If the roles were reversed and it was a man, nobody would shed a tear. But from a medical perspective, it’s entirely possible, at the moment of her death and for years beforehand, she was oblivious to the dangers of her behaviors. She was a long-time alcoholic and alcohol, along with hard drugs, destroys the prefrontal cortex of the brain (where you make decisions) and erodes synaptic plasticity. It’s easy for people to say, as I have heard, “She shouldn’t have done crack!” (who could disagree?), but at this time it appears she didn’t die from any illicit drug. She may have died from mixing prescription medication (no word yet if the prescriptions were valid) with alcohol and her brain was unable to judge the newly posed dangers. So in one sense you are right, twenty five years ago she knew the dangers of alcohol, but in time she became incapable of seeing reality for what it is.
