Im just really curious where the side of the law is. My pops was nearly mugged a few nights ago by some guy with a pipe or what not. I mean you have heard storys where robbers sue homeowners for defending there property and winning. So thats why im so curious on when is it okay to defend yourself? How far can you take it? And if you defend yourself can the person sue you for doing that? Well it seems like to the law your screwed both ways.

What I would do...

If there is a robber in your house, then KILL THE MOTHER F*CKER!! Dont LET him be ABLE to sue you.

And as for mugging, if the guy has a weapon and you get it away from him, if he runs away, then so be it, if he still tried to hit u etc, then stab the mother f*cker in the eye! Self defence. You can always say that he was trying to take the knife away from u and stab u with it (which is what he was going to do to start off with).

My 2c...

I believe the official stance is either one of these two, I can't remember exactly.

You are allowed to use the same level of necessary violence intended against you to defend yourself. Ie- In a barfight you're not allowed to shoot someone. But if a guy has a knife, you can turn the knife on him. But if he is subdued and you still kill him, then that's bad.

You are allowed to use one step above. So if a guy is just in a fistfight with you, you can cause him pretty serious injury legally. A guy has a knife, you can shoot him. Etc.

Shout for Paradox... He will come flying over the mountains to your rescue and will put the robber in jail;)

Ok, on a more serious note...

Robber in house:

If he has a weapon that will be able to kill you (or anyone in the house etc), then kill the b@stard, its in your house, you can tell the judge any story and there is nothing anyone can say or do to prove that what u are saying isn’t true.

If you get mugged:
Again, if he has a weapon, then if you wanna take your chances and try beat the sh!t out of him, then fine, do so, but then don’t kill him, just take the weapon away from him and smack him around abit (break his arms, break his nose, knock some teeth out... make sure he will think twice before trying to mug someone again:D) while the cops get there. then they will take him to jail.:woo:

Woah

Sweet to know the answer that you can mess the guy up. I just wanted to know cuz the law seems like it screws over the innocent all the time.

Different states have different laws.

Tony Martin in the UK actually went to jail for shooting a couple of burglers, in his own home.

The US laws vary state-to-state.

Generally, you can only use deadly force if a reasonable person percieves their life to be in danger.

You can't use deadly force for example, if someone is stealing your car out of your driveway.

Again, check the laws of your locality.

Also, it is a good idea not to use reloads or "hot" ammunition, as a dead criminals family might sue you for using bullets that were designed to kill.

Yes, it sounds stupid, but not far-fetched.

Always use what your local PD uses is a safe bet.

Or what the Feds use.

Hydra-Shoks are always good, as are Cor-Bons.

Then again, a 12 gauge semi-auto is ideal for home defense.

Here is a good place to start:

The Home Office (I think) sent pamphlets last year to every house in the UK detailing what is legal to do in case of home invasion, but I can't remember what was legal. I don't think you can kill someone unless they're bringing lethal force at you. Some OAPs pushed a burglar out the window and he died - I don't think they went to court or anything, but it brought about the review.

My buddy was being beat up by 2 guys on coke. He ended up stabbing one of them in the lung and leg and had to go to a boys home for a long time. Just be careful of how far you go, because there can be consequences.

Defending yourself- the law is f*cked because society is f*cked. If the law is unfair to you after defending yourself, hell at least you're still alive and still have all your bodily functions.

I broke my hand dealing with an aggressor, smashed it on his face, almost two months ago, and just got the cast off now. But if I hadn't punched maybe my face would be broken or my jaw would be wired shut. Thank God there wasn't any legal trouble.
Some ghetto loser- someone that reason would have never worked with, only force.

I have guns at home but if you carry one on you for self defense, you're risking a lot of trouble. You can carry blades as long as they;re under like 8 inches. I carry one with really heavy brass at the end, if I'm in a situation where confrontation might be a problem. Next time I get attacked, that brass gets smashed into their jaw, nose, eye, then the blade comes out if they still want to fight. Kids these days, they're more likely to jump out of cars in groups of 5 with bats then fight you one on one like a real man.

BTW, NEVER start fights, just finish them.

If you jump out of a window and get killed, it's your fault for jumping out of the window.

Likewise, if you attack someone and end up getting maimed or killed as a result, it's your fault for attacking them in the first place.

This is my view, but the law in the UK would side with the attacker. No wonder crimes against innocent people are on the increase!

There are so many different laws pertaining to this in different locations that it's impossible to tell someone what they can do unless you know the specific laws of their location.

That being said, in general, governments are taking away people's ability to defend themselves. In some places it's illegal to carry mace! What's left? I dunno, a whistle I guess?

I usually carry an ASP 16" baton with me at all times. It's easy to conceal and quick to deploy if needed.

Here in Canada though, it's illegal to carry one on yourself if it's concealed. IE: It's illegal for me to carry it in my pocket when it's collapsed, but it would be legal for me to carry it around extended as long as it's not concealed.

Don't ask me why...

I know in the states, you can legally carry one in some states if you've taken the ASP baton course or some bullshyt like that(basically teaches you not to hit someone on the head or neck, but rather the quads).

Anyways, here's a saying I go by that applies no matter where you live: "Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6".

Hey Pantera_man, where do you live? 8 inches and below is huge. I live in cali the law here requires 4.5 inches or smaller and no butterfly knives.
