2 weeks until I graduate from high school and i still have no idea what I want to do.

I thought about being a professional musician, but the pay is ****ty, competition is fierce and you need to practice 5-6 hours a day. You also miss most holidays and it's just sh1t.

I can't think of one thing that I would like to do for the rest of my life.
I'm good at math and science, but I can't stand them.
I hate my math and science classes.

I sort of like jobs that require social skills and interaction, but how in the world would you get those jobs? I mean, if I go into business and get a degree, how the fvck would I get a job?

I thought about being a doctor, but it's just too much fvcking school.
I'll be in my 30's when I actually become a doctor. I basically will not be able to leave the house because of so much studying until I'm 30.

If you are happy with you life, can you tell me how you decided what you were going to do? What type of jobs do you guys have and why you enjoy them?

This is the advice I wish I heard when I was your age:

Don't be a doctor and definitely do not be a musician as a career where you will need to pay the bills. Work is work. Play is play.

If I could do it all over again I would have gotten my 4 year computr science undergraduate degree (psych minor) and then immediately started working. No grad school. No nothing else.

You will pull ~50 your first year out and by 28-30 you should have worked at 2, maybe 3 different jobs and now be making aroun 80 with bonuses, etc.

Play music in your free time. Work hard play hard.

Good luck.

What's wrong with being a doctor?

That's really stupid advice. (The Don't be a doctor part) I'm studying to be a Doctor and while the study hours and workload is relatively harder then some other courses it doesn't mean i don't enjoy it/it takes away all my social time. It boils down to how well i manage my time and prioritize.
for example: I play piano and guitar in my spare time, hit the gym 4x a week and have a few games of basketball/tennis once or twice a week. Plus have time to hit the club/bar when i feel like it.

At the end of the day find what it is that you have the drive for, essentially that 'passion'. Whatever happens don't lose sight of it and just keep plugging away at it. There will be times when you question yourself, hurdles will appear but these are obstacles that will appear whatever you do. If you shy away in your attempts at breaking past these obstacles you won't go anywhere.

A quote i read from someplace i can't remember. 'obstacles appear when you take your eyes off your goal'. (Or something like that, however, this quote couldn't be more true)

Living your life to sleep with more women, become rich etc. What's the point in that? They're nice 'small,' goals. Don't let it sidetrack you in your pursuit of that passion. After all, it's the journey, not the destination.

Now, if you're straight out of high school, i really recommend you take a year off and do something productive. Don't sit at home. Go visit another country and really experience it! Do something wild, something out of the normal and give yourself a little space to realize it's not a race, it's what you make of it.

I really regret that i didn't do this after i had finished high school. While some people moved onto that 'next stage,' of education easily and adapted well, i found myself to be studying quite aimlessly. My grades reflected it and while i learned from the experience it felt a lot harsher then it could have been.

Essentially from what I've felt/realized is that one really should never lose sight of that goal. You will second guess yourself, you will doubt yourself, I'm going to go on a limb and say your worth will be determined by how much further you can push yourself past those anxieties in your 'pursuit of happiness'.

but yeah, you're out of high school, take some time to breathe, refocus and then sprint for all you're worth.

You essentially upped your VALUE in her eyes by showing her that, if she wants you, she has to at times do things that you like to do. You are SOMETHING after all. You are NOT FREE. If she wants to hang with you, it's going to cost her something — time, effort, money.

so are you saying that i should take a year break between high school and college?

cause my parents and I talked about that.
they wanted to give me one year to really play violin and see how good i can get.

and then go to college?
I've never heard of anyone that has done that before but... I think it seems like a good idea, but what do you think?

Become a nurse. Nurses will be really needed soon. If there's any job that's recession-proof it's a nurse. I'm tempted to marry a girl because of that very fact that she's almost head nurse at the best hospital in town. Plus my job will probably disable me to where I'll need care 24/7, so.

Thanks for commenting on that.

I'm an undergraduate in biochem these days, and being a doctor is probably one of the most fulfilling careers you can pursue. Ok, it's a lot of hard-work and studying, but once you're in Medical school you're pretty much guaranteed to graduate. Also doctor is probably the #1 recession proof job out there.

It doesn't matter what 99% of the forum board here thinks. It's ultimately really up to you. Do what you really feel, in your core, is what you want to do.

Plenty of people take a break between high school and college. It's what i believe i should have done. Would have given me more maturity and a better sense of the world. But like it's been said, that break HAS to be productive. Don't waste away playing WoW or some mundane crap like that. Play the violin, aim to be the best, see what options open up for you. You'll learn heaps - just do it. But once you find that 'snap,' run with it.

Well, join the military and shoot some guys in iraq or go to college, get into a ton of debt and work for the rest of your life as a slave to settle the debt.

That's basically the two options kids have these days after they graduate high school.

There are many ways to gain higher education without debt or certain loan forgiveness programs.

Military and College or College then military are options as well. Both can fit well together

I've decided for now that I'll major in music my first year in college.
See how I like that, and either go all music or switch to med or something.
