I was recently talking to my friend recently about looks and what guys go for. She thinks that most men prefer curvacious women, whilst I think they go for the skinny model look. So I pointed out that skinny women get checked out the most, she said that is because they have beautiful faces and give out an air of confidence. But I think men are more body orientated than face, and with women its vice versa.

Now I'm not saying that men do not like curvacious women, it's just that the ideal look is to be very slim. However I do sometimes see very handsome guys with curvacious women who have pretty faces, and sometimes see them with average looking women (rarely ugly).

So I think men prefer the skinny look, even though many say curvacious. Otherwise why is the skinny look the ideal?

When you say curvaceous, do you mean fat? When I use the word curves, I'm talking about Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, young Anne Nicole Smith.

The answer to this is not simple. All guys have different tastes, but if you are after generalizations, I will try my best...

Ever read the book "Soul on Ice" by Eldridge Cleaver? Basically Mr. Cleaver is a convicted rapist who goes to jail and completely reforms himself and ends up writing some fascinating literature about his experiences, black vs. white culture, etc. One of the point he touches upon is the how modern culture as over-feminized the female to compensate for a new generation of feminine males. He explains how African culture idealizes the voluptuous female form because the males are VERY masculine. Even in modern society, the majority of black males are often blue-collar workers and are physically fit. However, the white collar dudes, primarily white boys, are sitting at their desks all day becoming physically inferior (fatter/scrawnier) So this culture has to make its females even more weak and emaciated in order to assert its dominance. Basically, weak men need weaker women to make them feel strong and this mindset has taken over popular culture to the point that all girls want to look like they are starving. It is sad how many ladies I know were once bulimic/anorexic. These poor girls were victims of propaganda generated by weak fools. I don't agree with all Mr. Cleaver says and I hate using racial terms to illuminate my perspective, but he makes some valid points.

The truth is that most guys I know prefer a balance. They go gaga over a slim woman WITH curves. A nice mix of healthy/fit and voluptuous, soft goodness. I personally agree with Sir Mix-A-Lot. After looking at a woman's face, I always scope her out to see if she has back. ;) In fact, sometimes I will pursue a girl with a not-so-pretty face if the booty is tantalizing enough. But hey..that's just me.

Overall, this is a great question. It will be interesting to see how the other guys respond to this.

BTW - Whats YOUR ideal body type? What kind of man makes you salivate with desire at the very sight of him?

A woman who is basically physically fit, yet without being shapelessly unfeminine in the process, is what rings most men's bell, IMO. Long distance runners are too skinny. Sprinters are too bulky and unwomanly. And why any woman wants to be a body-builder is beyond me. The key is a feminine look; the best babes have the best of every physically desirable attribute a woman could have, e.g., clear skin, delicious hair (not cropped short like a man's), toned legs, and so on. But it's all to no avail if she is an inaccessible, unapproachable, aloof narcissus.

Don't always be the one putting yourself out for her. Don't always be the one putting all the effort and work into the relationship. Let her, and expect her, to treat you as well as you treat her, and to improve the quality of your life.

Im more of a face person. Maybe its because you can do something about your body but not with your face (except plastic surgery) When I first see a woman its the face I check out first. Then the thighs, since this is where women tend to store their fat.

Interesting theory Mr Fingers. No curvacious does not mean fat, it is inbetween being very slim and vultropus (spelt it wrong).

My ideal man is Ethan Hawke. Tall (must be at least a few inches taller than me), slim boyish figure and strong jawline. Don't go for the muscle man look. If a guy is slim and has slight bisceps than it is okay, but not essential. Athletic build is my second favourite

Here's something interesting Mystery Woman: A few years ago, anytime a guy would mention an ugly woman that he was attracted to, the same name would always come up. Sandra Bernhard. She had a good body and was really confident. She just had a lot of sex appeal despite having an unattractive face. She went on the Arsenio Hall show wearing a see through body stocking with a g-string underneath. She would then turn around and bend over to show off her back side. Damn, I wish I had that on tape.

How many women do you see with toned arms and legs...and a defined abs. I'm not just talking about slim chicks. VERY few women are fit enough that you don't have to ask whether or not they work out. That's if you're looking at women with a Personal Trainer's eyes.
Guys who aren't serious about fitness may look at a slender woman with no muscle tone at all (the swimmer figure) and say she's got the greatest physique out there.
Then...there are those guys that like the big beautiful woman (BBW). Hey....to each his own.

Find what fits YOU!

The ideal body is DIFFERENT from woman to woman. Some girls carry thier fat WELL (they have alot of estrogen and the fat collects where it is good to have fat.) These girls are better off to be more "curvatious" or whatever. (Not overweight though, that is ALWAYS gross.)

Some girls do NOT carry thier fat well. (It collects in thier face as well as everyplace where it may NOT be so good to have fat.) Once the fat collects in your face, it is all over. These girls would be better off to be a bit skinnier and toned. Then, while they would not be at an IDEAL shape, they would at least be able to be healthy and possibly sexy (since they got rid of the "fat-face".)

Many girls think that they need to get closer to that ONE IDEAL. This is ABSOLUTELY WRONG!!! Half of the "attractiveness" comes from one person's "ideal" girl, half of it comes from the other person and how close they are to thier OWN ideal.

Example:

Let's take a famous person that has changed thier hair color and thier figure, how 'bout Brittany Murphy.

Now, MY personal preferences include black hair. I don't really care for blondes, and the lighter the blonde hair you have the more I hate you! ;)

But, after looking at some of the pictures, it is so obvious (to me) that this girl's ideal look is to have blonde hair:

I give this a 6: Black hair, fat face.

I give this a 7: Black hair, thin.

This one is also a 6: Black hair, round face.

NOW, let us look at the pictures when she is blonde. (Or dark blonde, which is fine by me!)

This one is an 8: Blonde, make uped.

About an 7.5: Blonde.

This girl went from disgusting to pretty cute just by changing her "face-fat" level and her hair color! Whatever body she has with her good face is the one that she has to live with.

Besides, many things that have a BIG impact on the body cannot be changed. Like wide hips for women and broad shoulders for men. I LOVE wide hips (hip BONES not wide from fat!)

Also, skin makes a BIG difference. If it is slightly dark and smooth, that in ITSELF can make you hot.

But the girls that get checked out are the ones that take care of thier entire appearance. They make sure they are at an optimum. Doesn't matter if they are skinny or curvatious. Mostly, it has to do with how much skin they show, make up, colors, and thier skin tone/smoothness.

Blah, blah, blah...I've written too much already! :D

It doesn't matter how good-looking you are, how romantic you are, how funny you are... or anything else. If she doesn't have something INVESTED in you and the relationship, preferably quite a LOT invested, she'll dump you, without even the slightest hesitation, as soon as someone a little more "interesting" comes along.

I'm a tall and skinny guy, not to mention handsome, and therefore is not surprise I like my women skinny, although shorter than me. Even though I used to be very much a breast man, I now like small to medium breasts, so long her breasts are larger than mine. ;) Body size does have impact on breast size, as I have noticed skinny women with large breasts are naturally large women who simply keep themselves thin, but commonly given enough age will blow up like the damn Michelin tire man when they decide to finally let themselves go.
She thinks that most men prefer curvacious women, whilst I think they go for the skinny model look.
You are right but, naturally, so long it's not the heroin chic look. Most guys, like myself, find anorexia a tremendous turn off.
But I think men are more body orientated than face, and with women its vice versa.
A great face can make up for an alright body, but a great body can not make up for an alright face.
My ideal man is Ethan Hawke.
Of curiousity, what do you think of a Bruce Willis face (and head) with an Ethan Hawke body? :D

Icepick, you are the reason why we can't use a universal scale from 1-10. You are the only guy I've ever heard say Brittany Murphy is cute. I think she was better when she had more weight on her face. She's weird looking now, she looks like a skinny pig. On my scale, I would give Brittany Murphy a 3 or maybe a 4 at the most.

Yes! Exactly. But you will still hear most people complain about looks.

I remeber seeing the previews for that movie that she was in with Kelso from the 70s show, and I was like "Wow! A new hot actress!" (Although on the site that I linked to above, all of those Maxim pictures are horrible!)

Looks are not really universal, only things like "symmetry" and "healthy looking" are. Symmetry (and other things like it) just means photogenic, and that some people are more dependent on "lighting" than others.

But really, it all comes down to individual preferences.

BTW 3 or 4 is harsh! I reserve those spots for the girls that are fat. I think the slim ugly girls should at least get a 5 or 6. (Even though 5, 6 in my book means "heeeell no".) :)

For me, it's the face first and then the body I look at. If her face resembles Barbra Steisand or Rhea Pearlman, I flee from her as quickly as I can.

I look at her face and my brain will automatically tell me whether she's worth going for. If she has sparkling eyes, a wide sincere smile (that says "I like you") and she's got a pleasant personality, I am very interested. If her body weight is not more than 20 pounds overweight, she's in my stable.

I don't go for skinny model look.
I mean those cloth models who look like skeletons wrapped with skin.
If a woman has no visible fat, no sausages when she puts her tight jeans on, I'd go for her.

Hey, everything that is EXTREME isn't good. extreamly skinny, fat, much makeup, too big, too little... it's about balance.

If a body of a woman looks sexy, it is curvy. It's feminine.

Guys like pretty much the same that girls do...
not too skinny. Imagine a skinny bastard.
not too fat. Imagine a beer belly.
not too athletic/muscular. They doesn't just look humans anymore.
same goes for bodyhair etc.

Personally, I don't prefer body so much. The face is more important. It is the part you have to see whole time (or you just have to use a paper bad and go doggy style.. j/k). i.e. good boobs you can grab are just a bonus, not a general critera.

Things that make us masculine attract women. Things that make you women feminine attract us guys. That's it.

You said "the ideal look is to be very slim", I say that it is just slim. Girls who really eat healthy and go for sports, are generally good looking to men. There is no fat women who eat healthy and go for sports themselves.

But I still say what you already said:
It's eye of the beholder.

I'm such a snob when it comes to looks... I find I'm attracted to noticeably fewer girls than my friends.

Here's what I go for:
Blonde hair, blue eyes, around 5'8, well maintained, not skinny freak style but probably not 'curvaceous' either.

I hate the type of girl I go for. It's so stereotypical.

Okay, these word could have come out from my mouth too...

Create self-fulfilling prophecies. Always assume the positive. Assume she likes you. Assume she wants to talk to you. Assume she wants to go out with you. When you think positive, positive things happen.
