Hey guys,

I would really appreciate your input on my current work situation. Little back ground, currently in my second sales job since I graduated college where I'm doing very well. Consistently one of the top 3 producers in the company month after month with virtually no sales experience. I love the job, the product I sell and the sense of accomplishment from closing a deal.

HOWEVER, the ethics at this company is severely lacking. Not only do managers use fear tactics and fake job threats, they blantantly disrespect reps from time to time in front of the entire sales floor.

As I started working there I was somewhat naive to the whole process, but slowly have started to see the cookie crumble in front of my face. I've watched countless reps leave after having record months and didn't really understand why until today.

My direct sales manager and I became pretty close at one point. He's a brillant teacher and very good at what he does. On one hand he paints the picture that he goes to bat for me when I've been in question. Feeding me information that our VP told him regarding me and other people etc.

On the other hand he is a very inappropriate, HR nightmare in his behavior at and away from work. Just since I've known him he has:

-made strong sexual passes at two of our co-workers at happy hour, describing in detail what he would do to them sexually. One of the girl's mom's TRAINED HIM in sexual harrassment!!

-made another sexual pass at an account manager, who looked him in the face and told him "your creepy"

-constantly hugs the girl reps who make a sale and also hugs them when the arrive and leave in the morning.

-he was also fuvkin' a girl who recently got fired for not hitting her number and now he admitted that they are dating. He use to stay late and help us on appointments, ever since he's been dating this chick, he leaves right at 5 and uses the excuse of having to pick up his daugther. He never had to pick up his daugther 5x a week for the past 9 months....

Over the past few months I started to believe less and less of what he said, and realized that he was ulitmately a master at manipulation....duh he's a sales manager! Not to mention that he constantly treats me like $hit, I'm at 150% to my quota and he's yelling at me for "relaxing" for one day!!!

So this month we were holding a contest. The top two revenue producers for the first two weeks of the month, win an all expenses paid trip to an incredible trade show next month. Well, I was in solid grasp of the number 2 slot the entire time and ended up having a killer week to solidify my grip on that spot. I walk into the office this morning and check the daily sales number MAGICALLY a girl who was in 5th suddenly was in the number 2 slot!

I look through the accounts sold list and see that he GAVE HER a $2,000 deal. I ask him about it professionally and politely and he admits that he GAVE HER the deal because she was waaaaaaaaaaay behind her number and she has NEVER not hit her number. Mind you she has only been there for 4.5 months. Now this girl is a great worker and took on added responsiblity this month with helping to train some new employees.

However how convienent of him to GIVE HER the deal on the last day of the contest! I ask him about all this and he BLATANTLY LIES to my face!!! Saying:

-oh I didn't even know about the contest!! (That's bull**** we get an email EVERYDAY from our marketing department with the updated standings

I ask him why did he decide to give the deal to her now and not at the end of the month? He stuttered and avoids eye contact and says, he wasn't even thinking about. She was pacing to her goal and we were just half way throught the month.

He then tells me it was a direct order from our CEO! LOL, what a crock of $hit. When I call him on that, he back tracks and says, "ummm ummm... I decided to give her the deal, but our CEO wanted both the girls to go to the trade show."

He then like any sales manager tries to turn it around on me, by feeding me some bullshyt about our finance department giving us heat for reps who didn't perform. Get this, he says if a rep doesn't hit their quota for a month, it takes 3 months of them hitting their goal to make up for their cost to the company!! LOL.... I can't believe he thought I was that stupid to believe his lies.

He then tells me the trade shows aren't even that great, to try and talk me out of wanting to go. Hmmmm funny how he picked himself to go to the one in Hawaii in a couple months.....why go if they aren't worth it??

Okay, so I'll get to the point: My manager has completely violated my trust in him today. I suspected a lot of this before, but he is completely a chump to pu$$y and is a divorced, desperate guy. Willing to throw a top performing rep by the way side to make a girl happy.

He has constantly asked me for advice on gaming girls and always says "all the girls love you because your blessed with good looks." I definitely sense a strong bit of resentment from him, due to the female attention I get at work on top of all this $hit.

I understand office politcs exists everywhere, however to take the verbal abuse that I do, and consistently hit my number THEN get SHAFTED outta a contest I rightfully won?? That's just too much for me to want to even continue at a unethical SH-IT hole like this....

There's much more to his lies and abuse, but you guys get the bigger picture. I have plenty of other job offers, so finding a new job won't be hard, especially since I'm not commanding too high of a salary and primarily work on commission.

How would you react? And to those of you in sales.......have you encountered a situation like this???

Sounds like you can't trust this guy anymore. How can you work for someone who sounds like he'll knife you in the back the first chance he gets?

Get out, even if it's just for piece of mind. Of course, make sure you have a golden parachute.

EXACTLY!!! I talked to one of our former employees today. He was the top producer the month before he quit. When I told him about today, he said my manager's tactics and manipulation are the same reason he left.

I do have one option. I can ask to move teams and work for another manager. Not sure if that would work or if that would be uncomfortable since we would all still be in the same sales room.

But who's to say that won't be more of the same???

These kinds of managers have a way of driving out all of the good employees and then they wonder why no one ever stays working for them. In the end they'll only have sh!tty people working in their sales department and then wonder why.

Run fast, run far.

Pimp,

He's using the 'power' of his position to get over on people. Big surprise! He's supposed to use that for the benefit of the company. And, if he was smart, (obviously a false hope) he would lead you all to higher performance with benefits for everyone - clients, company, customers)

But 'little people' can't do that. And nearly everyone falls for it. They mistake the position for their own. And, like Luthor said, they dumb down the organization and wreck its performance by driving talent out.

Its all about them you see. Despite how stupid that is, its ubiquitous. That's why Lord Acton said: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Best to learn how to deal with this. You won't escape it until you're on your own. I went 'Ronin' 7 years back and I won't ever go back. Even with this, my clients will run games on me. But its easier to control.

Bide your time, but get out. Nothing good's going to happen there with this guy around. There are a few good managers out there. But you'll never know until you work for them.

Plan, arrange, and put into action a scenario where he blatantly shows his a$$ in front of upper management and the entire company (ie: cops show up to arrest him for conveniently located drug/porn stash, anonymous sexual harassment claims handwritten by different females you know away from work, etc.), and their only recourse is to fire him.

All of life's a stage.

Why not just avoid the guy and buddy up with another ambitions sales guy in your office. I mean if you like your job and selling your product, then your manager should be an after thought.

I've worked sales and marketing for years. There's always going to be something shady or someone you don't like in just about every office you work in. It's the nature of sales and marketing, expect a side of drama with your lettuce sandwich.

I've found it's much more bearable to create your own diode or following to boost yourself along by sticking with like minded people instead of pandering to a manager or anyone else you don't get along with. This way the positive thought and tips you have for one another increases all of your sales and your group look like super stars. If you can keep it up long enough you can get the right persons attention and advance to another level.

This place sounds like fun. Seriously. Milk it. You will laugh hoarsley about this place in the years to come.
Lots of fvcking, sexual harrassment, maniuplation, lies blah blah blah.

They make movies out of this sort of sh!t.
Stay long enough to write a screenplay, sell it to Hollywood, retire young.

Don't be surprised if this manager one day throws you under the bus to save his own ass.

Your situation sounds like it came from the movie "Glengarry Glen Ross". In the end your manager is probably going to get into a real big trouble and possibly get fired if he keeps this up.

All’s fair in love and war.

You work in a volatile environment, don’t be surprised if people in 'sales' will pass you up for the next opportunity.

You can’t make a sales job into a professional career, it’s a fast track way to make money, but loyalty in that field is not something that goes hand in hand.

Little Update On This Situation:

I was all set to give me notice and move on after this circus show...

My VP of Sales found out that I was considering leaving (didn't know specifically why, just that I was not happy) and promised me that things are changing and he's aware of what's been going on from several different sources. It started because one other rep was threatening to quit because he was very displeased with that manager as well, and he threw my name into the mix... LOL

Apparently I'm not the first person to be dis-pleased with that sales manager, shocker!!!

Two other sales reps recently got promoted to sales managers and we had a draft of sorts. One of the newer managers who I have a great relationship picked me. So I moved to a new team and am KILLING IT!

Tied a company record last week closing 3 deals in one day!

As for my former sales manager I covered my @ss pretty well. I told him that I was very appreciative of all the coaching and help he gave me, but felt that our friendship was starting to blur the line between manager and employee. He was cool about it and we still talk and I don't have to deal with his $hit anymore.

I'm extremely happy with the new set up and my VP told me I'm on track to move into management with my performance and said he's extremely proud of me. I take all that with a grain of salt, sales is sales, but nonetheless I'm glad something changed.

Thanks for all your replies and advice.... I'm sure I could've handled this situation a little better, but I'm happy with the outcome.
