In Diesel's guide to Bulking Up, he says "no machines" for most muscle groups. I'm assuming he's talking about those large machines you see in gyms vs. free weights.

My question is why not machines? What is the difference between machines and free weights?

Thanks!

Do squats on a smith machine, then do real ones. Do a bench press machine, then do dumbell bench.

Free weights work the stabilizer muscles and require much more raw power and control. Machines work one muscle, freeweights use many. It increases hormone output due to more complex work. It widens your frame because of more stress to your skeletal system. It's just gooder.
