In walks a drunk @ss dude, high on meth or some ****ing drug and starts roughing up my cousins teenages. Right off the street.... which happens sometimes in NOLA. He moved past them and started heading up the stairs where my kids and HB9's child was.

When you say he was "roughing up" your cousin's teenagers, what do you mean? Like was he was physically attacking them? Because you go on to say he walked past them, as if nothing really happened.

If he actually attacking them then I understand why you did what you did. Otherwise it sounds like you just kicked his ass unnecessarily to show off.

The way I read the story, this was a STRANGER who entered the house hopped up on drugs. Maybe I'm wrong about that, and if so maybe the OP can clear it up. But I know of several similar stories in the last few years in my experience. Some psychotic, drugged up (or both) screwball entering someone's house, standing on someone's porch, going door to door, or following people down the street. Hasn't happened to me, fortunately, but it has happened to friends of mine.
