Also, if you're more scared of getting Herpes than HIV, there's something seriously wrong with your ranking system. The one gives you a rash - admittedly uncomfortable and somewhat embarrassing - and the other one kills you. I know which one I'd chose.
More afraid of HSV as opposed to HIV/AIDS simply because it's exponentially easier to contract HSV. The overwhelming majority of people that contract HIV do so through the sharing of foreign objects such as needles, NOT sex. Your chances of contracting HIV by sleeping with random women, unprotected, are extremely slim even if you mistakenly had sexual contact with several who are carriers. The use of condoms reduce that risk even more. Herpes on the other hand is highly contagious and condoms won't (not even close) entirely prevent transmission.

I hope you're aware that around 25% (yes about 1 out of 4) females in the United States carry that herpes bull****. It would be very unwise to see it as nothing more then an inconvenient itch. There's a reason why those who display little to no symptoms are considered "lucky". Did you also know that herpes does in fact make it significantly easier to contract HIV? I'm not going to have a pointless debate about which virus is better having as I'd rather have none. I'll leave that one up to you and your "superior" ranking system.

a yr after we stopped talking she told me she got tested for herpes

You need to get her to tell you more. Did she have an outbreak that made her go to the doctor? Does she still get recurring outbreaks? If those two answers are yes, then those would be the most unfavorable odds for you. That would mean she got the virus fairly recently and it's still strong in her body, which is bad for you.

However, if she just got a test for the hsv antibodies on a whim, without ever getting an outbreak or infecting anyone, then that's a different story. The strength of the virus in her would be so low, that I personally would question if it's even really there. I think the antibody test is designed to sell medication to people who don't need it. All sexually active women are going to test positive for HPV, but it's not like we all have genital warts. The strength of a virus within someone's body, and thus it's transferability, is a complex immune system calculation that is different for everyone, and also different over time.

You can even catch herpes from someone who doesn't have open sores or signs of the infection. Although most people who first contract herpes have their first outbreak 2-10 days after coming into contact with the virus, it's possible to have the virus in your system for several months or sometimes years before a primary outbreak occurs.
