As I have become larger in the upper body area, I have discovered that women want to touch me more, smile at me more, ask for my phone number (!), be around me more...

I think it is the single most significant thing you can do to increase your attractiveness, leaving only your personality to work on. Its an upward spiral, for the women who notice you cause you to feel better anyway and your personality will be easier to work on.

Though you should workout for yourself primarily.

And EAT THE PROPER FOODS REQUIRED! DIESEL wrote a cryptgraphic post about bulking up in the H&F section, but try reading it anyway.

Comments?

Wow, Nicholas Hill, I can't believe you haven't figured this out already.

Women are not attracted to your ONLY muscle's, they are attracted to the confidence you gained BY working out.

Whoa, that's exactly what i need to work on. I'm tall and skinny, and my biggest physical drawback is not having a big upper body. I tell myself myself i'm going to lift to attract more women, but that only gets me through about 2 reps... haha.

Nicholas: How often do you lift? Do you do it at the gym? I usually just do curls, shoulder press, and inclined press at home, but i'm probably thinking i need a gym membership.
How long did it take you to see noticeable improvements?

Storm, I posted my routine on the H&F forum about 20 minutes ago. You can have a look there!

I have my own weights set (bench, dumbells)

Don't just work upper-body. Do squats and dead-lifts as well. You won't even get half the results doing upper body only.

Squats put enormous strain on your nervous system allowing for more muscle growth all over your body.

Don't cheat yourself.

It seems as if Drow has beat me to my response.

It is always funny to see a person who only work out the "dateable" muscles.
How will you look when the chic finally gets you naked?
If your legs look like noddles, I don't care how buffed your upper bod is, you will look strange. Matter-of-fact, you will look even more strange than if you didn't work out at all. Improve your overall body appearance.

And Please, stop skipping the stairmaster and treadmill. A big guy that looks in shape on the outside but can't run a couple of miles in under 20 minutes just won't cut it. Cardio also improves your sexual performance. You tend to be a lot less lazy in the sack when your heart muscles are pumped.

I think I should also point out that I do a LOT of cycling! I cycle for 20 minutes in 6 days out of every 7 (to get to Uni!) and, obviously, I come back again.

Most of the time its easy, sometimes I race.

My personal best is 5 miles in 15 minutes.

Would someone like to instruct me on how to do deadlifts?
And I don't know how to do squats properly either. Hence why I've avoided them up until now.

Reading articles and books on weight lifting is confusing to me because I know nothing of the terminology and even when asking, get very poor answers.

I too cycle quite a bit. Going at least 50-60 miles a week. I have also recently started yoga which is more strenuous than I previously thought, plus the female to male ratio is at least 2 to 1 if not 3 to 1 sometimes.

For what it is worth I read somewhere recently that the sexiest muscle women like on men is their abs. So lets not neglect those situps guys.

And if you do the sit-ups you must not neglect working your back muscles at least equally as much. Muscles antagonizes each other so if you do a lot of sit-ups without strengthening your erector spinae muscles in your back, your posture will be off. In other words, you may walk with a hunch in your back.

The best way to work-out is to body build. You want to give all of the muscles in your body attention. If you have enough time to post, you have enough time to body build. You don't have to look like the Hulk or any thing just be well proportioned and chiseled.

This post is GREAT! As if guys need any more encouragement to only work on upper body. As it is, most guys are AOBB's, "Arms-Only Body Buidlers." well, technically that makes them "arm builders", I work at a gym, and believe me, every girl I talk to likes to mention how guys don't look good when they have a big upper body, yet one looks down and sees the "Pollo Loco Legs", it looks retarded, and as someone said, you will look bad when you get naked. We all see those guys at the gym who just do bench press and curls and are huge on top. It seems moday is "National Bench Press Day."

And if you do the sit-ups you must not neglect working your back muscles at least equally as much. Muscles antagonizes each other so if you do a lot of sit-ups without strengthening your erector spinae muscles in your back, your posture will be off. Actually, one does not need to work on the lower back muscles as much as the abs, unless there is a muscular inbalance that is causing the postural deviation. Unless one has tight abs and weak lower back, which is only a small percentage of the population. Most people, because of lack of use, or too much sitting at work/school, and driving, have tight hip flexors and tight back muscles, which tends to pull your pelvis forward and cause an excessive arch in the lower back. The opposing muscles, the abs and glutes are weak/long, so more work would be needed on those than on the tight lower back muscles, which wouldneed more (corrective) stretching.

The best approach is to to strenghten the muscles in the core (29 muscles that support the region of the abs/lower back), that way you are working not only on abs, but on deep mucles in the posterior that support the lumbar region of the vertebrae.

So the main point is, work on your entire body, but don't over-do it , specially on overdeveloped and/or tight muscles.

Those of you hating on people who concentrate mainly on upper body really have no idea what you are talking about.

1. If you do have a well bit upper-body and are lacking somewhat in the lower body, ladies will not notice unless you where shorts. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but whenever I go out at nights to a club or something I always where pants and the ladies are never able to tell.

Okay, and then those of you talking about what happens when you get naked. Well, if you think about it most men don't look good naked except for the people in hollywood and that is why they are there and like the top ten percent of the male population. Think about this...imagine almost any average guy or partially muscular guy naked under a light - not a pretty picture.

If you have a nice well built in proportion upper body...women drool. I too have caught chicks staring at my chest - these tend to be younger girls who haven't developed their checking other people discretly skills yet.

How bout this?

Hey guys,
I see advice here for guys that have pencil legs and wanna get big up top.

But what about guys, me for example, that already have naturally Large and Muscular legs due to genetics (thanks dad!).

Seriously tho, if i continue doing squats (been doing them for a few weeks now), my pants wont fit me in the leg area. I have really thick and strong legs, without workin them out. I must say, tho, they look reaaaaal good in a pair of nice jeans.

My upper body is well built too, but will doing squats give large legged guys as much of an advantage in the upper body as a pencil legged guy?

Thanks for ur help!

I find it funny when I'm in the gym and guys are working out in tank tops and what not and think their **** hot. I just point and laugh, why have that kinda muscle (which if your a body builder is pretty, but useless) if your a student and not a fighter or competitor..just to impress the ladies...gez, get a room.

If you want to build yourself up, do the 3 main lifts; bench, dead and squat. The more muscles you use, the more testosterone release is stimulated, and the bigger you get.
And people, as someone said before, do some running, cause theres always someone bigger around with mates :p .

The cycling...very good for the quads (make sure you stretch them out, or the limited range of motion of the exercise with tighten your hamstrings and quads up), but not overly good for the old CV system. Go for runs. The guy in wales..I reckon you live 3-4 miles from the uni, same with me. Although I don't run in (I do cycle cause I do need to build my quads up for power), I do walk in and try and jog a bit.

Let me clarify a bit, guys!

First, let me be honest.

I started working out about a year ago, simply because I wanted girls to stop in the street, point at me, and watch their clothes automatically and wonderfully fall off their body. That was my motivation.

Over time, however, I noticed a rather nice side effect of working out - it gave me streams of confidence. I couldn't care less about thinking twice. This, I liked a lot.

So my motivation has since changed. I am in it for the streams of confidence, and I want some pride in my physique.

I agree girls love upper body strength. I have a great upper body from my abs up since I've been lifting since I'm 15. I'll also thank my ultra-fast metabolism. My legs aren't so great though. They are fairly strong, but not big enough, IMO.

One thing to know, though: girls absolutely love broad shoulders. Throw in some swimming or running into your routine to get those. I have been swimming since age 8 and it gives you the perfect body so I recommend swimming.

I've also been lifting since I was 15, and only in the last 1/3 year have I been really getting buff (beforehand I was fat, but I have been burning fat and gaining muscle for about 2 years). I'm going to get a couple empty kegs, one pony and one regular, and fill em with water, and use them for working out during the summer. Clean and presses with those with water sloshing around inside will be one helluva challenge, but awesome for working EVERY muscle group, plus the stabilizers.

And yes, as I've gotten buffer, I've gotten great results with girls. Not to mention one guy compared me to Mark McGwire :-D
