S281, modded with a better blower, results in 700 hp. Get that one. Cheap.
Let's say you do this:
Car: $10,000
Engine: $10,000
Paint and body: $5,000
Drivetrain: $5,000
That's for an average mustang or LS1, $30,000.. That's about right for 500 horse hot rod. Thus, my advice, buy something already modded and don't **** around too much.
Then you have cost of ownership. Modded hot rod is something that's to be driven on weekends, and something you'd be fixing for the rest of your life. The more power you have, the more maintenance. I bet you thinking you invest money into car and that's it, it's gonna stay that way for ever. No, it's an ongoing money whole, kind of like a woman.
Thus, cheapest for you is to buy an already modded car at an auction such as eBay, or buy a brand new car, like S281, or vette.
Now, question is, why the **** do you want car with 500 horses or car that looks bad ass? That status of "achievement" is a headache. You'd need to fix her, you'd need to park her so you won't get dented, you need watch so it won't get stolen. Above all you need to put gas into it, and at the end of the week you need to check everything, so it don't stall on you when you need it. **** that.
I suggest you get a regular car. Just a regular stang, or vette. Better yet, get a regular small engine car, like a civic or corolla or something. There is beauty in ****. You can drive it into parking lot, park it next to whoever. If it gets dented, **** it.
500 horse is a lot of power. I only know about Ford. Ford 5.0 motor will not take it. It's not strong enough. Thus as far as Ford goes, you need the new mod motor, 4.6 or 5.4, or the 6.8 V10. Saleen S281 can be made to make 700 horse just with a blower mod.
Stay away from oriental engines and front wheel drive crap.

Yea, and add that VTECh stiker, for extra 50 horses. Just another reason you should stick to factory. You don't know wtf you want.
