Too Heavy Weight on Your Bench Press

What would you do if you were benching heavy and it got stuck on your chest?

I learned my lesson today, never add 10+ lbs. if you don't think you can do it.
I was in my basement benching (noone home), loaded 10 lbs., pushed up then back down, holy I was frigging stuck!
I couldn't push it up, I was running out of air. Then I had to literally roll it down.

Yeah it's funny if you look at me but it hurts.

Man you need to be more safe and RTFM or something...

Go back to just the bar and start over... or get a spotter or something...

Actually no, I thought I could do 10 more lbs. but I figured I was depleted of carb AFTER I got it off so stfu about the NOTE.

Or you're the post creator because I'm the thread starter and you created that post? :D

What one friend of mine who worked out alone did was put two chairs on either side of the weight bench, and made them high enough so that they would stop the bar about 1 inch above his chest. That way he could still do his bench inimpeded (if the bar's hitting your chest you're going too far down anyway), but in an emergency he wouldn't be strangled.

BTW has anyone ever heard of someone actually dying from this?

Is this true? I thought bigger range of motion was better, just as long as you aren't using your chest to rest the bar on or to help you lift the weight.

I think I heard something bout possible injury or isnt necessary to do that because your involveing your rotator cuff going to low.

Yup, it was on my local news about a year or two ago. Some kid from Long Island was lifting when no one was in his house and got in over his head. His mom found him dead with the bar crushing his neck (I think it was his neck I dont really remember)
So be careful.

Spotters are definetly recommended, but if you can't find one use DB's instead, they work better for bench anyway.

I had to roll the weight off of me before too.

Be careful with the heavy bench, I recently hurt my shoulder doing it.

I'm going to dummbell pressing as others as suggested again.

I'm in the "Roll it over my stomach" club as well!


What I recommend is using smaller weights lkie 2.5 or 5 pounds.

Whenever I'm stuck, I quickly try to sit up throwing the bar forward and switch my hand grip into the curl postion so that I can now hold the bar and get it off my lap.

As you can tell, I don't have a spotter at my house either!
