Re:

At least for me, if you need money and can't hustle it in some way, then a job is your only means. Some can sling things around, like cars, or get into drugs for a time being, ebay, etc, just to get-going. I never hustled, but i have friends who sold cars from auction, to lots, for awhile, and made cash, mostly tax free for a few years. If they wanted more money, they'd have had to open a lot, which is much more costly and requires more than just sporadic sales of cars to keep running.

As men, we identify with our purpose. But a man's purpose normally isn't confined to one specific role, job, or task all our lives. Men who are engineers, might be artists. Men who are businessmen, might enjoy working with their hands. I have a father who's great with construction, and a brother who is talented with music. Me? Who knows? Life's a journey though.

This is where the dichotomy (split) between society and individual life butts heads. Society is established in such a way that if you're not producing, you're not useful. And it's established in such a way that either you're self employed, and entrepreneur, independently wealthy, crafty, or have butt loads of degrees to compensate, or you really can't survive but in the faintest of populated areas.

The biggest thing, at least to me, is we search OUTSIDE ourselves for answers on "what to do." That will NEVER lead to happiness. One cannot seek happiness OUTSIDE of him/herself. You won't find it out there. It exists in you, and therefore, whatever you do to bring yourself income should be what you enjoy, or AT LEAST what you can do to bring in the most income. There's tons of people who exist like that, work on their craft/hobby, and then go full-time in the future. I believe we need a good plan to live today, because tomorrow is no guarantee. I know guys who were programmers for 20years, accumulated sizeable retirement assets and studied martial arts during those 20 years. They now have the freedom to persue their hobby full-time, retirement dollars to invest, AND, some capital to bridge the transition. It might not be IDEAL, but there's no such thing as IDEAL anyways.

The real answer is...what do I do today?

Do a job you enjoy. Anything. Something. Get income and experience. Challenge yourself. During college I worked 10-20 different jobs. Some I hated and loathed myself for taking, others I loved and met friends thru. It isn't about perfect. It's about making progress.

In a year, how do you want to look back on life? In a day, how do you want to look back on what you could have done? In a week? In a month?

Read some AYN RAND if you need any motivation on being a person who stands alone aganst the tide of a faulty, fake society. Mark Cuban called "Fountainhead" his gospel and bible, that he'd read it hundreds of times, and would read it to get "pumped up." Shockingly, people ridicule it, but it only proves to be a catch-22 because those who ridicule it might never have read it, OR, understand the varying philosophical messages. At least, the book makes you think and provides new words to learn, something TV and video games CANNOT provide.

BUILD YOURSELF up in value so that you're MORE VALUABLE as a person.

~Learn languages.
~Learn martial arts.
~Learn to be determined, full of will power, crafty, and ingenuity.
~Learn philosophy.
~Learn about investing, business, and finance.
~Improve your sales skills.

Even if you take a job BELOW you for now, you can still use FREE resources to get ahead. You can use the library for most things and self teach. In that, there's no excuse for not rising above our current position in life. But you have to WANT it. There's no MODEL progression from school to college to internships to life. Life itself is a fight for survival. The jungle, the animals, everything, wakes up each day and its a challenge. The only thing NOT believing it should be a challenge is the EGO, because it wants this nice, cushy WORLD built around it, like some perfect looking myspace site, or like some fake TV prop set.

Jobs are but a component of who we are.

Another great read..."The Way of the Peaceful Warrior." Read it.

Keep a journal.

Rewatch the Secret. Realize ALL you're creating is because of what you think/believe. If you believed differently, you would in fact, FIND A WAY. I'm not knocking you, everybody goes through it, nobody's perfect, especially me, but as an impartial outsider who's been there and felt it, I know. And sometimes we have to rise above what we are and where we are and say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH." Use will power, committ to improving and growing from where you are.

What I did was travel the world, start my own businesses(Even small ones it doesn't matter), and basically did what I was passionate about and not what my degree was in(Accounting was one of the two degrees and I'll be damned if I am sitting in a cubicle all day on excel). I came back from travelling with no relevant accounting experience but loads of life experience and was offered 10 jobs within a week. Of course by then the entrepreneurial bug had hit me with the few businesses that I started and went down this route instead.

If I were you I would have started doing volunteer work that you liked with a few hours each day. I am also skilled in a few trades so I did habitat for humanity. When I was in between businesses I taught piano. You see I forgot a lot of the advanced accounting I learned and I graduated only a year and some ago but that doesn't matter because if I were to go back I would have an enormous amount of life experience (When they asked what was a challenge I faced and other slobs were bull****ting their way with retarded minor team disputes I had stories about being in two suicide bombings in Dahab and Tel Aviv and helping out the victims. Ya, that pretty much put me at the top). Besides, most of the knowledge you need will be learned in the workplace.

It's tough because I was depressed to at one time and instead of the doctor/therapist route(Which would have helped), I instead went out and lived the life I wanted to doing things to get by but not working with my degree. It was scary and uncomfortable as hell at first but my god after a few months I did a complete 180 in terms of outlook on life.

Maze, out of curiousity, what type of engineering specifically? What school? Where do you live?

I'm studying mechanical right now at Syracuse; there are different companies here weekly looking to hire engineers of all fields...

Maybe your resume needs work?

Also try doing a search for job fairs in your area, do some research on the involved companies you'd be interested in, ask some intelligent, directed questions, and impress the reps in person.
