Great thread idea!

Something I feel should be mentioned is layering your clothing. When the weather permits, wear multiple layers, it's the staple of a well dressed man.

Great casual look that shows off simple layering for those who aren't comfortable wearing a sport jacket or blazer.

Also, fit is key. If it's baggy it is unflattering to your physique.
Uhh... I will be wearing that this fall. Thanks for that link. Love the outfit.

... without the beanie.

See down here, you wouldn't find any male wearing an outfit like that. However, a lot of my family lives in California and occasionally visit them, and there's many more males that dress in this more "urban" look. To each his own I guess, and it certainly depends on where you live too.

For example, there's quite a few guys that dress like the ones below here in Texas, but you'll see more of this southern style as you enter Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, etc. This is personally my favorite style.

(Not a fan of the shades though)

As you get older, the brighter colors can be substituted with more muted colors, but the general style stays the same. I think it's a great style, but like this thread reinforces, various regions have sharp changes in what is considered fashionable.

You guy need to consider the message you're sending when you wear a suit. When you wear a suit, you tend to fire off the "provider" look, meaning that you will be a good long term mate. Which, in the US, implies that once a woman is finished riding the c*ck carosel, she'll see you as a good choice. And that's fine if you're looking for something long term.

If you want to get more short term affairs, you need to dress edgier and "sexier". A suit isn't edgy. A suit is boring and screams "I will make a great dad and I am stable and will provide for you". A suit also implies that you are a working professional. It'll be very incongruent if your occupation does not require you to wear a suit, and you do it anyway. Then again, it all depends on the type of women you want to attract.

My own personal style is nice designer jeans (Rock & Republic), a pair of Allen Edmonds dress shoes, and a simple black Calvin Klein t-shirt and a watch (D&G Sand Piper in black, or my Seiko Chronograph with black face and steel band and bezel).

You also need to have a good style for going to the beach. Right now the trend is colorful and patterned board shorts, mostly anything from Billabong, Hurley and similar brands. Pretty much wear the same shorts you see professional wakeboarders/surfboarders wearing. None of this dorky white flower pattern on a blue background. And a similar eye catching t-shirt.

I'm happy with my Nautica outlet store. Where I live, just avoiding Wal-Mart puts you in the top 10% of men, fashion-wise.

Where you live should have an impact upon your fashion choices. If it's a big city and there are other similarly dressed guys, then looking expensive and trendy is ok. But if you live in a small town in a red state like I do, and you dress like some of the pictures in this thread, everyone will think you're gay. When they find out you're straight, they'll still think you're a weirdo. It's not fair that people are so ignorant, but neither is life.

Another thing to consider is the 'try hard' factor. You want to look good without looking like you put effort into looking good. Otherwise, it can work against you. Once again, environment is a factor. If you're at a bar in an urban downtown financial district at 5:30 pm, then it's perfectly normal to be wearing a nice suit. But on a small town Saturday night, the same suit will make you look like you're at the bar to pass out Bibles.

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

Sure, let's take it from a 22 year old who probably hasn't worked a day in his life as a professional. I never wore a suit until I was 23.

What he's saying is that for his demographic, it would be a form of "peacocking" to wear a suit. It doesn't make sense to wear one for someone who doesn't need it. There are other outfits the under 25's can rock and still look great

A Gentleman always dresses for the occasion, knowing that he may meet the girl of his dreams at any moment.

A man always dresses. A boy wears the same blue jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers his mother picked out for him when he was two. Nothing screams "momma's boy" more than "edgy" boys' clothes.

bigneil said:
1) Blue Blazer - If you don't have a Navy Blue Blazer, you need to get one immediately. They go with any outfit, from jeans to dress pants. They are also the perfect coat to offer a lady who is cold. The difference with a blazer and sport coat is that blazers are solid colored and have naval-style metal buttons (preferred). A good second option is Hounds tooth. $300

For you newbies, a blazer or sportcoat is strictly "casual." It can't be worn for business, church, or court. That is, unless you're deliberately trying to look like a very poor and ignorant man.

Navy is the first one you should get, but you can't wear it every time you go out. Slowly collect some tweeds for fall/winter and some light cotton or linen jackets for spring/summer.

bigneil said:
2) Wool slacks - You need at least 2 pair that match the coat, meaning different color. Get them fitted, tailored, pleated, cuffed with full-break (if you are tall), and have suspender buttons stitched in. $125 tailored.

Women will feel up your jacket to see if it's cashmere or wool or (eww!) polyester. I never had a woman feel up my pants. Well, not for that reason. Your casual slacks can include cheap, durable, machine washable, off-the-rack rayon, corduroy, etc.

bigneil said:
3) Collared Shirts - You need at least 6 of these, enough to get you through the week, and one for when they are at the dry cleaner (find one that doesn't use chemicals - you should never smell the chemicals on the clothing). Most should not have button-down collars and should have slots on the back to take collar points. Some should have cuff-link cuffs (no button, but extra holes). $70

Dry clean? No. Your shirts are going to be cotton. They're machine washable. A bachelor should learn to use an iron, too.

bigneil said:
5) Suit - You should have 2 suits (matching pants and coat). But if you can only afford one quality suit, spend twice as much for a nice one as they last a lifetime. $600

Wait to buy until you need.

bigneil said:
4) Shoes - You want at least 2 pair because they last exponentially longer if you alternate because they dry out. They should be black and shined regularly. Take care of the shoe shine boy and learn his techniques. $125

6) Watch - Ideally you'll have several, with black and brown leather, and with silver and gold metals. $200

7) Belt - Four are needed with the combinations of brown and black, silver and gold buckles. Some belts are invertible with brown on one side, black on the other. $70

8) Tie - Have at least 5 for a week of business. $50

9) Bow Tie - Have at least 1 and know how to tie one within a minute. Girls go crazy for a bow tie and literally will shout across the room if they see you in one. But watch out because they'll mess it up by tugging on it so that's why you must be able to retie it on the spot. $50

10) Suspender Braces - An alternative to belts, have at least 2 pair with one silver and one gold clasps. They button on, so the pants must have 6 buttons stitched in. Make sure the tailor balances them (they always mess it up) with the belt loops. Get the kind that are either silk or stretchable nylon as women love to snap them. This along with Bow Ties is something that will get nearly universal attention from women. $45

11) Brass Collar Points - These make a huge difference by making your collar perfectly sharp and stiff. The plastic ones bow over time. Be sure to remove these before you go to the dry cleaner. $20

12) Cuff Links - Have at least 2 sets including (4) studs, one in silver and one in gold metal. You can buy fancier ones for the cuffs themselves. You need special shirts that fit them and the cuffs are folded differently than regular cuffs.

Women who know a little about how to dress a man will look to see if he's accessorized...in this order:

1. Tie (optional after business hours). I'm trying to imagine Big Neil going into a sports bar and getting shouted at by a drunk bar skank, while three waitresses in striped shirts run over to untie his bow tie and mess up his hair.

2. Pocket square (optional, can't go wrong with white)

3. Shoes (leather, color goes with jacket: black except brown's also OK for casual with a brown-hued jacket)

4. Belt (matches shoes as closely as possible)

5. Watch (avoid digital and big/divers' watches unless you're deliberately trying to look like a pretender whose ideas of fashion came from the sales lady at JC Penney)

6. Cuff links, tie chain, etc (optional, silver- or gold-colored, must match your watch and metal buttons if any on your blazer)

None of these will ever go out of style. When you are wearing a suit you built that costs $1000 combined, you feel, act, and will be treated like royalty. No wonder women say "The clothes make the man". Remember to never pay retail but do shop at the top mens stores and look for their sales.
This is the point. You can look like a million bucks even if you're unemployed. No one will know the difference. I get treated far better than the boy-men around me just by wearing outlet store "casual" jackets and slacks. Keep your hair and nails groomed, and you're the complete package.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

To me, the best dressed dudes are designers themselves....although most of them are gay, they dress with a very masculine flair.
Check out pictures of Tom Ford or Giorgio Armani.....
My favorite club look is a Black blazer/Suit top with a White dress shirt and Blue Jeans. Sometimes a pocket square. A cool Black Leather belt and Black Chelsea boots. I leave the shirt's top two buttons unbottoned to show off my tan chest (ha ha) and do NOT wear a chain around my neck. I do however use my Silver Tag Heuer Monoco watch. This look is classy and contemporary along with being edgy

Tom Ford did an interview for Vogue a while ago that I remember reading.
He mentioned 15 essentials for a man. Take a look, let me know what you guys agree/disagree with.

1. 'A sense of humor.'
2. 'A daily read of the newspaper.'
3. 'A sport that you love and are good at.'
4. 'Tweezers.'
5. 'A good cologne that becomes a signature.'
6. 'A well cut dark suit.'
7. 'A pair of classic black lace up shoes.'
8. 'A smart blazer.'
9. 'The perfect pair of dark denim jeans.'
10. 'Lots of crisp white cotton shirts.'
11. 'Always new socks and underwear.'
12. 'A classic tuxedo.'
13. 'A beautiful day watch with a metal band.'
14. 'The perfect sunglasses.'
15. 'Perfect teeth - if you don't have them, save up and have them fixed.'

But yeah looking like Brian Westbrook and Dwayne wade in their press confrencess isn't a bad look lol! But c'mon unless your getting hood rats a white tall tee and baggy pants with some Jordan's will do it.

Last night I got 4 compliments on the bow tie.

Unfortunately it was all from black men (including one bum on a park bench).
Nation of Islam isn't recruiting so well these days. Bean pie, anyone?

Vice mentioned Hurley boardies....I'm into water/boardsports and I have yet to find a better boardshort than Hurley Phantoms. They are on the pricey side, but they have this really awesome stretchyness in the right places, dry really fast compared to most, and tend to stay in style for a couple of years out. Cannot reccomend them enough. I like ONeil Superfreaks for the same reason, but in recent years I've found the Hurleys to be my absolute favs.

If you hit surfshops in the fall around the time wetsuit temps hit you can often get great deals taking the bite out of the new cost for the better boardies and be set for next year.

If you really don't care about functionality, you can never go wrong with a solid colored Hurley, ONeil, Quicksilver or Billabong boardie. Don't neglect your beach style for summer.....Anyone who spends any time at one will spot cheeseball tourist and years out of style trunks from a mile away. No need to make things harder on yourself. And you really only need one or two for a whole season. Good bang for buck if you spend a lot if time at the beach or a lake during the summer.

Use a messenger bag instead of a backpack.
Why? Are you a messenger?

Generally speaking, no man should fake. Just wear ordinary men's clothing and use ordinary men's accessories, and that says plenty. But if you did fake, why would you fake being the lowest of the intro level, temp, no-benefit, minimum-wage jobs? Why fake that you're carrying stuff you don't understand for people who don't consider you their peer?

It's the "metro" (read: homosexual) fad to carry messenger bags. Why? As I indicated, it's demeaning. Being a punk is demeaning, so it's understandable that faggot fashion is all about flagging one's self as self-loathing.

Professional men generally transport important papers in brief cases.

Backpacks are very common among high school and college students. Nothing screams "undergrad" like a backpack. Then again, no man should be ashamed of scholarship. It's an accomplishment not a dishonor. In my college days, I used a wheelie backpack and looked like an instructor.
