Well, I just play whatever music I'm into at the time.

If she really can't stand it, she'll say it's crap and I'll tell her "get fvcked it's awesome" and maybe turn it down a bit.

I listen to basically anything, but I can't stand techno.

I listen to emo bands a lot. Not the kind that scream all the time, the kind that actually sings and has some awesome chorus'.

Not random crap like Parkway Drive, can't stand screamo - but like emo.

I'm not singling out rap. I'm singling out the sh!it people listen to. A tribe called quest, beastie boys, those are good rap bands, songs like ridin dirty and lean with it rock with it are not.

songs like "lean with it rock with it" by Dem Franchize Boyz and "donk" by soulja boy are good in certain settings like a beach party ora dance club. I like A tribe called Qwest but I wouldnt dare put that type of music on in a party setting because most women would not dance to it.

The mainstream of any genre is typically going to be dominated by crap because it's designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to sell as many units as possible. If you want quality anything, you're generally going to have to go looking for it.

As for the question of this thread, play whatever the hell you want. I can see why some people prefer to just keep it turned down in the background, but personally I like to crank whatever I'm listening to and give her a silly serenade. The more outrageous, the better. Gets her laughing and gets the energy level up. Works like a charm.
