We've got to stop suggesting only protein on here.

Between all the flaming/egotism, and since we are talking about carbs...

Are fruits a good source of carbs? I eat 4500+ calories, the diet consisting of meat, fruits, and milk (trying to gain weight). During chat night some of you guys told me fruits may make me fat, but even with the large amount of fruits and milk (10 whole fruits + 10 cups milk per day), I didn't gain fat. I actually think I shed off some fat (according to the mirror), but the scale still said 155.

So are fruits as good a source of carbs as say, wheat rice and wheat bread? I don't like rice and bread so much; I like fruits because they are juicy. But if other sources are better (will give gains that is, not worried about the sugar) I can make changes.

Edit:

you can get all the carbs you need to build muscle from fruits & vegetables, and not even the highest-GI varieties.

hunter gatherers didn't eat sandwiches.
Missed this post, guess this answers my question. Thanks.

You need them in the morning and around training to fuel growth, recovery and repair. But they need to be tailored to the individual and not over consumed else they are prone to fat storage when you are bulking. But when you're bulking you are going to have to accept fat gain, especially if you want to add muscle over a long period of time. That's one of the sacrifices I'm afraid.

MM

yeah I know, unless you are a genetic freak! however it's not that big a sacrifice as having a naturally high metabolism the fat shouldn't be too hard to burn of when the time comes

First off there really isn't much flaming/egotism. You'll know when we flame ;)

Fruits are not going to make the average skinny person fat. Your OVER ALL caloric consumption is what makes people fat, and the lack of physical activity.

What I mentioned to you, is that while fruits are great, you have GOT to get more of a variety of foods in your diet. Milk, meat and fruit is great, but change some stuff up man. Grains have their purpose in the diet. There are good fibers in whole grains that you will not find in most fruit. Your healthy fats.... Where are they? Fat from milk is NOT the same. What about fish?
What about egg protein? Egg protein is one of the best over all protein sources. Variety is key. And not just for gaining size, but over all health. Fruits are amazing, but they still lack what other foods do. So switch it up man. Beef is not the same as chicken, and just as broccoli is not the same as an apple.

Forget that anyone said that fruit will make you fat, especially if you are 155lbs and anywhere above the 5'6 or 5'7 range. If you were 4'7 and 155lbs we'd need to worry.

And dont forget the thermic effect of food too. Your still burning probably 100-200 calories trying to chew and digest fuit eating it 10x per day.

Its not extremely huge, but think about it.

Option 1: You eat 1 bagel with some jam and its 300cal.

Option2: You eat 5 small apples at 60cal each.

You will burn more calories chewing, and digesting 5 apples vs 1 bagel.

Same with like liquid. You dont have to chew liquid, so you dont burn as many calories as you would eating WHOLE foods.

Do this 10x per day with whole fruit, you prob do burn more than you think.

Those are some interesting points. I thought fruits were a complex carbohydrate and that all complex carbohydrates were the same. Now that you have pointed that out, I am going to start eating oatmeal (flavored kind, with lots of sugar  ) for some meals instead of fruits.

As far as healthy fats, do I really need to worry about that? I eat steak and chicken, which has fat in it. I don't eat eggs because I don't like them; same thing for whey. I take 2 grams of fish oil at the end of the day now, something I have never done before. Maybe this will help me.

I also have to consider the training I am doing now. I work out 4 out of 5 days, the fifth being a rest day. I do strength training one of those days, and the other days some kind of conditioning (short stuff, conditioning running, burpees, interval sprinting, etc). Basically the stuff from Rosstraining.com. I know I'll be burning even more calories doing this, but it's neceesary for my sport (tennis). No slow, long distance running here...

I want to be 180 lbs, as someone told me that's a good weight for my height (6 feet). No more, no less, 180 lbs lean is my goal to maximize potential (and look good  )

Don't make the mistake about caring about numbers...go until you are truly happy with what is in the mirror

I just read that Punisha thread.

Everyone was suggesting a certain protein intake and a certain calorie intake. This is saying to eat carbs and fats implicitly.

So this is a pointless thread.
