+1.

It is more about personal growth than having financial/social difficulty in moving out. If you are seriously lonely or whatever, you have emotional problems that arise from more than just your forced independence.

You cannot tell me that people who live with their parents are as mature and equipped to handle problems as those who have sucked it up and moved out.

Paying your own bills and making your own food sucks ass? What are you, 10 years old?

Personally I have no problem with carefully chosen roommates and I think there's a lot to learn from living in that situation, too.

I can't think of anything more powerful than the feeling you get from being in complete control of your livelihood. Not just buying your own stuff but coming home to your own home or apartment looking around and saying to yourself "Yeah, this is my place..." Oh yeah, and answering the phone and it's a HB asking if she could come over and watch movies. Oh yeah, it sucks being on your own...

After I graduated college I moved back in with my mom for 3 months. And it was miserable. I LIKE living on my own, cooking my own food. Living on your own sucks until you get the hang of it (IE, learn how to pay your bills on time and cook and clean up after yourself, and wash your clothes and basically be an adult). But once you get the hang of taking care of yourself, it's pretty awesome.

I just stumbled in to my apt drunk at 4 am on christmas and there's no one to get mad at me for it. I put in my 40 hours at work, and I can do whatever I want to outside of that.

That, and, there's no way a guy over the age of 18 can bring a girl home to his mom's house and game her and not look like a lame ass.

I had my own 1 bedroom apartment since march and i could not be happier. The key is knowing what you can afford and what you cant. If you have big payments on your car and are getting less than 25K a year, you'll run into some financial troubles.

You also have to choose what you really need in terms of services and entertainment. I dont even have cable tv i just have high speed internet and a moviepass from blockbuster for unlimited rentals, since i only watch movies and news on tv it seemed like a better use of my money.

So if you have a steady job that will give you good hours, find a decent apartment in a decent part of town, get a so-so car with no payments(2-4k), make sure you have good cell phone plan with enough minutes(dont get landline , its a waste of money), dont sign up for things like cable/satelite tv right away wait until you see how much money you actually spend every month.

Probably most important thing is learning how to not eat out most of the time. it tastes good and its convinient, but it takes a huge chunk of your income. even if you spend 10 bucks a day on some fast food or chinese , that comes out to 300 dollars a month. Instead go to the grocery store, buy every thing you need and try to cook yourself. its a lot cheaper and also healthier.

I really want to get my own place. I talked to my Mom and she is against me moving out of my grandmas place. I'm going to a university in August and she said I should just stick it out here until then. At about July she has agreed to paying rent as long as I do good in school but she has suggested that I go to the dorm. Living in the dorms at 27

I realize that I am an adult. I have to make the choice of living for the present or living for the future. I can get a 40 hour a week job and drop out of college or maybe take one or two classes and get my BA in about 6 years...

I really don't know what to do. I have about $6k in debt, a car that has $8k left on it and I'm working part-time making about $10.25 an hour. I'm working full time in between semesters but thats only one month. If I worked 25 hours a week I'd take in about $1025 a month, before takes. My Mom is giving me about $400 a month to live off of. My monthly expenses right now are about $377, it will go down by $100 when my credit cards are paid off. $1025+400-377 = 1048 left for rent and food. Say rent is $800 that leaves me $248 a month for what ever is not covered.

Is there anything I can do to get my own place and survive until July? The most important thing is that I do good in school and secure my future. So I can't work too many hours or my grades start to slip.

please tell me you didn't do drugs..hehe just kidding bro. I'm thinking you were a spoiled brat? Everything was given to you and your parents love you so much? I don't want to generalize here but are you asian?..hehe okay nvm.

My parents grew up from nothing so their life growing up was bad. They didn't want us to experience that, so they thought it was best for them to give us everything we want and need without having to work for it.

I worked 3 months in burger king when I was 16 yrs old, quit and went back to work at age 20 where I work full time as a caregiver and get paid less then you do. I just started last month. :D

I'm not settling for this kind of job or salary. I'd box my way out if I have to. I'm starting to become a very responsible man and I'm starting to take control of my life so I don't need to pride my self and move out as I realized. I'll give myself 3 to 5 years to save up for a condo and move up with a job that will let me live my life to the fullest. I'm currently going to school. I have so many plans. By the time I'm 40 I won't need to work, money will just start flowing in my pocket every which way.

Get motivated. You work part-time. You need to work more than that because you need money like you said. I'm sure you have a lot of time but you're not spending it where you really need to. Imagine the life you want and make it happen. As for me, my parents were trying to give me that life I want and I'm not too happy.

You can give me a million dollars but the feeling isn't the same when you know you earned it. The ups and downs on how you got there!~

Some good advice above.

I'll add pay attention to net, as opposed to gross. For example, an apartment that covers heat could be a better deal than one that has a much higher rent if you have to pay heat if you're in a cold climate.
