rich piana.

Tell the trainer you want your money back. Most trainers don't actually train for results because they would rather be safe and not push their clients hard to keep them coming back than push their clients hard and make them quit.

He isn't pushing you hard enough or you aren't making him push you hard enough. Until one of those happens your results aren't going to change. And if I'm being honest, for 6 months in those results are terrible. No muscle definition at all.

Getting in great shape is hard work. It causes pain. Are you willing to feel like you have been run over by a truck 6 days a week? To hurt so bad that you can barely bend down to pick up something you dropped on the floor because you are so sore?

This is what keeps people from being in shape...they aren't willing to pay the price.
I second this. It has to hurt to sit down, stand, move, etc. However, I wouldn't say to do this all the time though marmel because that could burn out his CNS. Plus, maybe he was much worse off 6 months ago, we don't have a before pic.

I'd have to say to do full body workouts that cause you to SWEAT a crapton rather than weight-training specifically. Building muscle isn't what you need right now, I'd say it's losing fat. So more full body workouts, most likely calisthenics since it would be the least strain on on your joints at your age, maybe a little bit of plyometrics, and then some *GASP* cardio too. That's just gonna be to add the most basic stress on your body. If you are only exercising 3 or 4 times a week, then I'd say to up the intensity every week for about 6 weeks ± 2 weeks. Then switch it to upper and lower body with the same intensity for another 8-10 weeks with deloads/rest/stretch days taken as necessary. You've built the basis for better than average fitness at this point and I'd tell you to only do some kind of cardio that's easier on the joints, such as swimming for example. Cycling is fine, but it doesn't cause an increase in sexual performance for whatever reason no matter how fit you get doing it. Do this for about a week or two after and then get back into the upper/lower split that you've been doing for another 3 weeks ± 1 week. Then get into some real hardcore weightlifting. I personally like the legs/push/pull split the best, as I train for strength and compound exercises promote strength more so than isolation (compound meaning activating more than one muscle at a time e.g. bench press, pull-ups, squats; isolation meaning only one muscle at a time e.g. curls, leg extensions, tricep extensions). After this just keep lifting with whatever split your trainer tells you to do and then just come back when it's been 6 months again. If you actually work hard with something like this, you'll see very noticeable results.

If you have been working out more than 4 times a week, then I'd tell your trainer to up the intensity a LOT because you should have at least some muscle definition by now after 6 months of training. Only if you've been working out for more than 4 days a week though.

Neil you don't need any testosterone or hormone treatment, even in your forties. Just weightlifting while eating lots of meat, eggs, and healthy fats, while restricting your carb and sugar intake and getting lots of sleep will be all you need.
Not eating enough carbs messes up your hormones a crap ton though and can cause decreases in anabolic hormones.

Its all great advice guys, its just that in a 24 hour day there is only so much will power any given person has. We all know that for maximum results you need to weigh your food, count your calories and macroes, get enough sleep, little stress. How many people are high achievers with no stress, perfect diet, lots of heavy weightlifting, lots of sleep? Not to mention Neil enjoys women!

A 47 year old would know what is realistic to accomplish at this point in his life. There are ofc no shortcuts, and the typical thing with training is to go all in for a few months then drop out.

Imo, if he does TRT under a doctors supervision, he should feel better and the fat would come off easier while maintaining muscle mass without looking like a complete cancer patient.

I think your bf calculations are off. I was your shape at about 22-25% BF. At 13-15% abs start to show and besides some loose skin in the mid 40s the belly should be well retracting.

What do you do in your non trainer days? Do you own a kettlebell? I would get up to 300 KB swings per day and watch the fat melt off.

Still the diet and cardio will need to be done. It's a repetitive task, day by day, piece by piece... Measuring food isn't that big a deal... I think he should go at it hard for 3-6 months, then to adjust his dietery and workout system so he can have a day of food and drink pleasure. It won't be every day or most days that's for sure. You eat clean and you'll stay lean. The 30 minutes of cardio to start the day becomes like coffee to you, an enhancement, not even a lot of work. Instead of doing 2 hrs of cardio just don't put garbage in your face, pretty simple.

Fasted HITT cardio first thing in the morning with BCAA's and no alcohol will help a lot. I had a pro body builder put together a diet for me last summer
225g protein 150 carbs 50 fats. I would cycle the carbs down to 50 several days a week

Me too. He looks closer to 18% than 12%. The personal trainer may be fudging numbers to keep his business.

Neil, if you were a fighter, I would tell you to make weight at 185. That means walking around at about 195. Fighters are skinny, though. That's obviously not everyone's concept of fitness.

He looks like 20-25% to me, perhaps 22%. It's too high whatever it is, and no way 12% because the abs would be somewhat visible. Forget about body fat percentage number and look at how cut you are and your musculature. At 7% they see cross striations on pecs, delts, the obliques and every thing else.

10% is good for most intensive purposes, but you can see abs and they look decent flexed.

Just drop fat man, your fat accept it and take care of the issue.

You look better than my ex did and definitely nothing to be ashamed of for a 47 year old man. I can see why you would want to take it further tho.

coolsculpting will get rid of whatever pooches you want to rid yourself of, and should sculpt your jawline (you'd need a consult to be sure). Then you can build your muscle to show off the n-pack that cool sculpting revealed. I'm hallelujah-ing that my neck is tight, for sure.

Also, about a year and a half ago I started drinking a veggie smoothie for breakfast. Radishes, carrots, celery, kale, cilantro, parsley almond milk and greek yogurt, blended. it's a bit chewy but i swear my skin has never looked better. I was already at zero noticeable wrinkles and have managed to retain that.

I think your bf is more like 20%. Do P90x and do yoga. Need to cut down on alcohol and do some ab exercises.

Yep. Even in 30 days our bigneil will be down 8-12 lbs of body fat. But the key will be the no alcohol and doing the cardio every single day.
