Women already don't care much about their looks in terms of what men want, considering how rare skinny women are now and how retarded their fashion has become. Most men don't even like makeup either yet they wear a ton of it. Much of what women do with regards to their appearance is to comform with women or to impress/make them jealous.

I am also starting to suspect that their claim of dressing "for themselves" may not be entirely off base either, attractive women admit to how much time they spend looking through their own instagram posts and we've all seen how much time they spend looking at themselves in the mirror.

This isn't to say all or most women aren't also trying to impress men either, though. Since their entire strategy is being in proximinity to high value men, using their looks to cultivate this passivity also makes sense.

Conventional wisdom says that women dress to try to impress other women, and I can't disagree with that. It's sort of a rivalry thing, like men are competitive also. But the idea of being able to attract men is in there also.

Women either need offspring or resources, so they have to put effort into their looks to get either / or

I think the women take care of their looks for their self esteem, to impress other women and to impress guys. The proportions of these 3 will be unique to each woman, and I think it also varies depending on her age/relationship status.

Yes. There are plenty of mediocre to subpar looking women who have plenty of men pursuing them.

There are overweight single moms who aren't lacking for quantity of male options.

The reality is that the majority of a woman's SMV is her looks. A woman's personality matters to a lesser degree.

Gen Y/Millennial women have bought into the mantra of feminism that their intellect and career achievements matter. A woman's educational attainment level means almost nothing to her SMV and the same goes for her career achievements. Gen Y/Millennial women are over educated, over obsessed with their careers (if they have a bachelor's degree +), and are having less children.

I am firm believer that women mirror the men around them. A lot of American women are slobs and dress like shvt, but also the men are slobs and dress like shvt. In Europe, I noticed that the men on average are more presentable and care more about personal hygiene and you see it reflected on the women there too.

Why do women value their personal looks so much?

Because they're socially conditioned from a young age to understand pretty privilege and how attention works

Women have always been primarily valued by society depending on their beauty it's only recently have we have seen a push from them too try and add extra strings to their bows and even then a lot still primarily just default to competing on beauty

If you put a group of women that don't know each other in the same room and make sure their all dolled up , the assessing and competitiveness almost immediately starts.

Who 's outfit is best , who's hair is best , who has the most confidence etc etc

Put a handful of males in there and you'll really start to see their true nature although 9/10 the behaviour is always subtle or indirect

Women can be very complex but if you want to put them in their place simply show up with a more attractive woman

It's interesting because I remember reading a study before and it was basically asking a group of women wether they liked pictures of other women

Almost always the women with more attractive pictures got negative reactions even though they were complete strangers

I agree with all of this^^. And find it quite insightful actually.

Speaking only for myself and I've pretty much always felt this way, I take care of my looks for ME (my own self-esteem) as when I "look" my best, I "feel" my best, I'm at my best self!

Thus I can be a better and happier partner, friend, sister and person!

Don't you guys take care of your looks (working out, etc) for the same reason? To be at your best selves?

Sure there are insecure women who do so to compete with other women and attract the lustful attention of thirsty men. I personally know such women! Not friends just acquaintances.

But if a woman is centered with a decent level of self-esteem, she doesn't need to compete with other women and she knows that she doesn't need to look like a glamour girl to attract men.

Not a brag but only to make a point, I can go to the market wearing leggings, a tee and sneaks with hair in pony wearing a baseball cap and I'll get approached!

In fact I get approached more when dressed down and not having made much effort!

That said do I want to please/impress my boyfriend? Yes absolutely! So I make a lot of effort to look and be at my best for him.

Re impressing other women, my friends? No I can honestly say I don't give a rats rear end about that. Never have.

But again I DO know plenty of women who do but it's not an absolute.

Re my friends, we accept each other no matter what we look like that day.
