Latest word is that the Xbox 360 will be released in differing versions over the next five years. The hard drive has been an area of discussion, analysts predict that the console will launch in two varieties, one with and one without a hard drive.

Supposedly, developers have been told not to rely on the hard drive. We could assume that the primary use of the storage will be for added multimedia functionality that Microsoft has up its sleeve. It has also been rumoured that later versions of the Xbox 360 will be shipped with the added benefit of an HD-DVD drive.
It'll launch with a hard drive. They may decide to make it an addon later though.

ps3 2006 or 2007

a full 2 years go by and technology gets bigger and better

ps2

xbox came out afterwards so it had the advantage

sony is trying to reverse that with their ps3 strategy

I guess you guys have heard:

299 US / Euros
For basic box (presumably with wired controller)

399 ditto
For wireless controller and HD

the "core" system can be uprgraded to the other simply by adding the controller and disk

Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox 360 game console would cost $299USD to $399USD when it is released.

The $299 version will come with a wired controller, but will not have the 20-gigabyte hard-disc drive, wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable and wireless television remote control included in the $399 version.

No. Xbox 360 comes out at the end of October of this year. PS3 is coming out mid-March 2006. The specs should be similar.

And last I heard the HDD was going to be in all of them, but it's going to be a removable 20-gig though. I could be wrong about that though.

Damn, no one even mentioned the Nintendo Revolution. Man I hope they don't end up the way sega did. Im just curious what Nintendo is gonna come up to survive the 360 and the Ps3.

familyguyfan why should they be similar ?

1 year is a long time in the computer world

and ps2 is 2006 OR 2007. SONY haven't committed to 2006 or a release date from the last interview i read on IGN.com

also if you look at the specs for both that are being considered you will see a difference

also take into account the price drop in computer components over a 1 year period

microsft is still losing $$$ per xbox console sold

the new offering from Nintendo has me interested.

i just hope Nintendo get their act together and connect with they old fanbase from the Super Nintendo / Famicon days

:D

Look at that link. It's from August 2nd, so it's pretty recent. While that DOES say that Sony may wait to release PS3 until 2007, it also means that they're going to be done with it well before then.

As it currently stands, PS3 will be out at the end of March in Japan. Which is only a ~6 month advantage to the Xbox 360. Though it isn't supposed to come out in the US until the end of 2006, it's not like they can add anything to it once it's already out in Japan. Plus, it's highly likely that both systems are done being built. They're probably both in the stage of just working out the tweaks. And though you could say that they may have started building the PS3 later, giving it an advantage in technology, everything I read in the past indicates that they were both being built around the same time. When they release the two systems is all about timing and which company thinks they'll make more money due to when they release them. So, based on all of that, the specs should be similar.

there won't be any major upgrades between now and the time the PS3 is launched there Lost. The design scheme of the PS3 is the same platform that sony will be using in it's computer line up as well. MS got to work on the 360 almost five years ago and sony has had plans to make PS1-8 or something so I doubt they'll spend much more time on this platform.

In anyevent I doubt the early release of XBox 360 will have too much of an impact in any market besides the US. In the japanese market (still the deepest in terms of gaming) only 5% of consumers plan to buy an Xbox while some 65% plan on buying PS3's and 80% plan on buying nintendo revs. I doubt microsoft will have many more third party developers for games but they really don't need too many more anyway. But anyway that's where the money is. F*ck the price of the console or who loses what with each console sale. What it boils down to is who is going to produce the most games that cost very little and they each sell for 50+dollars to the public, the money's in the software. I think Sony's fan base and loyalist really set them apart from the gaming community and even with the grand scheme o realasing Halo 3 on the debut of PS3, MS will find this fight to be as hard if not harder then the previous console war.
