What if he buys a LP right away. He might damage it easily or might find out he sucks at music or he doesn't even like playing the guitar. A new LP usually goes for 1.9-2.3k (Standard), that's not cheap either.

By the way you don't need to take classes. Just learn musical theory, your scales, and your chords and you can build off of that. PM me if you want some good resources.
So he should just mess up a Strat? Don't get me wrong, I like both Gibson and Fender and your point is valid but he could spend the same amount for a "good" Strat if not more (like the Stevie Ray Vaughan "Lenny" Strat) as opposed to one of those Strats which are made in Japan. He could always pick up a respectable Ibanez for under $400.

Yeah, Ibanez and fender stratocasters make good starter guitars. Don't go with something costly, wait a few years until you get an idea of what kind of a guitar you want.

I started with an Ibanez RG 220 plugged into a B52 cab, but now I have my Gibson Explorer and I can't ask for anything better.

What kind of gear you guys have? What kind of music you really dig? Got any songs to share?
I own a Fender Strat(Mexican) with a Fender amp, and use a MetalMaster Pedal. I play black/death metal(death metal riffs, with black metal vocals).

Bands I'm into include: Gorgoroth, Enslaved, Mayhem, Carpathian Forest, Goatwh*re, Satyricon, Dimmu Borgir(their old stuff), Emperor, Burzum, Bathory, Darkthrone, etc. etc. Even some power metal like Edguy, Rhapsody, etc.

Love the Clapton reference, he's also my favorite musician.

I'm a bluesy rock / classic rock guy, but very much just a casual player. All my free time goes to playing, but that's not really all that much. I have a Fender Strat and an acoustic/electric Ovation. I don't plan on starting a band in the immediate future so didn't want to go overboard.

Cracking out some Tears in Heaven or Layla with the ladies seems to work pretty damn well.

So I know this is an old thread...but I thought it was better than starting up a new thread.

I'm interested in learning to play the guitar. I'm into literally every type of rock possible...I prefer Metal, Hard-Rock, and Alternative however. My question is this...what kinda of guitar should I look to start out on? I want a decent quality/brand that won't get me made fun of for having lol, but yet something that won't break my bank. Any suggestions or recommendations from veteran guitar players?

If you want to learn just buy a cheap/used guitar. You want your first guitar to be something you can fvck around with and not care it it gets messed up. Look at the Yamaha or Squire Strats. You could probably get a used setup (practice amp and guitar) for 50-100 bucks. People won't make fun of you about the guitar you play, they'll make fun of you if you can't play or hold a tune, so don't worry about the guitar just yet. You may end up finding out that you don't like playing guitar.

The guitar can be cheap but if it has good action and you have a good amp and effects it sounds great.

Literally my Fender Hot rod deville tube amp sounds awesmoe with a 99$ fender squier cheapo guitar.

That being said, I will get a Paul Reed Smith and have deprived myself for years of it. They are great sounding and play very easily.

My Alvarez Acoustic if tough to play but sounds great on the other hand. Dreadnought acoustics take alot of finger strength.
