Okay, guys, give me your opinion on what clothes to wear tonight.

Background. I met this chick at happy hour Friday. A buddy of mine - his wife was pimping me out and I came home with four #'s. (Yeah, social proof works.)

Erica and I macked some at happy hour - I told her that if I was going to take her out I needed to know if she was a good kisser. She replied she needed to know if I was a good kisser. Well, she was good enough to earn a date.

I'm taking her to a Tex/Mex place overlooking the lake - it's outdoors and casual. I don't want to appear too aloof or too casual but it's a casual spot and I would look odd/desperate/unsavvy to overdress. I was just going to wear cargo shorts, sandals and a short sleeve button down shirt untucked. Any comments?

Cargo shorts and sandals? What is this, Miami Vice?

I'd opt for normal trousers (cream coloured) and an untucked plain deep blue long sleeve button shirt with the sleeves rolled up just beneath your elbows, but that's only because I have style. Sneakers or shoes/boots could go with this, but if your worried about being overdressed, then white sneakers would work.

But seriously if you go in cargo shorts and sandals make sure to wear a white rimmed hat and big-@ss brown sunglasses. And your shirt totally has to be red with huge white flowers on it. And stick a fly-swatter in your back pocket. And finish the ensemble off with a pipe which never leaves your mouth.

Mort, I totally disagree with what you said. You sound like a preppy. Nothing wrong with that, thats just your style and what you feel comfortable in. As for out man here, if he feels comfortable in cargo shorts (which tons of people here in the states where) and a decent shirt and nice sandals, I see nothing wrong with that...at all.

Thanks, o/p. I was thinking that someone in the US may have a different opinion. I should have mentioned that it's going to be 98 degrees here today so the thought of long pants outside would be killer. Sneakers are definitely "out" for someone my age where I live. This guy got the wrong "Miami Vice" picture, too. I'll ask a woman/friend for her 2 cents.

Well what I would wear out, and what you would wear out are different.

Cargo shorts aren't something I would wear out on a first date, but I would wear them just on a daily casual basis.

I would wear a nice pair of pressed claiborne summer/casual looking linen pants, some nice shoes, and a new shirt, probably something from claiborne men's again.

Matching shoes and belt of course

In other words.... you're a sandal and short wearer too.

You sound like a preppy.
I don't know what that is. We don't have "preppy's" in Australia. At least, not that I'm aware of.

I totally agree. Thing is, asking people online what you should wear is pretty silly in the first place. Many of us are from different countries, different cultures, different sub-cultures, different economic backgrounds, etc etc. Our social groups all have different fashions that change over time, and we all try to have our own unique fashion that also changes with the times to never be completely dorky.

Over here, cargo shorts are dorky. Over here, sandals are super-lame. And for those in the upper eschelons of style cognizance, short sleeve shirts are also a no-no, though they are better than long-sleeve shirts with the sleeves all the way down and buttoned at the cuffs. Over here, most of your average mofos wear pink/white graffiti shirts with pre-torn sleeves, with their pre-faded pre-patched pre-stained jeans and slip-on sneakers. So to be different, I wear smart casual, like the sort of thing a billionaire playboy might wear while all his Armani suits are at the cleaners.

So it's like I said: if this guy wants to ask for clothing advice on an internet forum, I'll be happy to oblige him with any advice I can give, no matter how ill-suited it will be to his individual situation.

To the topic starter: if you're gonna ask a chick what you should wear, make sure it's a chick who is very hot and dresses like a model (as opposed to dressing like your average slvt). That's the only kind of chick I'd take fashion advice from.
