The news is trying to tell me how to think about subjects.

I've been noticing recently that the mainstream media deliberately peppers in works like "chilling" and "horrifying" into their headlines. Same thing with audio/visual newcasts: they pepper in these emotionally-laden words.

It's almost like they're doing the thinking for me.

I remember seeing a newspaper headline depicting a toddler playing with a handgun, and that the photo was "chilling". I didn't understand why; in my Russian/Ukrainian culture, children playing with weapons and firearms was considered normal. Then I learned the context of the photo and the story behind it, but nonetheless I didn't find the photo "chilling".

Good thing other people do the thinking for me in the USA!

I heard someone describe the news as a hypnotic and highly persuasive cult, and I couldn't agree more.

Some years ago I started to notice the news was playing on my mind for most of my days. I was constantly angry and bitter towards everyone and everything, I viewed so many guys as potential threats, I'd feel on edge about the wars breaking out and the constant fear mongering of terrorism and killer viruses.

Then one day I though about it. I've never been threatened or even insulted by anyone from Iraq or Afghanistan. The only people I personally know who have been hurt by "terrorists" are the soldiers who have gone into those countries. I have never known anyone catch one of these contagious diseases (swine, flu, mad cow disease, sars etc) and I also realise that everything that is wrong with the world is totally out of my hands anyway, so why worry about it?

I was involved in a tragic incident a couple of years ago and then I read the newspaper report the next day and they literally made up the details themselves! They interviewed people who weren't even at the scene, they never acknowledged those of us who tried to help and totally speculated on what had happened.

It makes me cringe when people talk about the news as though it's a fact and get so worked up about issues that they've never had any contact with at all.

I refuse to watch the news or read the papers now. I just focus on my own life and I can't explain how much of a relief I've felt since then.

It's ironic how westerners mock the propaganda in middle eastern countries and North Korea and yet they remain oblivious to all the propganda they're being fed on a daily basis.

This is nothing new, media has been doing it ever since its invention. I watch the Daily Show for my news, if he talks about something i care about then i research it myself.

I work in local tv news. If it bleeds it leads. If you can scare, they stay right there. And never think they will give you anything close to a real story. Just enough to fill up the segment and on to the next one. 99% of reporters in tv news are just pretty faced talking heads. It's not even overtly evil. It's selling a product. The product is you. We sell your eyeballs to advertisers for money. It's the same way google and facebook works. You watching is what pays my bills. So whatever we have to say to keep you watching is what we will say. We use words like chilling and horrifying because you will stay in your sit watching when we use those words. If we said pleasant and happy you would be on to the next channel. We give you want you want. How do we know you want it? You keep watching. It's the circus part of bread and circuses.

Amen. Next time you hear about the latest "epidemic" (e.g. SARS, Hoof in Mouth, West Nile, etc.) go to the CDC's website and read the statistics. At the height of the SARS "epidemic" some 700 people were infected - worldwide. By the time the story hit the mainstream the disease had been more or less contained in Asia. Yet over and over we heard the word "epidemic." The Black Plague was an epidemic.

Also, ask yourself seriously: Does this story affect me? Is it real news, or just voyeuristic news? A murder or a kidnapping is a sad thing indeed. Does it affect you directly? Perhaps there is a serial killer on the loose in your hometown. That affects you - you will keep an eye out. But a random murder between loved ones, or a bank robbery on the other side of town - is it there to sell soap or is it helping you? Or just terrifying you?

Yup. My parents cannot understand how I work at tv station and never watch the news. I told them that they are the ones moaning everyday about how the world is going to hell and upset every night before going to bed over **** that doesn't even matter. They didn't get it. So I told them this... I'm like the guy at McDonalds who knows whats in the food and how it's made and refuses to eat there.
