It is well known that UVA and UVB light from the sun is the major cause of skin aging. The formal term for it is "dermatoheliosis".
Normal aging of the skin involves accentuation of lines around areas of tension, such as the "crows feet", "smile lines", and "brow lines".
Sun-damage aging causes the skin to become thin like cigar paper. This thinness allows the dermal blood vessels to be visible, giving the skin a reddish hue. Furthermore, the skin shows a rough texture. Freckles and moles appear in areas where the sun has damaged enough melanocytes to cause an overgrowth of those cells. Then there's the whole cancer thing!
All of the old people walking around nowadays, wrinkly and papery, are not supposed to look THAT old. They were told in the 50s that tanning was good for them, so they did it copiously.
The unfortunate reality is that this damage takes years to manifest itself. The sunburn you got when you were 17 will show up as dematoheliosis at 40. I bet those old women would have not tanned at all if they knew the truth then.
However, you can prevent further damage by wearing SPF 60 sunscreen every day in every season(yes, even winter). Re-apply it every two hours if you are out in the sun.
Women should really take this advice as well. There is nothing worse than seeing a girl who was once very attractive slowly morph into a lizard-like medusa because of her past, and likely current, obsession with tanning.
