I just started this 5x5 workout:

http://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5-beginner-strength-training-program/

I do the A and B sessions listed on the URL above. I am currently 5'9'' 142 (I have gained 9 lbs. in two months!), and my goal is 5'9'' 160 with sixpack (I will have to lose the small spare tire so I guess I should get to like 167 or so then do short HIIT sprints?). Anyway, I was just wondering if the A and B workout sessions include everything I should be doing. I value the oppinion of the people on this site more than any other for workout advice, you guys are amazing and know wtf you are talking about.

Thanks.

One more question I did not see in the vault... I understand how to cut carbs but when you hit 1600 and lose the fat, how do you bring your carb intake back up, or do you take it back up at all? If you do take it back up, do you just start eating as much as you were, or do you level it up similar to the way you leveled it down?

Thanks again.

The routine is good, but I think Rippetoe is better. It will do the job, but youre likely to stall faster on it.

As far as carbs are concerned, it is very indvidual. Keep them around periods of activity, on days off consume minmal amounts and have a carb cutoff 4 hours + before bed. Don't go overboard and eat insane amounts when you do eat them as well. Also, try to stick to the less sugary stuff that isn't going to spike your insulin levels.

If you notice yourself getting fatter, adjust the carbs downwards again.

Agree with the above poster. The routine seems to take something tried and tested (Rippetoes) and add adjustments that make it less effective (more volume on the big heavy lifts) and then say they came up with something new.

I'd stick to Rippetoes.

Men frequently err by talking too much. They often monopolize conversations, droning on and on about topics that bore women to tears. They think they're impressing the women when, in reality, they're depressing the women.

I like 5x5 routine more then ripptoes, I dont know about you but I cant do squats and deadlifts in the same day, plus when you are suppose to add weight each time that means you are giving or should be giving 110% each lift.

I dont know about you but squats 5x5 takes so much energy out of me it's not even funny, and to add to that I would have to do deadlifts right after!! I support 5x5.

Oh and I dont do squats and deads on the same day if anyone didnt catch that.

The routine is fine. In terms of your goal of being 160 with a six pack..the easiest way would be to get up to the 170-175 range via eating and training hard, then bring down the body fat(which is easy to take off). Still use a carb cut off 3-4 hours before bed.

Also that doesn't mean be a fat 170-175lbs more like at 15-17%bf. This way you'll be eating enough, getting stronger, building muscle, and when the fat comes off you'll have a good amount of muscle to show at 160.
