Even justTwo balanced meals a day would blow your diet out of the water in terms of complete nutrition. would'nt you rather have two filling 500 calorie meals then a bunch of tiny snacks here and there??

Potato w/sour creme
you'd actually prefer bubble gum ,a few cans of tuna and cold cuts to the above meals??
In regards to the original post,whey is better for after a workout because it is absorbed instantly ,it's liquid and presigested so to speak,anything solid would need to broken down first through digestion.
