Way too many generalisations here. It has nothing to do with fitting in. I have a genuine love for certain sports and still participate in three. Those who I know that can no longer play still watch. Almost religiously. I plan my life around major games.

Most people who are into sports actually played them. Either at schools or at clubs. Once you learn to play a game you learn to appreciate the nuances of the game. The little in between moments, not the big moments that a person who does not understand the game would think are the best parts.

Ill use rugby as an example. As great as it is to see a try scored, its the sidestep that put the man into space. Its the big tackle that caused the line break. Its the 20 year old kid in his first game cutting a backline to pieces.

If you never played the game you dont understand the finer points and if you dont understand the finer points you will never appreciate any sport. Once you learn to understand the games, and especially if you have played them, there are few things in the world better then sports.

Im one of those guys that screams at the TV when the game is on. It has reached the point where really big games I avoid large crowds. I watch em on my own.

I feel sorry for you bud.
Not only that you don't keep up with sports... actually that's not it. :)

If you don't watch the NBA at all You Missed One Of The Most Greatest Years In Sports History!!

THE JORDAN ERA..!!!!!!

The Chicago Bulls Championship Streak Three-peat From 1991-1993.

The Chicago Bulls Championship Streak 2nd Three-peat From 1996-1998.

I still get myself fired up and screaming, jumping up and down just by remembering what happened in the NBA finals in 92 and 93, the most amazing performances by Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, John Paxon and the Rest of the Cast.

I watch basketball because I played it since I was young and my dad played professionally in my country so it is normal to me. My dad even yells at the game sometimes. :p

If someone is watching sports to fit in but does not like it then just don't do it. Its like dressing a certain way because your friends dress like it, even if its against your morals.

Do what you have passion for and what you believe in. Not do what a group of friends, the media, politicians, news and TV tells you to do.

The Only place your going find real truth is from God Through The Bible, The people you trust, and yourself.
And sometimes You can't even trust yourself or the people around you and that's where Prayer to God is the only way, and having The Lord Jesus Christ in your heart.

I mean, I will see a bunch of average flabby looking dudes that look like they have not picked up a ball in 5+ years talking like they are respected sports analysts. Most of them could not run for 3 minutes without heaving for air, but can spout out statistics, standings, draft picks, favored teams/players, underdogs, rankings, and the such in one breath.
In life, there are spectators and there are players.

I think most people do it to be socially up to date. They might have other activities they participate in. How would it feel to go out with a bunch of your guy friends who are current on these things and you feel left out for not knowing? Still, I'm more impressed with people who play and are savvy at the same time.

Do not be too easy. If you are too easy to get, she will not want you. If you are too easy to keep, she will lose interest in you. If you are too easy to control, she will not respect you.

For me, it started as a question of "fitting in."

Something like 75% of all conversations with men that I don't know all that well seemed to deal with sports. It's like the great equalizer in conversation. You know about them, you can talk with anyone. At heart I'm a nerd and I personally like talking about history, politics, philosophy, religion, etc. But when I was younger, NOBODY wanted to get into these subjects except older folks. So, in order to have friends or really just alleviate boredom you begin talking about what the crowd talks about. Helps build connections and relationships at work and school too btw, which are good for your future.

Since then, I've actually developed a healthy interest in football, basketball, and fighting sports on my own. So it's easier now. :)

I agree with this. Even though I still find it retarded, for the sake of being able to build relationships with future business colleagues, its better to have something in common with the masses.

the same reason why guys at the bar would rather go home and jack off thinking about the smoking hot peice of tail than they would to actually talk to her. Becuase it's easier, less stressful, and less demanding.

The american way is simply to do the least amount of work and to get the most possible out of it. Talking about sports all day long, still lets you live your dreams out, while at the same time, having no physical displine whatsoever.
This a really good post, and sums it all up. Can't believe I missed it earlier.

For me, sports have sucked in the 00's, I still live in the 80's.

-NBA, I havent been seriously interested in (save for the lakers/celtics last year, that was exciting). But I cant think of many NBA games, where I race home to watch whats on. Unlike the 90's.

-NFL. Havent been into this new era at all. Some of the past superbowls have been good. But I dont follow it religiously.

-NHL. Havent been into it since the Canadian teams moved down south. The NHL for me still includes the Quebec Nordiques, etc. Its a canadian sport, not southern.

It'd be like Nascar moving to the north.

-MLB. ????? P-lease. The worst of the 4, and the most tainted. Havent followed baseball since I was a kid, collecting baseball cards, 1992/93.

The college sports I've never followed. Would rather play ps3 or wii.
