When the economy and market crash, what are your plans?

I read that after the Yugoslav war, where we bombed everything and didn't rebuild it, roughly half of the people were existing off of sustenance agriculture. That was pioneer life a hundred years ago - forty acres and a mule, some chickens, and maybe a cow or a couple pigs if you were really doing well. Combine that with your full-time labor, and you'd probably get by. Without an economy, that is the life that most of us would be reduced to.

Problem is that in the U.S., the vast majority have zero access to any dirt or seeds or anything to plant and grow anything, let alone protect it from the roving bands of near starving to death folks that will do ANYTHING to get some food.

If the economy suddenly ground to a HALT, most folks in the U.S. would either be dead or totally dependent on government handouts (FEMA camps) to survive.

Not sure how long THAT food would last.

But back to reality, the economy is NOT going to crash like that, anytime soon, it will most likely just slowly disintegrate over time. Some areas will be harder hit than others. Inner cities will see it the worst.

You'll likely see a lot more social unrest, as cops and firefighters start to realize their pensions ain't worth squat, and people at the bottom realize they can organize some twitter riots and rob 7-11's without repercussions.

As far as my own personal plans, I plan on laying low, saving up some cash, and staying out of potential danger zones.

But like I said, there won't likely be any one singular "event" that suddenly crashes everything. Just a slow, steady decay over lawlessness.

The best defense is to always be mobile, and always have some reserves (cash or silver) to fall back on if need be.

And always keep a low profile. If anybody finds out you've got any reserves, you may as well have a flashing target on your back.

On the other hand, there could be some HUGE opportunities in the next couple years, as asset prices might correct significantly, making some things REALLY cheap. Lots of folks in the know say now CASH is the place to be.

Small towns, avoid the big cities since you need space to grow your food and you want to avoid the herd of people raiding around.

Plus a decent amount of firepower is going to be necessary to defend whatever you have, best thing would be to stick with like minded people and create an enclave.

If you remain in big cities you have to completely rely on somedoby else, plus I would avoid any place run from a distopic government or ethnic gangs.

i take it its going to be like georgia in the 90s.
i was in georgia during the mid 90s and i gotta say thats as "collapsed" as you get. wanna know? read on :

we had 4 locks on our main door, like looney toons , we also had 2 THICK bars which got locked aswell. the windows? we had made vertical as well as horizontal bars to fend off thugs.

2. we had a shotgun on the living room wall , a 6 shooter on the piano and my dad carried a small revolver everywhere we went.

3.no electricity or gas, had our own generator in the KITCHEN so we could protect it better.....lots of people tried to steal that one >___>

4.my dad put this car out on the street for 1 day and it got stolen.

5.wh0res for food...yes prostitutes for food.

6.one day ,one sunny day, some random gangster got the american vice-ambassador ,took him to the main square in tebilisi and SHOT HIM in broad daylight.

most modern people are too lazy to live in the tundra so they will stay away.

There isn't any crash coming... the Chinese are going to bail you guys out hardcore. They are already doing it, you are just ignoring it or you don't know about what's happening. The uber rich Chinese are walking into America and buying up property left, right and center. Infact quite a few of my ex-students brag about the houses they've bought up in California.

Likely, America will just be up for sale to whomever has money, right now its the Chinese, in 30 to 50 years, Vietnam and India will probably have a chunk of that money. There are 1.5 billion people in China and about half of them have better employment than people in the USA, scary thought right. Well the top 10% are buying up all your properties and sending their children to your universities. We are talking 150 MILLION people with money to buy real estate and fuel the economy. If you're smart you'll start learning mandarin now and figure out a service or product you can sell to them. They ARE coming.

its just the world self-correcting and maybe one day the Chinese will have a website with a guy posting to 'not date Chinese Women'. Guys will be talking about how the poor women of America just want to marry and fvck a Chinese man for his money etc etc. Haha, no really this will happen. If anything you'll be looking at Looper's America or Elysium where the pollution in China is preferable over the quality of life in America. The world is changing and those who don't change with it will be left behind in the dust. You can cry, scream and stockpile guns but none of that will save you. The ability to make money and provide a valuable service to others is the only thing that will keep you from ending up in the gutter. There aren't going to be roving bands of humans, infact I think people are going to be confined to their houses and martial law will keep them there. Robotic drones are already flying over head, wait till they have tank tread drones rolling out on the street ala Terminator 3. All this stockpiling is just non-sense, it will last you maybe 6 months tops, what happens when the authorities get wind of you hoarding food or ammo, they will step in and TAKE IT BY FORCE. You might be able to kill a man with a shot gun, but a drone flying at 50,000 feet, can bullseye you within 30 seconds. You think you can live underground? Just roll a couple canisters of tear gas into your air vents and problem solved. Found some other way to live off the grid? Not without access to women and a woman is a social creature, she isn't going to want to spend the rest of her life in a cage. The best way to prep for the coming disaster? Become a doctor, farmer or highly skilled trades man and figure out how to service the rich better. Become nearly indispensible to others, study something that others absolutely need in order to survive. Pollution will be a big problem soon and people will pay big bucks to anyone who can clean it up. There are billionaires who own apartments in Beijing and would pay millions to have that air pollution cleaned up.

Lol this sounds utterly ridiculous but I actually kind of agree with it. People like to whine about blacks, hispanics, and muslims when it's two billion asians that are going to be taking over. There's no way in hell the west will ever be able to compete once China and India gets their sh!t together.

Regardless whether the shtf any time soon or not, I think a great strategy is to buy some remote land with a stream or water source flowing through it combined with great growing dirt. A cave on said property is your choice...

If nothing real happens then you will have a great place to unwind on an occasional vacation away from the real world.

A good strategy in life is to not focus on one thing or purpose, but to plan flexibly.

They've been printing literally ten times the amount the FED has, and any economic data that comes out of China is taken with a HUGE grain of salt by pretty much everybody.

Those dudes even put obviously photoshopped pics in their state run newspapers.

As far as India, the illegal gold trade now officially surpasses that of all illegal drugs, as the government is going apeshyte trying to control the fleeing currency.

There IS a crash coming, but it's going to be an ultra slow motion train wreck that will affect ALL economies.

There won't be a crash any time soon. You have to be flying high or speeding fast in order to "crash". :crackup:

Right now we are barely in 2nd gear. We are just getting off the runway. Its going to be a while before another major crash. There will be a few drops and hiccups but the next MAJOR crash is probably 10-15 years away. Maybe even 20-25.

If you learned anything from 2008.. you'll easily see the next one coming. They always happen right after a major BUBBLE --> A strong imbalance in the system. They also happen during "good times" when a crash is the last thing people are worried about.

The fear and paranoia we still have today is evidence there will not be a crash anytime soon. People are still being way too cautious for it.

What am I going to do?

I'll continue to do what I'm already doing: buying real estate. STR8UP's thread on becoming wealthy really got me into the whole thing.

As far as the economy crashing, the whole "SHTF" concept is very shrewd marketing from the companies that sell survival stuff. As PlayHer Man said, people are still to cautious for this to happen anytime soon. We'll see dozens of more bailouts and restructuring before anything like that happens.

I get a laugh out of "non-hybrid survival seeds." A synonym for 'non-hybrid' is Open Pollinated; it means that you can save the seed and plant it. Those varieties are older, which means they are cheap, as long as you buy them from a seed company. But if they are labeled "survival," then they are about 10 times the price.

The prepper people who are buying a tin can of seeds and thinking that will keep them fed are fooling themselves, anyway. People really underestimate the difficulty of food production.
