why are upright rows so bad?

I never felt any discomfort with them, but they seem to be a taboo exercise. Anyone know the science behind why they are so bad?

Who told you upright rows were bad? They're like one of the main exercises, along with squats, deads and bench.

But if you've got a VERY BAD back, then maybe it puts stress on them. Otherwise, rows are really excellent for upper body strength.

Soapz, I think that you are speaking of bent-over rows.

I've always heard that upright rows are bad for you as well. I think I heard it was bad on your shoulders. Something about the shoulder rotation. If I were you I would just stick with military press and side laterals.

progressive rotator cuff damage. also a risk with behind the neck versions of lat pulldowns and seated shoulder press. google it.

Depends on what they're lifting for. Even done in that jerky fashion, done correctly, they're called hang pulls, and develop explosive strength with your legs, lower back, and shoulders. However, they're usually done by Olympic lifters, and not of much use to people who just wanna get "buff."

Nah, upright rows are fine. However, you need to add some rotator cuff work in if you're gonna do them.

Over time they can damage your rotator cuffs. Some people with lucky genetics may never experience this, but I know a few people off the top of my head who don't do them anymore because of shoulder pain. There are plenty of other shoulder exercises to do that aren't damaging like that.

I did upright rows to develop my traps over the course of 6 or 7 months and it worked, I got results. I haven't done upright rows for 2 years since then, I work on my delts now.

I've never heard of this. I've seen people more knowledgeable than me advocate dropping

- upright rows,
- behind the neck shoulder press, and
- behind the neck lat pulldowns

but I've not seen evidence that bb bench can damage the rotator cuffs, only that your rotator cuffs may hold back benchpressing (I suspect this may be happening to people who need to spend less time on the bench anyhow). I'd be happy to be corrected on any of the above.

Hey, I settled on the upright rows a month ago.

But I just noticed you guys are saying it's dangerous . . .

I already had to quit lateral raises, since I can feel my shoulder joints give a mildly painful little 'pop' each time I do it. And as for the front raises,

the pain was UNREAL when I tried it.

Problem is, the trapezius is made pretty sore by deadlifts (don't want to quit those), so military-style presses might be overtraining.

I feel like the one-hand-at-a-time dumbell version is a "safe" version, but could I be wrong?

I usually keep my elbows about 45-50 degrees from my sides to protect my rotator cuff. Even though it involves my triceps more I still work my pecs and avoid any injuries.

Anything can be bad for you if it's not done right. With weight lifting consistency is in your happiness,if you aren't happy with a workout CHANGE IT!DUH! There are always other ways of doing a exercise,find it & use it if you think upright rows will hurt you.

Yep rotator cuff is damaged a bit.
