Ponder for a moment that you were a multimillion/billionaire what would you focus your philanthropy? I wouldn't be on "save the world," type sh*t. Mine would targeted mainly in my hometown (Richmond, CA or other parts of the Bay,) and in Far Rockaway, NY, maybe other parts of New York City and some other areas.
I would step to the West Contra Costa County Unified School District and the New York City Department of Ed with an offer to buy alma maters, every school I ever went to (from elementary to high school,) I would turn them into academy style private schools, complete with school uniforms, (blazers and ties included.) They would be tuition free, however the district boundaries would remain intact with a students living within the zones of my alma maters having first choice, but I leave open spots for those that were willing to travel.
The curriculum would stress math, science, computers. I would start district wide science fair and spelling bees with the goal of sending kids on to the national competitions. I would put the music programs back in the schools with the same intention in mind of eventually having nationally recognized programs. The hardest part would be to get the parents involved and working the unions. I would eventually like to phase the teacher's union out because I view the teacher's and principals unions as detrimental to educational system.
On the junior and high levels, I would put the home economics, metal and wood shops back in school with a business management component. I would have a free Kaplan or Princeton Review course, and have people from Cal and Standford come in to mentor and teach the kids on how to get in these schools, along with offering advice on getting scholarships and writing the essays for the scholarships and doing the school interview.
I've always found it f*cked up that even Richmond High is only ten miles from Cal, that I didn't know anybody that went there. The same with Far Rockaway High, despite Columbia and NYC being only a train ride, away, I didn't know anybody who went to those universities and I would be my personal mission provide these kids with the best education possible. I would also couple the academics with cool extracurricular activities, like a school newspaper, a debate team, a chess team, etc. and figuring out a way to make the sports teams competitive.
For those not interested in going to college, I would have a true vocational school, like Job Corp (without the ratchetness,) the vocational school would offer job training in carpentry, plumbing, welding, auto mechanics, stereo installation, culinary, networking, and other sh*t that can get a kid cool job after graduation. I would get with the unions so that upon graduation, the kids would have their union cards. Again, I would include a business management component, I would want my graduates to look to owning a business, not merely being a "worker bee."
I would sponsor the Little Leagues and pop warner football in these communities, supply the equipment, and maintain the fields. I'd also start a youth basketball program, that also had a summer league. Being that I despise the fact that Chinese are cheating in the Olympics and America had superior athletes, I would start programs in various Olympic sports, like diving, swimming, gymnastics. My Olympic training program would be the one I'd try to take nationwide. I'd also start a combat sport school either called the Gladiator School or The Fight Club it would teach kids combat sports, boxing, wrestling, MMA and various disciplines used in it. All of my programs would free of charge.

I'm not Haitian, but I think that every African and person of African descent should be trying to do something to help Haiti. The reason by is that out of the all of places that slaves were sent in the New World, it was the Haitians that successfully revolted against their slavemasters. I would also want to do something in Liberia since that country was founded by former America slaves. Since I would be rich, I'd go would go into big game hunting and I would do something with conservation. Yeah, I know, preserve the environment so I can go into the arctic, forest, safari, or jungle to I can kill animals, the irony is amazing.
