Yo dawg...I'm 6'3" too and about three months ago I couldn't dunk either. I was really close though...I only needed 1-2 more inches. What I did was 200-250 calf raises every night. Now, I'm flushing it with no problem whatsoever. This is no miracle, though, so you have to already be close to dunking...it will add a few inches to your vert. Other than that, just work out your legs.

Visualization can usually add a few inches to your vertical. Before you go up to dunk, look at the hoop and imagin yourself dunking.

The same idea can work for a lot of things actually. From sports, to video games, to picking up girls.

I have been told alot lately that I'm like 6'4, but I measured myself the other day and I'm only 6'1.

I have a friend that is 6' and when we hold our arms up, he has got 2 inches on me! I can dunk, he can't, or at least I used to be able to dunk, I haven't been ballin in about a year.

I used to get up enough to dunk easy, but my arms are short and I can't palm a ball. I used to have to either do it with two hands, or cuff it. Everybody thought it was so cool that I cuffed it when I dunked, but I just couldn't palm it.

I'm white. Hops aren't something I was born with, I still don't think I really had any hops when I was dunking back in the day. But I got my hops by doing jumping squats, calve raises, and sprints, along with balling every day for a few hours.

The reason I'm so skinny now is because of all the cardio I got from playing ball all day every day.

I plan on getting back into as a hobby once I get some pounds on me.

But like Shiftkey said, alot of it is in your head.

Try to just run up to the rim and grab it, but don't grab it till your jump reaches its peak, try to get your head above the rim. Do this without a ball. It will show you just how high you really can jump, and give you confidence in your jumping ability.

haha!

I don't know anyone that can get their head above the rim. I just mean that you should try to get your head above the rim.

That way your gonna jump as hard as you can trying to reach that goal, even though its pretty much a ridiculous goal!

It can't possibly hurt to try and jump high enough to get your head above the rim.

There's a good workout routine at www.jumpingadvasntage.com I am currently doing this program and it's pretty damn cheap. a lot of info for $20. Very good material. This guy knows what he's talking about and NO FUNKY SHOES!

question to dunkers

Okay to all the people that can dunk, are you normal footed (you leap for the dunk off one foot), or flat-footed (you run stop and jump with both feet). Cause people are different, Jason Richardson is flat footed and he can do alley-oop reverse, through the leg, left-handed dunks.

I'm working on dunking right now too, I'm 6'2 and ASIAN, I can easily grab rim and hang without hurting my hand, but I'm off 2-3 inches form dunking, I can do reverse rim grabs, 180 rim grabs, two-handed rim grabs, but I just can't get it with the ball. If you got big hands it makes it 5x easier. But if you think you would be able to dunk if it werent for the ball try alley-ooping yourself so that you dont gotta dribble to the hoop or travel.

A friend of mine and I are both determined to dunk in 2 months time. Gunna go through intensive leg muscles to go with my normal workout, but I guarantee that I will be dunking WITHIN 2 months. It'll be cool, the only asian in the city that can dunk, hahaha. I'm seirous I don't know any other asians that can dunk.

To the guy that is 6'3 and can't dunk, how much do you weigh, and do you workout? Some tall people naturally cant leave their feet, its just that way. There's a high school freshmen at my old high school that was 7'2 but he couldn't get more than 4 inches off the floor. He was out-of-shape though.

I'm 5'10" and used to dunk without any problem. Although I was lighter back then.

Plyometrics is the key.

Shiftkey is right; visualization helps. I use to tell a friend that imagine that you are being chased by Cujo and there's a 10-foot fence that you need to climb over.

why everybody in high school age that can dunk, can only do it by jumping off 2 feet?! wouldn't it be easier to jump off one foot like most professional basketball players do?

If you can't dunk by the time you're 17/18, you will have to train in order to dunk (in most cases). Obviously a vertical is something that is mostly inherited. You can increase a vertical if you train.

So you can't dunk because you don't have natural hops and haven't trained enough. Training will increase your vertical, but there is no guarantee you will dunk.

If your GOAL is to dunk, than you should measure you vertical first. Since you probably don't have a vertical pole...you can just do it the old fashioned way. Fully extend your arm and measure where the tip of your middle finger is. Now jump as high as you can and mark it (tape, dirt, whatever). Measure the distance between that mark you just made and the first measurement and you have your vertical.

A basketball hoop is 10 feet. That's 120 inches. Take your height (in inches) and add your vertical. Now the difference between that number you just calculated and the 120 inch basketball hoop is how many ADDITIONAL inches you need to train your body to jump.

At this point you have a number that either A) Gives you hope/potential or B) Tells you to keep your day job. If you don't know which spot you fit in, allow me to tell you. If the number is over 12," that's known as a reach, literally. Think of it like this, the more vertical you need to gain, the less natural vertical you have. Sorry whitey ;). If it's under a foot, then there is hope for you. NOTE: This is just a rough estimate IMO. I'm sure it is possible to add over a foot to your vertical, for those fews untapped people who have jumping potential and for some reason never used it. Also those same people do have the potential to develop devestating knee/leg/ankle injuries from their newly found verticals because their bodies can't sustain them (and I hope they do because they proved me wrong)!

So to answer your question, this is how you add vertical:
#1) Jump squats. One word: explosiveness.
#2) Squats.
#3) Calf raises (seating and standing).
#4) Leg press (generic, but helpful for stregth and overall shape. Use varying motions/simulate jumping to a degree. never lockout your knees because especially since you are doing HEAVY leg training and you need them to be safe).
Additionally helpful: Hamstring and thigh excersises. Anytime you strengthen any leg muscles...that is good.

These are just BASIC PRELIMINARY EXCERSISES you can do. Then there is....dun dun dun...p-l-y-o-m-e-t-r-i-c-k-s. You can't spell plyometricks without me. Before starting a plyo routine YOU MUST BE IN GREAT SHAPE, leg-wise. If you aren't, you risk injury during your routine and later on in life and gameplay. Do you want that? Thought so. Only you know what "good enough" shape is, so start a plyo routine at your own discretion. If you truly have the interest in raising your vertical than you will have no prob finding one.
