Master Don Juan
I was talking to a woman friend (yeah she's a prospect) the other day and she told me something that made me pause and really consider it. She said that you can tell a lot about a man by the type of woman he dates. I always knew this about women but I hadn't considered that it holds true for us guys too.
We've all heard about guys who had trophy wives; basically men with tons of money and nothing else; they attach themselves to HBs that are usually gold diggers without much going for them to use as arm candy. We usually didn't think very highly of those men buy man, did we really appreciate their beautiful wives!
But things have changed with the times. Believe it or not trophy wives have spawned a new category of arm candy; Alpha Women. These are the non-man hating feminist that we'd actually want to date! They have their own high paying careers and are usually leaders in their field. They are highly educated and self assured. They also tend to intimidate the typical male that has old fashioned values and ideas of gender roles.
According to a recent Match.com poll, 48 percent of men (and an equal percentage of women) report dating partners who draw the same income they do. Twenty percent of men report dating women who earn more. I myself have been on a run of meeting highly paid women who are VPs, MDs, PhDs as well as Double-Ds! (haha). But seriously, my buds all ask me if I am intimidated by their credentials. "Well not until you brought it up!!!" But actually I'm one of the lucky guys who's always had an affinity for well read, intellectual women.
Men’s attraction to professionally achieving mates is one piece of a much larger story. We’re experiencing a historic change in the things people want out of a partner. Men in their 20s and 30s embarking on first marriages are relieved to no longer be the sole breadwinner and decision-maker, a burden many watched their fathers shoulder. Here's something to consider; are we possibly redefining masculinity???!!!
It's not only medium income men that want to have second marriages—and affairs—with alpha women, older wealthy men seems to be gravitating to alpha women too. Older men now want the most impressive achiever in the office. In the eyes of a mens peers, the woman with the career and degrees counts for more than Miss America! It seems as if status is attached to a woman who is successful, not to a woman with a perfectly pear-shaped @ss!
So here's my question for you to consider; do you have a preference between choosing a partner with traditional gender values or one that is more progressive and can hold her own?
