Instinctively, I know he's right but why are tattoos a red flag? In other words, what's the underlying issue or problem?

Apologies in advance if this is a naïve question.

The conventional wisdom is that tattoos and piercings signify that she is more open, adventurous, rebellious, or free spirited. I'm sure there are other adjectives too. It's not necessarily a red flag. But it signals that she is more likely to be casual about sex on some subconscious level. That's the idea as I've understood it.

Obviously there are exceptions to the rule and the dosage makes the poison.

On women, tattoos can be signs of self-destructive tendencies like defiling their body/skin with creepy, non-feminin symbolism.

Furthermore this leeds one to asume certain character traits which are not desirable in LTR women.

*disobedient
*non-compliant
*chaotic
*non-traditional
*etcetc

You just need to observe tattooed women around you.

Also, you have to look at the cultural background of women.

You will not find as much tattoos anywhere else then on western women, which clearly is another indicator of a society going down the drains.

South- and East-European women are not doing that ****, neither Asians ..... i dont know about Latinas but from what i have seen they dont overdo it as well.

I twill be hard to find a woman in the west below the age of 40 which hasnt ink on her skin and there are definately women with a couple of subtile tattoos out there which are still LTR material.....

BUT, its a red flag and you need to watch it!

Yeah, it's more how many tats and where they reside on her body @Westminster .

But also; most people do the tats because they want to look cool and be popular, be in fashion, but whom right?
The answer is simple to everyone else. E.g. they are worrying/thinking of other peoples opinion to whom they are which = personal insecurity. So tats are a quite good sing of personal insecurity where the person is looking for other people's approval.

Now this even gets more of stronger signal when we talking about girls. Girls seek approval and advise from their social circle of chicks and there is nothing more important for chicks to be in the inside of their click / circle. They do anything to be approved by other women. Think of back then in the school yard and how mean girls can be to each other and how girls outside the click suffered from not being "inside" the popular girl's social circles. Not so with us guys that have a more IDGAF attitude towards our bros which is why tats is less a signal of insecurity I suppose for us guys. Women of the other hand have their on type of advisory chick boards where they go to for all kinds of advise and approval; from their newest boyfriend, to the job they applies for, for the purchase of a dress or whatever. They both on these "boards" seek and give approval to their friends. Hence tats included as they are by nature and as social creatures insecure by nature.

So yeah, tats can indeed be strong red flag too. But as I kind of started with mentioning it comes down to "it depends".

Yeah, that’s a green flag to me.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

I am fairly certain (I once read) that there was a study done, which unsurprisingly, indicated that there was a positive correlation between higher number sex partners women had had if they have tattoos versus women with no tattoos who had had far fewer sex partners.

So they are high achievers.

I always thought reading into the psychology of tattoos is a time waster. There are plenty of ways to pick up on how promiscuous a woman may be; she'll subcomm it one way or another. Tats can be part of that but I wouldn't automatically reject a girl for having them unless I found her unattractive. And if I make a move and she denies it's not like I can say "but you have tats..."

As for red flags, the others the OP listed are more indicative.

It depends on what you're looking for.

For short term, tattoos are fine, usually a good sign.

But tattoos do indicate she made a decision (design, location, etc.) without much concern of how it might impact her future.

Whether that's good or bad is up to the individual.

If you want to talk, talk to your friends. If you want a girl to like you, listen to her, ask questions, and act like you are on the edge of your seat.

To me it shows they are too impulsive, don’t think about how the decision they make today will effect them years down the road, also shows financial irresponsibility because tattoos are expensive and most women I know that have them are always complaining about being broke.

I have known many women that have 1-2 and I wouldn't say it signified anything. However, women who have many tattoos (4+), have "sleeves," or any type of facial tattoo generally are flashing you with red lights that they are crazy. Granted they many times are very adventurous in bed so they tend to be a lot of fun in that regard. But even as plate material they can generate a lot of unneeded drama like any crazy girl will.

Interesting side: these women are either very turned on by the fact I have no tattoos or they are completely turned off by the fact I don't.

Advice from the old lady:

I agree with @AureliusMaximus about "it depends". And I have an interesting perspective in that I myself do not have ink, my fiance (a guy who looks like a rock star and has been in the music industry) has no tatoos either, and I have clearly informed my kids that there will be no tattoos (or kooky hair color) while residing under my roof....

But my 18 year old daughter, who is in a LTR for almost 2 years with a musician she went to high school with, is very creative and artsy and plans to become a tatoo artist specializing in botanicals. He's also very creative and artsy. And she was a virgin long into her LTR (she might still be, I'm not naive but I don't know), and they might end up as life partners/marrieds. She does not have any tatoos yet, but has shown me the one she plans to get (she has drawn it herself) and it is an old fashioned looking botanical type illustration she plans to put along the outside of her lower leg once she moves out this summer.

So I'd say she does not meet the standard "red flag" list you guys are talking about. And it makes sense for her to have some ink because being a tatoo artist with no ink would be rather weird. Her rationale is actually pretty smart. Tatoo artists can make great money as an artist, and her desire is "to help people express their creativity through body art".

She's extremely responsible and respectful and has a much more thought out game plan for her life than lots of people her age.

And I know a basist who plays in several bands who has a cool live in gf, she has lots of ink and pink/purple hair, but so does he. So they match as an artsy couple. They are utterly smitten with each other and just bought a house together. Ya. It depends.

Never try to read a woman's mind. It is a scary place. Ignore her confusing signals and mixed messages. Assume she is interested in you and act accordingly.

Tattoos, and especially piercings, are a form of body mutilation.

There is a lot of overlap between women having tattoos and those same women being chaotic.

Tattoos don't turn me off, but they're def a red flag to start looking for symptoms of dark triad traits.

Tattoos are also cultural, for some groups. I used to feel very differently about ink, in up to my 30’s but changed my mind about it after associating with some very stand up folks who had them.

It’s a form of expression, and one size does not fit all.

I agree that there are tasteful and very alluring applications on women, it’s situational and does not connote anything specific in my mind. I do not care for sleeves in general and over inked individuals do tend to fit a certain profile, men and women, but there are always exceptions.

I really don’t care for the traditional tramp stamp, but that’s not seen often anymore in women under 45. Anythjng that cannot be hidden in a short sleeve and long pants are also not particularly appreciated.

As with most things moderation is key.

There are tons of inveterate sloots with no ink at all. Again it’s situational.

From personal experience, women with tattoos come with all sorts of other issues: psychological problems, dishonesty, narcissism, drug use. I'm not sure if there is a clear cut scientific explanation for this, but the correlation is undeniable.

It's kind of like when you see a beige Toyota sedan, you automatically know that it's driven by someone who hogs the left lane while doing 10-15 mph below the limit. There is probably some psychological reason why that type of driver gravitates towards that particular car, but it's probably so obscure as to be nearly impossible to figure but. And yet, you know that the stereotype is true 99% of the time.

It's safety and blandness, everyone knows that. These beige Toyota sedan drivers were the same people designing communist architecture back in the day.
