From the song: Men at work - the Land down under.

Studying the lyrics - and came across 'the Vegemite sandwhich' and thought, gee, this looks like an interesting bread spread. It has a salty brewer's yeast base and is spread on bread along with butter or cream cheese. It's a staple food in Australia.

My mom's from Trinidad, which used to be owned by Britian, so she was used to the Marmite product which is similar to the Vegemite. They sell Marmite in Caribbean stores, but it's not the same as the Vegemite. I'd like to try both bread spreads with toast to see how they taste like.

So, this is on my list. Go to a store to buy a bunch of sliced bread that can be toasted, along with butter, cream cheese, and then go hunting to find the Marmite spread, and then look for an Australian store to find the Vegemite spread. So far I've been lucky enough to find one store in my city that may sell the Vegemite spread, and if so, I'll have to rush in and buy it, and find out the secret Austrailian food.

Do you come from the land down under and would like to share how the Vegemite spread tastes like before I try it myself?

Vegemite tastes SO bad. I tried it a few years back and the only reason australians can even stand it is because they grew up on it.

I'm Australian.

Vegemite is good.

You wouldn't spread it like a normal topping though.

Toast your bread.

Spread your margerine, put a very light layer of vegemite on.

When I make peanut butter on toast, I slam the peanut butter on REALLY thick. You would be insane to do this with vegemite.

Give it a try. One jar of vegemite will not convert you and make you go, DAMN I NEED MORE VEGEMITE..

But its good to experience new things.

I like your style. :)

Let us know what you think.

I don't like vegemite at all. I have tried it before, its too salty, has a strong bitter taste and it, quite frankly, looks a lot like **** smeared across toast. I don't ever use butter or margerine either as i hate that stuff too, so yuk. I know that you are all going to tell me to wash my mouth out with soap but i don't care.

Vegemite isn't as bad as people make it sound. It's "different", that's for sure. It is one of those things that you have to have a taste for. Just as some people don't like coffee or beer, some dislike vegemite. Myself, appreciating that fact before trying it, didn't find it nearly as offensive as others.

But then again, my idea of a perfect pizza is anchovies and bacon, maybe with some jalapenos... mmm. My father explained it to me thus: Italy is surrounded on three sides by water. With all those fishing villages, don't you think anchovies BELONG on pizza?

So, with the culture in mind, things taste different because you get over the "Ewww... gross!" factor in your head. Ever try sushi? Same deal: "Raw fish? Eww.... gross!"

Vegemite is an Australian icon. Ask any Australian, and they'll be able to sing you a few lines of the Vegemite Kids jingle, if not all of it. It's became so popular because of it's nutritional value. There is an amazing amount of vitamins and protein in it, so parents fed it to their kids.

All you weight lifters should consider having Vegemite around to throw in your shakes - usually they're nasty anyway, right?

Yeah I didn't like it when I tried it. I still have a very small bottle in my fridge.

But I tried it only once and ate it plain off the spoon (big mistake!). If you ever want to vomit, this is a good product!

I will give it a try again in another form!

First of all, that song by men at work is awesome!

Vegamite is good, and very very healthy! But as someone said above, spread it lightly! Its a very strong taste, and probably an aquired taste.

Spam, YooHoo, Ovaltine, Vegemite...

Products named on a day the marketing guy was sick.

You HAVE to have it with a lot of melted butter, put a light spread on the toast and it will taste nice. Don't bother eating it on its own or in thick spread form, you only need to spread a little bit on.

Vegemite is key man, don't bash it.

I eat it like every day bro. My cuz from the USA hates the stuff, I don't get it.

Use it sparingly, dont smear it on like chocolate or its dirt.

This week, I finally did it. Went to No Frills and purchased a bottle of Marmite for four dollars and tried it with some bread and butter. Has a very unique intense salty taste that tastes like a brewyer's yeast spread form.

The taste just stays in your mouth for hours after you take one of it. But again the drawback is it's very salty.

It doesn't seem to be easy to find the Vegemite brand, but I decided to settle with this Marmite. I've also purchased Cheese-Mite rolls from an Aussie shop here in Toronto, which is another Assie food, and think it tastes alright, of course the Vegemite on it is diluted, but you can still taste it.

The Marmite / Vegemite leaves a nice taste at the back of the tongue and leaves an interesting after-tastes that lingers in for a long time. Definately I'd recommend it as one of those things to try once in your life-time, but not more than that because of it's high salt content.
