Just wanted to tell you guys something that I have noticed over the years. I hope you consider it a small contribution to the forum. This applies to most of the GF's I have had as well as my 1st and current wife. I'm the kinda guy who usually has a "project" in the works. Something like installing a garage door opener, refinishing a piece of furniture, hobbies, fixing all kinds of things. Get it? I'm pretty handy around the house. When I am involved in a project, and there is a female around, they cannot help but wonder "why is he concentrating ON THAT"? I KNOW they are thinking "It's over here, between my legs"! Doesnt he notice my designer jeans and heels"? When you have other interests other than the chick, and you engage those interests in her presence, her interest level WILL rise. Plus, women like guys who are handy. It's a turn on for them. It also shows your independence and that you are not lazy. You can take care of yourself. Now here is the key. Let yer girl see you do these things while she is around. The part you have to watch out for is taking it too far to the point where she loses interest altogether and might bail. You have to give her just enough attention to where she is fully aware THAT YOU KNOW, she is there. Don't ignore her completely. And heck, even if she does just bail, you still have a nice new garage door opener! This has really worked for me for many years and still does to this day. Food for thought fellas.

It's a turn-on for them because they know that if they can get you to marry them, they can spend the next couple decades with a private contractor who will not only renovate every room in her house precisely to her liking, he will ALSO work for free, pay for all materials, and even pay for the house ITSELF. :p

Having a passion will always be a turn on. And although it does apply to being a handyman, it could also apply to music, art, politics. Anything.

I like girls with passions. Girls like guys with passions. It's attractive to see that a person cares about something and isn't just sitting around sucking up oxygen for 80 years.

Good post.

I was preaching the exact same thing around here a few years ago. I didn't think anyone really paid attention to my advice though.

Knowing how to do "stuff" really is an attractive quality. I happen to be one of those guys who knows how to do a lot of different things. I've learned a ton of stuff from my dad (the ultimate Jack of all trades), my work, and from books.

I can't tell you how many times I've received comments from women saying how great it is that I know how to do __________.

Just last night I took a group of friends out on my boat for an evening cruise. On the way back I had a small engine problem which required me to remove the cover and pull out some tools. After I had us back on our way one of the girls onboard mentioned that she wished she had a boat. I said why don't you and your BF buy one? She says right in front of her boyfriend, "Because if we broke down out here he wouldn't know how to do anything but scream help!" Everyone laughed.

Almost all of my guy friends are pretty much useless when it comes to taking care of themselves and their stuff. I can't imagine how helpless I would feel having to call some other dude to come fix my sh!t all the time. Especially in front of my woman. No wonder we hear stories about women cheating on their husbands with the repair man. :)

Here is another example. Tomorrow night, I have been asked to sit in with a bluegrass band during a live show at a local pub. Gonna take the wife. When I get up there and play a couple tunes, she'll be sitting in the audience listening with our friends. I'll just bet it impresses her when she hears me pickin my (5string) banjo. She has never heard me play in a band although I did for many years awhile back. She won't be the center of attention all night. Only part of it. See what I mean? Her interest level will most likely rise. She'll see yet again, that there are other things that matter to me other than that cute little butt and pair of 38's.

This OP is very true.

A couple years ago it was the 4th of July. I was with my fairly new girlfriend and we were about to take a boat ride over to the local amusement park to anchor there, hang out, and watch the fireworks once it got dark.

I tested the lights before leaving port, and I noticed that the bow light wasn't working. Of course, I couldn't go out without a bow light (it's a green and red light which tells other boats which direction you're travelling at night), and after trying to bypass the switch I saw that it still wasn't working. That meant a corroded connection somewhere, and time was ticking away. I pulled out a roll of wire, pulled off the battery cover and completely rewired the light from bow to stern, with her just watching. Finally I lit up the light, gave here a sly smile, and off we went. She was absolutely amazed by that display of prowess and know-how.

She talked about it for months with friends and relatives. My theory is that women are immensely attracted to a man who displays mastery over physical things (because they lack this), and also the laser-like concentration that they simply don't have.

Next time you have some kind of project going on, manipulate things so that she's present and observe her reaction. If she observes you concentrating on the job at hand and working with a sense of mastery and confidence, her heart will go pitter-patter. When we do this we are displaying qualities that they completely lack, and this always builds attraction. They are face-to-face with raw masculinity.

Nothing makes me sicker than to hear a man say, "I wouldn't know what to do with a hammer" or something similar. And a woman will feel the same way. To display mechanical mastery via a project is to completely circumvent social contrivances and is a direct line to attraction.

I will have to think about how I can further use this to my advantage. I had forgotten about this dynamic but now my wheels are turning...

Unfortunately most younger men have lacked a father's leadership. Back in the day, physical skills and mastery over the real world were passed on from father to son as a matter of course, many times by just watching how Dad did it.
How many of you Gen Y's can use a Black and Decker, rewire that broken light fitting, fix that dripping shower, diagnose a bad auto battery/alternator, tie a fish hook or a fly , or know what ammo to buy ?

However I bet most all of you know how to click a mouse. Taking your laptop with you isn't gonna land a fish for dinner.

Black and Decker check
rewire broken light fitting check
dripping shower check
diagnose a bad auto battery/alternator check
tie a fish hook or a fly check

I learned most of this by taking a one semester "principles of engineering" class and my dad took me fishing when I was younger. All my other friends took a BS tech class where they got 90's for doing nothing but learning nothing also. I can also work with engines, refrigerators and air conditioners. I think that's what the women see when they see a handy man. A man who can engineer or rather shape the world to his desire without being dependent on another person.

Your last sentence says it.

Create self-fulfilling prophecies. Always assume the positive. Assume she likes you. Assume she wants to talk to you. Assume she wants to go out with you. When you think positive, positive things happen.

From New Orleans, Louisiana to Atlanta, Georgia!!!
Women love it when they see a man washing or fixing his car. Or if they fix another woman's car like it's another day in the life.

I remember an administrative assistant at my university who was much older and mature (I was a freshman at age 18) and I just got out of class and she came by in a shiny red Lexus and caught a flat. I went in and fixed it quite easily and then I went under the hood for the fuse box. I was digging for a while and I noticed that she was checking me out as I was bent over! I'll say, she had a lot of time before I looked up, and she made every second count! After I fixed it, she got all hugged up on me!

Later times we saw each other, she smiled at me more, and wore clothes that were sexier. When we first met, she wore dress pants and flats. Later times, she brought out the claws and wore shorter dresses and heels while being classy/sexy and workplace appropriate! Even one time, we saw each other for the first time in a while and she stayed mighty close to me and told her co-workers and sorors about how i fixed her car. Then she asked me to marry her, after she scratched me and kissed me! (BTW this was a married-ass cougar who wasn't getting enough love from her ugly ass hubby!) Then she told me that she was old enough to be my momma and her hubby might not approve. Her sorors wasn't approving of a romance between us either, so they started trying to get closer, since I was pimping out my ride every week.

When I was delivering pizzas in New Orleans, my job was next door to a cash services place. I went out and cleaned out my car when business was quiet, and I heard a girl's voice say "I guess I'm next right?" I didn't look back and the girl came by right when I finished a short while after and she was oh so fine! I got to know her more and then a few days later I went by her crib and hit it!

In Lithonia, I washed my truck and my neighbor across the street was checking me out. She opened up to me until her hubby came outside. No harm done, as she hooked me up with a date with her daughter.

It's amazing what can happen when you clean your ride or install something outside of your house where people can see it. Be seen! That's my ruling!

Case closed. I want to hear more stories like these!

If you have a girl who likes banjos and fiddles she is definitely a keeper.

I remember being a little tyke and my dad would take a piece of 2X4, start a few nails into it, and give me a hammer to hammer them in. He would be able to work on his project while I was busy hammering those nails in order to make him proud of me. Of course, I would be sure to grunt just like I heard him doing when he exerted himself.

I'm actually the descendent of probably the most famous and prolific amusement ride creator who ever lived. I really do think this stuff runs in the blood, although of course environment and exposure can equally round out a man in terms of mechanical know-how. When I was little, before I even knew I was a descendent of this man, I would create all sorts of elaborate amusement park rides out of cardboard, popsickle sticks, wood, glue and motors. I really do wish I had entered the amusement industry perhaps as an engineer.

Sorry for indulging down memory lane there. Back to the subject at hand, girls place an enormously high value on a man's "fix-it" ability, and I think there are few things that can turn her on more than watching a man work on a project of some kind.

If you want to impress her beyond measure, find something that is broken in her house or apt and fix it. You will practically see little hearts flying out of her head like you see in cartoons. Like I said, it's a direct line in. The power of this is enormous.

Great post 5string, right on the money. Women love to see men doing physical work, and fixing things. They just do, it means the man is 'capable', he's a man of action, strength.

My job is an example of this, I get catcalls from women often, whistles, and occasionally the flashing of a topside. :D It's because my job involves lot's of heavy machinery, big powerful tools, and lifting/moving large objects. Women love guys who wear hardhats. Well, they at least enjoy watching them work.

Anytime you fix something, build something, even break something on a big level...the gal's love it.

Great post, and responses in this thread.

As a younger man, with friends my own age, I agree this is exactly the problem.

I also think it's a problem with the younger guys.

My dad taught me a fair amount of stuff, but half the time when i was a kid I just wasn't interested in learning to fix things. Now I've re-learned a lot of this and taught myself how to fix basic things around the house, and as a grown man there is pride in being able to do things like fix that shower head or caulk the bathtub. You dont need to be able to rebuild an engine but crap as a man you should be able to do some damn handywork. I now see the value in all that stuff my dad showed and frankly wish I wasn't so interested in superheroes and video games. Better late than never I guess.

I have to agree.

My father taught me many-a-things.
And in this day and age, even being able to tie your own tie, will impress a woman, let alone fix SOMETHING.

Now I know JACK about cars, but I've seen enough to know how to fix a flat tire or how to some "liquid" into the low port of the A/C. People look at me like I am some kind of genius.

I put together desks, fixed all sorts of electronics, and appliances.

It's like you are a God amongst men when you can do all of these things. I wish the kids nowadays would pick this up, but I think this is the male version of "cooking". Women don't know how to cook anymore, men don't know how to be handymen anymore.

Modern technology has made it too convinient to replace anything broken or to have it conviniently fixed by someone else for a "moderate" fee. Not me, if I think I can fix it and not die in the process, I will, regardless of whether I impress anyone or not.

But if fixing my sink by myself amazes anyone, then that says a LOT about our current society.

Dear 5String,
Aah yes Women love work, they could watch it all day....I once ran a building firm with my Dad...when a Woman finds a Man who can create her dreams she is like a dog with two tails....I often had a chance to develop things with these ladies, but Business generally came first....Should be a Rollo Maxim...Never get your gravy where you are getting your meat...later in life I remember one Lady friend, whose Garden I helped her Landscape, maybe we saved her $15 to $20,000 she was probably a 9 to my 8 I enjoyed her favours as a result of her gratitude for years....pulling together at the yoke, does bond and guarantee a good time....Is it worth it?I am not sure but even when the charm goes you will always have your Black and Decker.
