US State with the mildest weather

Hey all,

I plan on moving to the US in the next 2-3 years. Initially the move will probably be to Minnesota for school, but afterwards, I'm not really sure where to settle. The US has so many different states and such a wide variety of climatic regions, its a bit overwhelming!

I currently live in the Northern-most large city (pop ~1 000 000) in the Western Hemisphere. The summers are gorgeous, but winters last around 7 months and it can get friggin cold! For example, with windchill factored in, the temp yesterday morning was -49 C (that's -56 F). We have snow banks that are 6-feet high in my neighborhood. Walking down the sidewalk in most neighborhoods gives the impression that you're in a war zone walking through a trench because one side has 5-6 feet high snow banks! I'd love to live in a place where it doesn't snow and the temperature is mild all year round. I don't mind warm, as long as its not >100 F for like months on end, but am getting kinda sick of snow and the cold.

I've heard places like Tennessee, Western Texas, and Oregon are great. I really loved Northern California when I visited.

Any info on this matter would be appreciated!

Well the winters in Minnesota are some of the worst in the lower 48, but nothing like Alberta. That's God's country up there.

The best weather in the US is found in the West. California is the most optimal, hence the expense to live there. Nevada and Arizona have some amazing desert scenery but it gets hotter than hell out there. I've heard nothing but good things about Texas, hot babes like the salmon of Capistrano.

The midwest is a somewhat crappy place to live. Gloomy winters, humid as a mfer in the summer. The west (and southwest by proxy) is the best.

You children sound like old sterile women. Talking about weather. A bit odd for such young boys.

I grew up in Michigan, and went through a million cold winters like you do. I have since moved to CA, and love the weather here. I am in S. CA. The LA area. In the month of January, we had one day with clouds. And it was partly cloudy haha and still 70. Every other day in Jan was sunny and 75-85. Same as today, the first day of Feb. You have no idea how nice it is to wake up every morning to the sun shining and the birds chirping in the middle of winter. If you live inland a little, like in LA or Pasadena, summers can get hot, usually 80-95, but there is no humidity at all, so its not bad. Next to the water, like in Santa Monica or Huntington Beach, the summers are a little cooler, maybe 70-80 each day. But you go inland 3 miles and its 90. Winters are a few degrees cooler as well.

Of course, it cost a tad more to live here :). But there are still many reasonable areas to find housing.

I'd say Northern California for mild winters and the summer not as hot as Southern California.

I was stationed at Camp Pendleton (Home of the 1st Marines, down by San Diego) and our barracks were a half mile from the ocean. I slept with my windows open, year-round.

Man those sea breezes, baja landscape and hot ladies everywhere...this February I am definitely California dreamin'.

Thanks for the feedback guys... Sounds like California is a great choice. I've visited there a few times and loved it. San Fran is an amazing city and the people are really friendly. I actually proposed to my fiance on the middle of the Golden Gate in the middle of a friggin Squall! But that's another story...

The level of education of the people and the culture in San Fran was quite refreshing. Northern Cali is gorgeous. Not a huge fan of LA and SoCal just because of the congestion etc. Its crazy how in the US there's towns everywhere. You can drive a few hours and pass tons of towns, cities, etc. In Canada everything is spread out. You can drive for 7-8 hours at highway speeds and still be in the same province. In places like Europe you drive that much and you can traverse 3 countries!

To put it into perspective, my province, Alberta, is around 1.5 times the area of California with around 1/10th the population! You go further up north, and the Northwest territories basically have an area larger than India with like maybe 150 000 people! I LOVE this clip from x-men that's set in Northern Alberta!! Totally cracks me up every time! All we do up in the North is drink and fight in cages at the bar!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9RNjd918tQ

Popular cultural perception of Canada is hilarious!

Anyways, getting back on topic, the only knocks I can see against California are higher housing costs, a poor government and high risk of seismic events.

As far as other states go, I have some family in Houston, Tx and I've seen that the housing costs there are low (relative to Alberta anyways). Furthermore, Texas is a great place for anesthetists, as wages tend to be quite high. Plus I look Mexican, so I'd fit right in! I'd like to hear from someone living in Texas.

Has anyone here lived in Oregon, Washington or Colorado?

I never liked Cali...way to overpopulated due to all those shows showing how awesome Cali is even though its broke and all the wildfires.

I'm in TX the deep TX almost at the point where it touches Mexico.

3 things that describe this place.
1.HOT
2.Slow
3.Easy

1. This place is almost 95% hot or humid the entire time, christmas well be prepared to have it looking like every other day since we never get hit by snow...our lowest temp record is 32 i think.
2. The cities down here are very slow unless you move to a big place like SA,Austin,Dallas,Houston every other place is very affordable and sloooooow. I like it like that but thats just me.
3. The weather is usually never a problem except for the ocassional cold fronts which is usally just called for a light to medium jacket. The only thing we need to worry about is Hurricanes and even then it has to get into the gulf which is a very hard thing to do so hurricanes are very rare but do happen from time to time.

I could use some warm weather these days. Was so f----- cold yesterday that I wasn't even hard driving to work. First time in over six months I didn't get hard driving to the office. I was concerned that I might be going impotent. At my age it can happen. So the first thing I did when I got to the office was lock myself up in my little office and jerk off into the trash can. Was so nice to know that it was still working.

Thanks for the info Jon. How's El Paso? I was looking at medium-sized cities, as I'm not a huge fan of big azz places like the Dallas-Fort worth zone. Texas is sounding more and more appealing!

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

I've never liked the really humid weather. Just saps the energy right out of you. Might as well move into the jungle. Michigan, my home state, can get really humid during the summer and I never liked it. While in CA...Imagine during the winter having it sunny and 65-85 every day. There was one day in the entire month of Jan where it was partly cloudy. Every other day? Not a cloud in the sky. At night it gets down to around 45-50 during the winter. Summer, usually 80-90, with nights dipping into the 50's. With NO humidity. LOVE it.

Fugly I don't know if you like to go out and do stuff or not, or if you are more of a homebody. But I can tell you with driving distance for me I have Las Vegas, beaches/ocean, mountains/lakes, Hollywood, horse race tracks, tons of golf, beach vball, 8 different pro sports teams, all kinds of concert venues, great bars and rest's., clubs everywhere, Malibu/Santa Monica/Laguna Beach/Orange county. So much to do. You will never get bored.

Yes the trafffic can suck here in the LA area at times. But it isn't THAT bad.

I like exactly where i live (home). South Jersey, cherry hill.

You get ALL FOUR SEASONs every year. Where i'm from you're close to Atlantic City (1hr), NYC (1.5hr), 20 minutes from Philadelphia, and you're also in the burbs. My city i believe was voted one of the best cities to live in the US.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_Hill,_New_Jersey

I don't like cities too much. I like a more relaxed environment where i have the choice of heading into the city if i want. I think the medical field especially nursing is heavily saturated here though. My whole family (my generation) are all in the medical field.

Definitely get the impression that there's tons to do in SoCal! I'm probably gonna end up with a kid in the next 5 years though, and combined with work, school and competing, can't really see myself going out a whole helluva lot. I love being up in the mountains, camping, hiking, white water rafting, etc. We have tons of that in Canada... hell the country's over 40% forest! Not really a huge fan of clubs, casinos, horse racing, etc. I do love NFL and MMA, hockey's okay too, so it would be nice to live in a place close to an NFL team. I do find SoCal pretty congested, but that's because I've lived in Canada most of my life.... shiit is super duper spread out here! I also don't like the idea of raising kids in SoCal, as the place seems too materialistic and superficial.

AAAgent, same goes for the Northeastern US. I know its nice to be in the middle of everything and still be in the 'burbs, but I think there's just way too many people in the "Bos-Wash" megalopolis. You guys have been getting some insane blizzards there lately hey? I'm like you in that I'm not a huge city kinda guy... its nice to have all the services, but I rather live in a small to average size city (pop < 500 000). Anesthesia is typically the most lucrative in smaller towns where most service providers don't wanna go.

More Americans are looking for work in Canada than vice versa these days. The Canadian economy is and will be stronger. Has to do with demographics and natural resources. Canada encourages educated people to immigrate. America doesn't. That is why Canada is more diverse than America these days (just go visit Toronto or Montreal and compare it to Chicago or NYC).

Lets not forget that this boy needs to get a work visa. Do you have any clue how difficult that is in the current economy? Then he needs residency. I could go on.

Funny how he is from Alberta. Calgary is one of the hottest towns in North America for job growth. The place is booming. He sounds more like a lost boy. America is no refuge. That is for sure.

I grew up in Santa Monica, CA. Hell on earth. If you are gay I would check it out, otherwise you will be pumping iron like Cordon. Hoping that a SE Asian tramp will look your way. Only difference is Cordon's family could not afford the insane costs of Santa Monica.

Basically, if I had to live in one North American area it would be Quebec. That is one part of North America where you can find people who detest the Anglo way of life as much as I (or any sane straight male) does. The only annoying thing about Quebec are the 16 year old American teenagers who come up to buy booze. Montreal also has a huge Anglo university that f--- things up. I would like to see Quebec ban all Anglo schools of higher learning.

I agree that the Canadian economy is stronger and will continue to be so. Truth be told in Edmonton, AB, where I currently reside, we didn't even flinch at the whole worldwide financial meltdown. Calgary took a much bigger hit than us. I do pretty well up here, I make a low 6-figure income, live in a half million dollar house, and generally have a pretty easy life. I am a critical care nurse, and the next logical career step is to pursue anesthesia. To be a gas guy in Canada you gotta be a full fledged anesthesiologist.... it would take me another 10+ years of school to accomplish this. However, most anesthetics in the US, are administered by CRNAs. With my existing training/education it would only take me another 2-3 years of school to do that. We don't have CRNAs in Canada yet. I already have 8 years of university, so I'd much rather do 2-3 more than 10 more!

As a CRNA you can make >200K, and the job itself is actually quite chill, provided you know what you're doing. Its also an in-demand job as many experienced providers are retiring, and general population is getting older, creating a larger demand for specialized healthcare services. I have no plans to invest in the US, other than maybe buying a house, and will be investing my money back into Alberta.

US healthcare companies get boners for Canadian-trained critical care nurses. They hook you up with visas, work permits, help with moving costs and even pay for your apartment. I don't anticipate too many issues getting a work permit and all the other associated stuff. True that I will take a wage cut initially, however, in the end it'll totally be worth it. I'll definitely get dual-citizenship as I can't see myself living in the US for the rest of my life. Would be nice to spend the winters down there and the summers up here when I'm older.

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

nice. first time i've seen an online eh (hey??). Ya man its crazy down here. Snowing every week atleast once sometimes 3 times. We've had the highest accumulated snow in the middle atlantic/tri-state area ever. I don't know what to do about my car....everytime i shovel it out, it gets snowed back in. Now the snow is frozen since it has rain recently.

I actually was reading all the posts and totaly forgot about your mild weather topic and was naming good places. One of my friends lives in Oklahoma. He says its pretty nice and spread out over there. It's not as hot but still hot and not as packed as texas is.

Oh but you are gay. You are very VERY gay, as illustrated by these past posts. These are all posts you have written in just the last couple of months. You are so GAY, you think getting a manicure is masculine. I take it the gays in Santa Monica didn't take to you very well? Hence your hatred of America? Gays got ya down huh?

I have never been but they say El-Paso is very slow and humid a big football city. Most jobs there are pretty easy to get due to it being a small town for such a big city.

Concord-
I agree the humidity is what gets you in TX. I would LOVE 68 most of the time but usually the temp is around 80-90 but the humidity kicks that temp up by 10 degrees and it always feels like its in the 100's. But due to that I dont have to worry about ice, snow, torential downpour, its usually just coldfronts.

Right now everyone is in the low degrees but where I live a light jacket with a long sleeve will keep you warm.

haha, didn't even realise I did that!!! That's ****ty... its nice to have a garage, but still means you gotta shovel the driveway and stuff. I think I'll probably end up in the midwest somewhere or maybe Texas. I'm a cheap bastard, I love football and hot weather, and I look Mexican... I'm totally built for Tx!
