It was conseived and tested during World War 2, when Hitler was still alive, and went into production in 1946, and it is still considered best weapon around. It's modernization for smaller cartridge, AK-74 is just as accurate as the praised, but often jammed, american analog.

Today there is even better modernizations of this great weapon, although AK-74 is still main weapon of Russian army, there are two featuristic weapons that are better.

First one is АЕК-971, gun was designed in 1978 in ЗиД Kirov city, Vladimir state, under direction of Станислав Иванович Кокшаров. This gun is capable of shooting extrimility accure on full auto. You can literally draw a perfect smily face with bullets. This gun is superior to any other gun in the world when it comes to accuracy, especially on full auto. Inside it has a system of weights that balance lateral and parallel forces generated when a bullet is fired, which means that there is no recoil. AIK 971 wasn't taken as main army weapons by Russian army because it was considered to be too complex. https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/АЕК-971

Second one is АН-94, gun was designed in 1994 by Геннадй Никонов. When fired in semi auto this gun fires two bullets at once. This is made so that there is a greater chance penetrating armor. Gun performs great from any shooting position and is currently adopted as main battle weapon of Russian army, full switch over to it should happen by 2018. https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/АН-94

The best revolver ever made is the Korth Combat Revolver.

No S&W or Colt is even remotely comparable. Of course, a Korth will set you back six grand or more, but in this case, you get what you pay for.
Maybe it's the best custom, but the Colt Python was the best mass produced and affordable ~$1000 revolver every made. The Python was almost custom level and assembled and finessed by expert gunsmiths on a production line. Even the more affordable Colt King Cobra I had was so nice, I couldn't imagine most people really needing anything better than Python or would better even be noticeable.

The thing of it is the Colt Python's fundamental action design had over a 100 years heritage and was proven as an Army/Navy service weapon. It's held in high esteem by most. I consider Colt revolvers the best at any reasonable price. I doubt revolvers like the Python will ever be made again at that price range.

Python wasn't really a mass produced gun. It required a lot of hand fitting and was too expensive to produce for a "mainstream" gun, which is why it was discontinued. Although the Python is a very nice revolver, the timing mechanism is the weak link. Those guns are known for going out of timing if shot consistently with full-power .357 mag rounds.

The python was mass produced and affordable the way it was done before when skilled assembly workers did a lot of hand assembly and fitting of parts. The python just got more attention to detail. The python has a complex action like a mechanical watch and it's true it could need retiming eventually. It's kind of like an old ferrari. That's where a king cobra would be good if you wanted something simpler and more reliable that was still nicely finished. That's where I think S&W came short. It needed some custom work too feel as nice as a king cobra or python but then you'd be at a price higher than a python.
