I am a sales rep for a large electronics recycling company @ the age of 27. I have been there for 3 years. My first year, I killed it making 80k+. I did just under 3/4 of a million in sales not including the value of material on the back end.

Since then the e-waste market and "being green" has exploded in popularity and has become saturated with a million other recycler who have all of the same certifications and qualifications we do. However, they have a completely better offer as far as rebates and asset remarketing and revenue sharing goes for the value of the precious metals we refine on the commodities market. My boss refuses to change our outdated business model, is cheap as fvck, and wants us to be deceptive. He also has a million in cars in his driveway. My pockets have taken a big hit since then.

I can build all the rapport I want with he customer but when it comes down to price and our offer - we are blown out of the water to the point of insulting the client. My bosses response in layman's terms is "they are not the right deals" and wants me to find suckers. I know damn well what the markets and other companies offers are like and know he is full of sh*t. He only wants ridiculously huge profit margins and anything else he could give a sh*t about.

I would quit however I am emotionally involved with his family and the people here. He rents me Lamborghinis, gives me sox tickets, and dough to blow at the casino but I feel that all that is a ploy and a manipulative way to keep me around for his own agendas. I could continue to work harder and harder as a slave to find these "right deals" however I think that my talents would be useful elsewhere where we had a better offer to our clients.


BTW: No base salary, all commission, I have to pay my own employment taxes, no 401k, no benefits, nada. It doesn't cost him anything to keep me around except for a phone bill.

However the sky is the limit if you find these "right deals" but they are few and far between now that our pricing and offer is garbage. Guy I interned for was making 600k before market saturation, started losing customers, and then peaced.

At what point do you throw in the towel and chuck the deuces? It is always a guilt trip in the back of a salesman's mind that you could be working harder...

Anything and everything you do while at work must first make you money, or make it easier for you to make money later.

Stop talking about friends at work, that doesn't exist.

I know that making money with someone like that does endear you to them. It makes you loyal. Don't forget this is business man. You are #1, not him.

Wanna see if he's your friend? ask him to pay you a little hourly because things are slowing down. See if your Lambo owning friend can part with a couple thousand a year more for you. With all his bread it shouldn't make a difference to his bottom line. Ask for $10 an hour lol,

Good sales people make money anywhere they work, real estate is a goldmine for people like you. It's just a job, if you find another one that makes you more money leave. You're just young and hung up on your early success. You can do it again.

I've never been one to stay around unless I have a good working environment to work in. Heck, the pay as long as it gets me what I need, I'm pretty content. I find though before moving, always be one to have a good relationship with your employer so that nothing comes back to bite you. In many types of work, people know people and word can get around. I know you're involved with your boss but make the reason for quitting some thing else outrageous without blaming it on the company i.e. spreading your wings etc.

If it were me, I would leave. But I am biased because I refuse to work a straight commission job. If I'm working 100% commission, then I'm dam sure not gonna have a boss taking a cut out of my pay. I''ll be an independent contractor or a business owner before I let someone else take money from me.

Tell him you're resigning, effective immediately. If you have money in the bank, you'll be OK for awhile. Changing jobs excites me. I like the unpredictability. I LIKE not knowing where I'll be in 1 year.

And, yes, as others have already said, fvuck the emotional connection to your boss. He's making money off of you. Once you stop doing that for him, I'll bet he'll stop paying you with perks. Fvuck loyalty to your boss. Pay yourself in perks. Make a ton and don't depend on ANYBODY to give you shiat. Only thing you want is MORE MONEY. Tell him you're resigning because you're not making enough. He'll probably give you more.

Wow a lot for the young age of 27, is that a job that requires a college degree?
