Since this forum has become increasingly lax about politics, I'll jump in. Libertarians don't believe in income taxes (that's the US party line) BECAUSE they don't believe the government should operate social programs. Libertarians believe that the US federal government should be restrained to its constitutional duties, namely providing for the common defense and keeping law and order in the country. There's nothing in the constitution that says the federal government should help its people out with handouts. Case in point: during a very bad drought in the Midwest in the late 1800s where farmers were starving to death, President Grover Cleveland said he couldn't find anything in the constitution that required the federal government to help the victims out. THAT'S libertarianism.

It would everyone in America with a lot more freedom and a much greater percentage of their earnings (No income tax! No Social Security! No Medicare deductions!) at the cost of a compassionate government that provides a "safety net" for its citizens. I used to be a libertarian till I grew a heart :)

that still was a tasteless thing to say even though you may have found it funny. i dont think tim russert would have burst out laughing nor the other 99.99999 percent of those who saw that would either.

oh and by the way, bush is an idiot, regardless of party affiliation, for appointing an incompetent person to head FEMA

I strongly disagree with your views about social programs and the legalization of drugs. Sorry, but I don't trust society to help the needy of their own accord. And I strongly oppose drugs. Likewise, I don't think drug addicts or alcoholics should be tossed in jail when they break the law. Instead, there should be government run intensive rehab centers that people who break the law due to drug and alcohol use should go to for a full year at least.

Read it again. I'm not a libertarian and I don't agree with their rosy view of human nature.

I didn't think social programs were necessary prior to the Hurricane catastrophe (i believe in everyman for themself). But after seeing what will happen if government intervention doesn't occur and the helpless aren't taken care of(looting, murdering, sex crimes, and violence), i am all for it now!
