Hey guys I'm 16 and quite slim and would like to start to bulk up a bit this year. I play soccer and I'm very fit and have a good fit body it is just a bit skinny and I would like to add some muscle. I started going a few times last year but got out of the routine. I got up to about 35kgs on the benchpress but now I have to start again and am kind of dissapointed but I'm going to take it seriously now.

I just want some advide on whether is it too young to start going full at it or not. Also how many times a week would be reccomended for my age and how much should I be lifting? I'm slim and quite tall around 6'2.

Also what age did you guys start lifiting and how hard did you go at first?

Well you probably are at the age where u can do some heavy weights. The only thing you need to remember is that ur body is still changing, going through puberty. But, every man for himself, some people finish puberty early, some later. If ur still growing taller, then ur still in puberty, and you need to be careful with how much weight you lift, cause putting too much pressure on changing muscles can lead to future problems.

I started when i was 19...well yeah so 5 months ago, basically after i'd finished school. But i reckon u'll be pretty right to hit most of the weights, do what you want, just remember that your body is most likely still changing, and you really should just be looking to tone ur body, not turn out like governor arnie.

If u still have questions, speak to the gym trainer, he should answer ur questions free of charge, at least, they better.

Generally speaking, once you hit puberty, you could hit the weights. As far as I know there is nothing wrong with heavy lifting, ever. I mean hell, when you're a kid and you wrestle with your buddies, thats close to heavy lifting. Nobody ever says "You can't carry the groceries because they're too heavy and might stunt your growth" now do they?

How much should you be lifting is an irrelevant question. The only thing you need to worry about, weight wise is how much you ARE lifting, and making sure that the weight is going up each and every week.

How many days? A 3 day split is recommended. Check this one out.

yeah, i used to see this 13-14 year old kid at the gym with his dad,
doing benches and stuff.

you must remember that when your growth plates are open, especially during puberty, heavy weights will compress them and limit your growth. this won't happen if you do occasional heavy weights, but daily weights will definitely do that to you.

I started weight lifting at 19, saw my peak at 22, and at 24 my body is feeling the pains of many many injuries.

I think the best time to start is around 16 because you can reap the most benefits from it in the middle of high school, trying to get laid, fighting other kids, making some other jock friends. I wish i I started earlier.

Ha For a second there I was thinking "What the hell is this kid talking about? I never said anything about him saying it."

But yes, lifting, when done with proper form, will not have any seriously negative side effects. You may feel weaker right after your work outs, but thats about it. If you eat right and get enough sleep, your entire body will benefit from lifting.

I started at 15. 15-16 is pretty much the perfect age to start lifting heavy weights. Find a decent 2-3 day/week fullbody split and do some research on diet if you want to get good results.
