The only person whom i can think of that i know of from many years, and whos legacy still lives on and is still thought of with respect is julius cesar. Yes one person out of hundreds of millions of people over the 1000's of years, and just one name. The fact that there are 6 billion people now only reduce your chances.

What about Plato, Augustus, Socrates, Cristopher Columbus, Jesus?

Bill Gates would die happy.

Life either gets better or worse. If you just continue your downward spiral then there really would be no point in you. Work hard and life will get easier, don't do jack and it'll get harder and you'll feel worse with each day as an opportunity to be happy flies over you.

As for a purpose after death, well who really cares? You'll be dead. However I like to think that future works I will make will cause happiness in people, for the good of the world and the human race, both of which i'm a very big fan of. Every single person counts. One person can influence millions of people for the better, and one person can start a war that kills millions, we need more of those better people.
first off, the garbage man could very well be happier than bill gates at death. hell he could be happier his entire life. although money can almost buy happiness, happiness is really all relevant. if youre used to limos and big houses and never having to do something yourself, well that sounds awesome to us but people who live it find it normal. the garbage man finds picking up trash normal, and is just as happy, although it sounds bad to us.

oh, and my life is fine. i guess its my middle child syndrome, but my entire life ive only wanted to make a massive impact on a massive amount of people. i always theorized that either i'll be a musician or if i fail, i'll kill someone famous (i theorized only half seriously about that). but really, i couldnt stand being normal. now im starting to think...what would be the point of impacting millions of people, being incredibly rich and being loved by women...when it gets you in the same dirt at the end of the day

Many people through out all over the world right now are searching for something, that peace.

Peoples have lived and passed onto the wayside never to be remembered, like they never existed. Decades and centuries ago.

Just watch the movie, Gangs of New York and you'll catch my drift.

Many people say live in the moment, enjoy yourself, there's no accountability and you can handle the future in stride.

What if you said to yourself, im not going to live for the moment, im going to invest in to the future, sow seeds and reap the many rewards that are set for me.

Compare these two people, 5 years from now, who's iife will be more meaningful with many rewards. The one who invests.

Now this is where people's lives hang in the balance.
Investing into the wrong thing could be very costly and even shortin your life. Weither it be in drinking, smoking, uncontrolled gambiling, immorality.

Even investing into friends or companies or your job maybe high risk.

Now lets say you invested into google at the very begining and you are now wealthy making millions of dollars and your now 50-60 years old.

you can be in luxury but you got only a few more years left. and now what.

People go throughout their entire life living for themselves, but they end up missing out on whats important and may decide in life or death, which is Relationships. Everybody has friends or family to pull them up, but as everything else in this world is, they maybe unreliable or they may be gone in death.

People Die everyday and they end up missing it in life, that everything, that love, that true relationship, the relationship with God Through The Lord Jesus Christ and he's eternal love.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN
Chapter 3 Verse 16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I don't want ya'll to be left out but this program talks about some people, atheists, Life and medical Death and may give you a new perspective like never before

Very true.

People that want fame want attention. I'll guess you're not getting your fair share right now.

I think you'll be pleased to find out that you'll eventually stop obsessing about the meaninglessness of life within a few years.

I personally think Heaven and Hell are concepts for people who give up on the search for higher truth (especially when there might not be any--terrifying). They're easy. We obviously made them up. If you choose to adopt a belief system, don't do so out of fear or convenience. The people that change the world for the better have both tremendous courage and a moral center.

I've found it's your habits that dictate your happiness and the impact you have on others. You are what you do on a regular basis.

So. Relax. This will pass. Take the time to figure out what really matters to you. In a few years, that will help you avoid careers that don't suit you.

That is the point. If it gets you dirt, then it's not what you want. Thats why meaning in your life has to come from you. Only you know what you want and what will make you happy. Fulfilling that is the purpose.

If you want to talk, talk to your friends. If you want a girl to like you, listen to her, ask questions, and act like you are on the edge of your seat.

Every person determines their own meaning to life, christians, atheists, jewish, muslims and so one, no ones gonna agree on a set meaning.

My next point is, How can you determine the meaning of life without fully living it, if your gonna die when you 84, can you truly try to find or know the meaning of life when you 40 let alone when your 19 or 20.

Maybe the best way to find the meaning of life is to talk to some old people or something, (not to brag, but I talk to alot of older people and its amazing what you can learn from them, different perspectives, different ways of thinking and such.

Another point, say GOD (bear with me here atheists) tells you the meaning of life, will it change the way you live? how you act? what you do? Will you go crazy? Will it matter?

And finally a comment on the first post, even though you didn't become a famous musician you still love music. I'm sure the music pulsates through you like a passion. Sports is my passion, even though I'm not pro(injuries and such) My goal was never to go pro but achieve the best that I could, becoming a very good amateur/semi-pro in soccer. I've taken this mindset
of being the best I can be to all aspects of my life, I don't need to be a mother Teresa or a Bill Gates or a Porn Star but I always make sure I try my best and to the fullest effort. Cause the worst feeling I think a person can have is right before you die and you regret not doing something or not doing it 100%.

This post reminds me of some volunteer/Charity Work I want to get done.

Wayne Dyer would say that our purpose in life is to give as much as we can; we cannot take anything with us when we die.

I take this to mean more than simple altruism; instead, I think that we should go after everything 100%. How can anyone who works hard at every endeavor ever be dissatisfied with life. How could such a person have any regrets?

Short version-- Give and Gain as much as you can from life.

Self-Mastery

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

my son says that the point to life is to imagine it as a race to god, and if someone falls down along the way, its everyones job to help that person back up and to keep going.

I think Aerosmith said it well,

"Life is a journey not a destination"

so basically the end doesn't matter it's how you get there that does....so don't worry about it

You are not alone in this search, I hope you realize that. Watching so many people analyze the same thing, while coming to their own conclusions is interesting. Life is purely subjective. Absolute truth does not exist (regardless of what you may think [things like math and science do not connote absolute truth in any way]), but is rather something based on perspective. People are NOT equal. Think of truth as a sculpture...everyone who looks at the sculpture gets a different perspective of "truth". So...inherent meaning does not exist, if that's what you're looking for.

If you're comparing the glory that Bill Gates has with the garbage man on the street...you're right that glory is temporary. If you look into Eastern philosophy, you'll find that everything is temporary anyway.

Death is nothing to fear...and death is where we're all headed (that's true)...but that is not the answer. You seem to be in a state known as "nihilism"...that nothing matters. But death does not have more value than life. Regardless of what your current thoughts are, you'll still have to end up living your life somehow.

If you want to learn about "creating meaning", you should look into existentialism. I would suggest that you start "knowing yourself"...that is, understanding yourself (the imperative of Ancient Greek culture). Self-reliance...that is one of the most important things that you can learn, to me. I would also suggest not doing anything stupid (like damaging your health, killing people, committing crimes, etc). Good luck in creating your life...this is only the beginning.

Hahaha... I have wondered this too and have come to the conclusion that trying to figure it out is a waste. You will drive yourself insane trying to figure out the reason of life.

My advice is to live your life to the fullest so that when you die you can honestly say "I had a great life and wouldnt have done it any other way"

figures a thread on the point of life is gonna drag out the christian soldiers looking for an easy kill

well since i made this thread i've gotten more out in the world (sickness kept me in) and gotten attention (what always drove me heh) i think im feeling a bit more normal. i do have this "i dont care either way" additude left in me...i think really its a defense mechanism from going in the hospital and avoiding shock and all from the bad news about my health. but i think as life goes on and i get back to doing normal things, i'll lose that.
