OK, let me just go ahead and put this disclaimer on here: This is a rant. I may possibly say offensive things. And, if you're not an American, this likely won't apply to you, although I'm sure you'll find it amusing.

Tell me why I should cater all the "American soldiers" coming home from Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.? Or any other deployment location? Tell me why military service people get discounts on every single thing imaginable? These guys get paid big bucks (likely more than they would in the civilian workforce), get housing allowances, get taken care of everywhere......TO DO THEIR JOB. THEY VOLUNTEER FOR THIS TO BETTER THEMSELVES. THERE HASN'T BEEN A MILITARY DRAFT SINCE VIETNAM.

But for some reason, the troops returning from Vietnam were the ones being spit on because of things they had NOTHING to do with.

Look I'm as patriotic as they come. I love the U.S. and know everything that had to be sacrificed to make the dream a reality. I would have felt much different in WW2, I likely would have been fighting as well. But the military nowadays IS NOT MANDATORY. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GETTING INTO. Most people only go in for the benefits, then cry when they have to get deployed? WHAT THE FVCK.

Sorry, but I'm just tired of the whole chirade. I do not know if I've made my point very clearly or not, but I'd be happy to discuss further. Know this: I am very appreciative of what people do for each other, servicemen included. Combat wounded deserve special treatment. But let's cut the fvcking sh1t....I know many many many people who have been deployed and it's like a temporary vacation. So let's not act like these guys are making the ultimate sacrifice because of some loyalty to all of us......they are getting paid, and handsomely.

Remember, it's not the praising of our military that I'm talking about, it's the sense of entitlement and false "hero" and "the real celebrities" mantra that we get from guys who are just making a living. Most of these guys live pretty darn good lives I must add.......

Paid the big bucks? Oh please. What big bucks are you talking about? Basic Pay? LOL. Combat Pay ($7.50 per day)? The biggest "big buck" item recieved would be the benifit of not paying taxes on income earned during deployment.

But for some reason, the troops returning from Vietnam were the ones being spit on because of things they had NOTHING to do with.

Cause the soldiers in Iraq and Afgan has something to do with these wars? Thats news to me.

Not sure how many people in the military you talk to, but I've not met a single Marine/Sailor/Airmen/Soldier that cried cause they had to get deployed. Im about to go through FMF training here in Camp Lejeune and guess what im going to do afterwards? Im going to put in a request for deployment and I have a 95% chance it will be declined.

Sorry, but I'm just tired of the whole chirade. I do not know if I've made my point very clearly or not, but I'd be happy to discuss further. Its never the servicemen that go around asking for all these chirades and special treatments, its all the dependasauruses (urban dictionary that) and parents/bothers/sisters that are doing 99% of this.

Remember, it's not the praising of our military that I'm talking about, it's the sense of entitlement and false "hero" and "the real celebrities" mantra that we get from guys who are just making a living. Most of these guys live pretty darn good lives I must add.......

Yes, if you mean a pretty darn good life that includes living (with a roommate) in what is marginally larger then a prison cell, having to eat bland @$$ food everyday, being forced to form up every thursday to clean your entire barracks building for HOURS, being FORCED (unless you wan't to go to JAIL, yeah, let that sink into your head for a minute) to come to work no matter how sick you are. I could go on with crap like this ALL DAY.
You may so patriotic it oozes out of every gland in your body, but until you actually know how military members live don't open your trap.

Just a little sidenote on the crap we have to deal with. I just bought a motorcycle, what do you do in the civilian world? Get it registered, insurance, and get a motorcycle license and go on your merry way? In the military you have to do all that aswell, but you also have fill out about 10 pages of ABSOLUTE CRAP, have your bike pass a T-CLOCK inspection REGUARLY, take MANDATORY 4-5 hour rides monthly with basically everyone at your base that also has a bike, and a couple other random stupidness.

Did you also know in the military you have to request permission to get married? You have to take marriage classes before you are allowed to get married.

I know a Marine that was busted down in rank from an E4 to at E2 because he drove his seizing pregnant wife to the hospital instead of cleaning his rifle.

That is just THREE examples of crap military members have to deal with, imagine if I sat here for hours typing up crap we have to do. Im sure theres more military members on this forum that could tell you horror stories.

Wait a second here....what big bucks are you talking about? Do your research man....my brother is currently serving stateside and I calculated his annual base pay at a pitiful $10 hour after tax.

I'm sure officers and higher ranks make decent coin, but lower ranking enlisted troops who do the majority of the grunt work, essentially make retail store wages.

Housing allowance is restricted. Had he not been married he would have had to live in the barracks with the other single men. College is covered, but if you're being deployed forget about ever using it until after you leave active duty. The GI bill is of course the main perk of being in the military, but I feel it a well deserved benefit for giving up your prime years towards serving your country.

There's nothing cushy or glamorous about military lifestyle (at least for those in Marines, Army, and Navy).

Another ignorant inbred American who is a fool for AIPAC and Evangelical nutcases. This is why America is such a joke. You will find more blue-eyed Syrians in Syria than you will find blue-eye Americans (per capita). Thank God for Putin and Russia. If not Americans would be blowing up more places they can't find on a map.

The evil ones in Syria. Assad and his family. Whiter than you or any US soldier. More educated (finest Western schools...Assad is an eye doctor wife was an Investment Banker on Wall Street), better looking, and 100% Syrian. They protect the millions of Christians in Syria. Neocons want to bomb them and kill them.

An entire article that doesn't even tell the whole story.

If you ask why the US wouldn't support such open minded people who allow for all religions to live in peace just look towards Tel Aviv.

Assad is a butcher who murders anyone in his way. That includes civilians, women and children, and foreign aid workers, especially doctors. The only reason he's still in power is that it would hurt Russia financially, and they keep vetoing the UN resolutions against him.

It's a real shame that Russia's economy is so far into the sh!tter that all they can do to make money is sell rifles to Syria. The life expectancy is dropping, the citizens are fleeing, and the beloved Mater Rasha is now just another third world joke.

And America is the only country on the security council that continuously vetoes anything that would go against Israel no matter all the bad things Israel does or internationals law it breaks.

Gee, its almost like the Cold War again, each country backs and protects their own puppet. Assad is a butcher, but wtf do you call Netanyahu?

Back to the actual topic at hand, from what I heard from military people its like most of the time they are safe and relaxing, but the times they have to go into combat it is extremely intense and life threatening. So its kinda like all the stress and burden of a job being put into certain blocks of time while the other time its relatively chill.

Like I said, I was just ranting. And it's typically higher educated Air Force that I'm talking about. But then again, we all know the risk when you decide to join the military.

And Alphaace, you are 100% correct that it's not the servicemen themselves asking for the attention, it's the feel good, out for attention (and usually money) civilians who do that.

The requirement to be intelligent in the Air Force is comparable to the need of being in top shape in the Marines.

Non-existent. There are hardcore badasses in each branch and hardcore brainiacs in each branch. There are even civilian contractors/civil servicemen who are even moreso of either or both that work on base.

For the most part. I got paid just as much on an hourly basis working part-time while I lived with my parents and not having to pay for rent or meals. Plus my parents pretty much let me do whatever as long as I didn't get myself killed or drop out of college.

By contrast, my brother has to work a 40+ week, can be deployed at a moments notice, he is heavily restricted per the UCMJ code plus the day-to-day restrictions placed on him by his base supervisors...all for the same exact pay. Granted serving in the military has its benefits/perks, but its far from the gravy train the OP made it out to be.
