Make sense enough that one should only go to college for intellectual curiosity and/or practical need for a field. Just that, a lot aren't doing anything practical and few are that passionate about the non-practical one.
Though, thinking a bit more, your musician friends are very talented, but do you solidly believe they could cut it as musicians? It is just that there are lots of musicians out there, a friend of mine knows a band that is incredibly passionate and manage to pick up a small fan following. However, they still struggle to makes ends meet and only recently got signed after like 10 years and still making very little progress. Though, your musician friends aren't making much progress taking the college path either as musicians at least.
