The longer you continuously sleep for, the longer each REM cycle becomes relative to the three previous light stages of sleep. Therefore, breaking up sleep into many blocks reduces total REM sleep. REM is critical portion of sleep and helps memory and mood control during the day.

I am a deep sleeper and usually dont wake up even if there is a big storm outside which happens a bit. I will go to sleep at midnight and not wake up until 8 hours later.
