I've just realized that 1 can of tuna contains 2.5 servings, thats 16 grams per serving, comes out to 48 grams of protein in 180 calories and 2.5 grams of fat. Thats better than any protein powder I know of.

Lets take a usual whey protein, in a single serving you get 24 grams of protein 130 calories, and 1.5 grams of fat.

1 can of tuna: 48g protein, 180 calories, 2.5g fat
1 scoop powr: 24g protein, 130 calories, 1.5g fat

Is whey protein powder something better that you can take to bulk up? Is protein from tuna any less of quality when it comes to building muscles?

If you only take 1 scoop of protein after workout, is it any harm to substitude 1 can of tuna after work out?

I just felt a bit hungry because I'm cutting back, ate a can of tuna and it feels alright now! Before today I thought tuna has 16 grams of protein and 1 serving per can.

By no means should you be substituting protein shakes for real foods. The protein shakes will get digested very quickly and won't put the protein to good use.

Only time protein shakes are good are before and after your workout. You only use a protein shake as a last resort instead of a meal if your in a hurry or something. You should be getting all of your protein from real meals.

Taking Shakes won't bulk you the real food will.

plus the type of muscle gained on shakes is bloated muscles and less actualy fiber growth.I remember i used to bloat up on Weight gainers thinking that i was getting huge, but when i got off of them in a matter of a week or soo...i'd shrink! Food puts on solid real weight but true..too many shakes and it just bloats you up!

Theres tons of food out there that has alot of protein..i hate tuna,it smells like dirty vaginas and taste like cat food.I'd rather eat lean ground beef patties with cheese, that's a whopping 30 grams of protein in some cases,60 if you ate two of them.not to mention about 400 calories.

Proper food/calorie combining does wonders- it just takes a carefull eye.

Tuna is my favourite food. It has no carbs, lots of good protein, omega-3 fatty acids, good fats, it's cheap, tastes really good and it's quick to prepare. What more could you want?
I already ate two cans today.

Psh.. what kind of pussies are u eating? It's a common misconception that dirty ones are suppose to smell like fish... actually it's more like chicken, it'll only smell like fish if they have diseases. A normal one shouldn't smell just like a regular d*ck= ORDOR LESS! Tuna is awesome your missing out it's way better than beef more protein and easier to prepare.

Touché.
Although sources on the amount of methylmercury in tuna are mixed, I think the general consensus is that if you're not pregnant or a child, you're okay.

i hate canned tuna,it's mushy and i can't stand the texture of it.But then again, the only one i have eaten is Bumblebee tuna or chicken of the sea, i forget. I haven't tried fresh tuna though.Admitingly beef is hard on my system if i don't eat enough fiber

Wrong. Besides post-workout, pure whey shakes are no good, as you say, because they'll usually be digested very quickly. But to say that the only time shakes should be drank is pre+post-workout isn't true at all. You need to add some fat to your shake, i.e. 3-4 whole eggs, or a tablespoon of olive oil.

Shakes are fine as a meal, and they certainly will contribute towards growth (...a lot)..

I take 1/4 scoop protein before working out, for energy. Then a whole scoop after working out. So far so good, I see more muscle underneath my fat, recovery is faster, and the next work out is easier.

As far as tuna goes, chicken of the sea has 1g less protein per serving, that's 2.5g per can less. But chicken of the sea tastes so much better. Bumblebee has less water in it, and can cause hick ups if you eat it too fast.

With this new calorie per can count, I counted my calories for today to be 1005, roughly.

djSlvt: take more than 1 scoop post-workout. Since your scoops are 24g of protein, try 2.5 scoops post-workout.

djslvt: you are headed down the wrong road with this calorie count and need a total re-think. your body is going to go into starvation mode and it will be very difficult to break out of that. if you keep this up, you will give up eventually and your body will freak when you give it a sane amount of calories, and you'll blimp out again (if you ever lose any bodyfat in the first place).

On that 1000 calorie diet Ive been for a month, and lost almost 10 lbs, went from 34% to 30.5% body fat. Thats while running and lifting weights.

Today I had my 3rd meal, my count totals 1000. I AM STUFFED!!!!

I know people say it should be 3000 calories a day. Maybe I am counting wrong, but 1000 works for me well. a) I AM STUFFED, b) I am loosing weight little by little.

I've eaten 3000 calories a day, and it works for me if I wanted to gain weight. I guess I'm just not active enough, or perhaps I'm doing the counting wrong.

Here is today:

SmartOnes meal
Can of tuna
bubble gum
Crab cake
Two slices of deli meat
A slice of bread
Can of tuna

Thats 1000 calories
280
180
20
60
180
110
180

I am freaking stuffed! It must have something to do with green tea. After I started drinking it I don't eat all day long.

... forgot to include another SmartOnes meal in there, but that would make it 1300 calories, so I am stuffed.

dude, you can eat real foods as opposed to snacks here and there.
Why don't you just eat healthy?
a bowl of steamed veggies,a cup of brown rice and a chicken thigh is about 500-600 calories and will not only fill you up longer but it will provide actual nutrition instead of just something to keep your appetitite down.
Two meals that size and a snack between meals is right about 1200-1300 calories and is more then enough to get you enough nutrition for losing weight the right way.

It works for my body. The other day I drank 12 cans of beer, 260 calories per can. 3000 calories. Subtract 4 cans from that which I drank the day before. So that day I ate 3200 calories. The next day scales showed 2.5 lb gain. My supposed calorie dosage should be 3500.

What I'm doing works for me, no question, I've been taking careful measurements of changes. Muscle loss? Hardly any, I increase weight every 3 work outs.

Maybe my metabolism is screwed up. Maybe I'm not active enough. What I've been doing works for me, and so far so good. But it is not the point of this thread, so another day.

You managed to get to 34.5% bodyfat but you're stuffed on 1000kcal a day?

Your diet is crap. Where are all your vitamins and minerals coming from?

man you are hurting yourself..

first, kiss all your muscle good bye. i bet when you go to lift again you will suck.
no food = muscle goes away.. been there done that no thanks.

second, you are living TODAY. we are telling you that TOMORROW when you start eating food again your body fat levels will JUMP back up. they will explode and you will say "OMFG WTFFFF?!!!!!!" and will come back here crying..

to lose fat you need to speed up metabolism. 6 small meals per day.. i would go as far as saying eating 1800-1900 calories a day is fine, but you MUST have a lot of that in protein, at least 35-40%.

bubble gum? wow.. what a joke!
