Hi,

I'm considering getting surgery to stop sweating under my armpits and feet, but am concerned about possible side effects.

Does anyone know about the cons for this?

I've exhausted what I think are all possiblities -I've used all sorts of products (incl Driclor) and none work. my confidence is gradually getting worse and worse, and I see myself shrinking away from any social situation.

So, possible cons please.

Thanks.

If its the smell that is bothering you look into deodrant crystals i think they are called. Supposedly they are really cheap and keep you from smelling where ever you put it.

Surgery for sweating sounds extreme...are you a big guy? Maybe losing weight would help or drinking cold water to keep your body refreshed

i've tried antiperspirents, i've tried the crystal deoderants, and they dont work effectively for me- they reduce the problem a little, but my paranoia and constant thinking and worrying about it is driving me nuts

I believe he's referring to chronic hyperhydrosis... I get it in my hands, especially when adrenaline is going. I barely notice it anymore because I treat it effectively. Every night, before bed, I wipe my hands with antiperspirant. The whole next day my hands are fine.

Perhaps take a stick of antiperspirant(do not confuse with deodorant), and wipe the affected area before bed. Monitor the results the next day.

If that doesn't work then sure, consider surgery. Just know that surgery to alter the nervous system is very dangerous and not to be taken lightly.

I've heard this can cause problems for some people. CBC or BBC Report I think.

Do plenty of research first. Lots of problems & side effects.

If it's your mind that's causing you to sweat, then forget the surgery and get your thought process fixed. Cognitive therapy would do you wonders. Look into it. Your thought process is all fvcked up. You need to learn how to look on the bright side of things, and it need to be reprogrammed at your subconscious.

It will do wonders for you and your life. You will soar. Trust me!!!

People with hyperhidrosis can suffer from excessive sweating under ANY conditions. It may have nothing to do with how you feel emotionally or even your body temperature. The sweating is caused by overactive sweat glands that you have no control over.. it sucks!

For sweaty hands, armpits, and feet there is prescription antiperspirant called "Drysol" thats works very well for some people. You apply the medicine at night just before you go to sleep. After several treatments, sweating should cease for up to a few weeks!

I have been using this solution for several years but am now considering surgery. The surgery is called "Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy" and involves clamping the nerve connected to overactive sweat glands. The good thing about the surgery is that it is reversible. The clamp on the nerve can be removed. Side effects most often include recompensatory sweating which means that sweat may be rerouted to another part of the body. However, recompensatory sweating is just a possibility. If the operation is 100% successful, you may be lucky enough to not have any recompensatory sweating and you will sweat regularly like someone without hyperhidrosis.
