Since this forum has become increasingly lax about politics, I'll jump in. Libertarians don't believe in income taxes (that's the US party line) BECAUSE they don't believe the government should operate social programs. Libertarians believe that the US federal government should be restrained to its constitutional duties, namely providing for the common defense and keeping law and order in the country. There's nothing in the constitution that says the federal government should help its people out with handouts. Case in point: during a very bad drought in the Midwest in the late 1800s where farmers were starving to death, President Grover Cleveland said he couldn't find anything in the constitution that required the federal government to help the victims out. THAT'S libertarianism.Originally posted by Wyldfire
Libertarians don't believe in taxes (we need tax money to pay for social programs) and think drugs should be legalized. That's what turns me off to that party. Those are two deal breakers for me.
It would everyone in America with a lot more freedom and a much greater percentage of their earnings (No income tax! No Social Security! No Medicare deductions!) at the cost of a compassionate government that provides a "safety net" for its citizens. I used to be a libertarian till I grew a heart
