Studying. The word that we love to hate. "It's a waste of time", "I have better things to do!", "why do I need to know this stuff anyway?". All typical high school answers. Listen up. Getting good grades now is soo important, you have no idea.
High school is the foundation of your life. Do you want to start on a shaky foundation? I know I dont. I know a man doesnt. When you graduate, if you dont have the grades- colleges arent going to want you. If colleges dont want you, business doesnt want you. If business doesnt want you, then you have no job, no money, no life.
How can anyone say that its a waste of time? Is knowlege a waste of time? Would you rather play video games all day? Well yeah, I know you would- you have to change that atittude.
Dont tell me you have no time. You know what my school hours are like? I have to be in school 7:00 AM and i leave at 5:20 every day. (except friday- I get out at 1:30) I still find the time to study. I am 100% sure that you wont regret taking a little time to review and pull up your grades. Your parents will definitely be really proud, and trust me this leads to longer curfew, etc..
I know. I've been there- last year i had a 75 average on the whole year. It was my freshman year, and even though the colleges are more forgiving for that year, it will still haunt me and i cant get into any of the more upstanding Colleges. But you know what? I have a 92 average now, and just by my grades pulling up, my whole life is going up. Anyways.....I'm done rambling...here are the tips that I found helped me.

Do your homework Trust me on this one- Just by doing it, you save yourself a lot of studying time and you also save yourself some bag marks from the teachers. And I dont mean copy it from a friend, in the end your just screwing yourself. Come on, it only takes 30 minutes TOPS to do all of your homework.

Review for 20-30 minutes every night. Even if you dont have a test coming up in three weeks, still review. And if you have a test, NEVER save studying for the last night, cramming is a terrible way to study. If you cram you forget everything long term(finals..) If you save it for the last night, youll stay up late and your likely to be too tired the next day. A good way that I've found to remember things for tests is to read the information and summarize it on a paper. By writing it down you remember much more...

Write notes Write down everything that your teachers say. Just by writing it down, you remember it much much more. And when you have a test, you can just whip out your notes and review. With no notes, you have nothing to review. Your own notes serve you much better than those of your peers.

Organize everything. Dont just Throw random pieces of papers on your bag. Get a notebook/binder and section it all. If you dont do this you can save yourself a serious headache when you lose important notes. Get a folder too. Keep your notes so you have them for finals.

In Class. Participate. If your not sure about something, raise your hand. Dont be shy, no one cares. If you know an answer, raise your hand. Dont doodle or daydream, if you do the information is just flying over your head.

Get Enough Sleep. If you dont get enough sleep at night, your probably going to doze off during classes. Its harder to focus in class as well when your tired. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

Study with other people. By studying with other people, preferably smarter ones, You get double the information. DO NOT do this if its with your close friends who you know your likely to just mess around the whole night. Also, dont be afraid to call up a tutor if you find a class hard. I used to have a math tutor, and he helped ma a lot to get on track.

Not too much at once I dont know about you guys, but after a while of reading my damn chem textbook i get really bored. Try not to study each subject for too long at a time, rather spread it out- 15 minutes a night, etc...

Prioritize your time. Save gaming and TV and all of that stuff for LAST. Break out of the habit of just coming home and sitting your ass down in front of the TV. Get home and go straight into your study room.....

Set the Mood. DO NOT study in a loud place. DO NOT study in front of the TV. Dont study in a place like your kitchen or in the school cafeteria, or your bedroom. Dont study in bed either, your likely to go to sleep. Find a quiet room in your house, shut the door, and make sure it has enough lighting and a good temperature. Too hot is bad and it gets you tired. I personally like to play some jazz in the background as I study, it helps me focus. Find what works best for you.

---Try to get copies of old exams from your teachers. Figure out the way they test. Ask older students about the teachers.

-Make friends with your teachers also. I've found that talking about music to them is a great way to get them to like you (if you listen to good music)

-Dont be the class clown. The teacher will hate you, and theyll just take points off your report card for bad behavior. Its stupid.

well- heres what helped me, hopefully it will help you guys out to.
- If anyone else has anything else to add, feel free. I will continuously update this throughout the week.

Mods- I know this is a tip but i feel it would better serve its purpose in the HS forum.

Thanks for the tips Layla.

For me, nothing beats studying in a public library. The facility is quite nice, it's quiet, and it's really difficult to get sidetracked.

Also, curb your AIM time. I know from experience that this can get VERY VERY time consuming.

Remember focusing on the long term as well. You have to see a purpose to all this studying. Pick a goal and don't take your eyes off it.

Good post homework does NOT take 30 minutes. I'm sorry but unless you're in a retarded class or something, it takes at least an hour or 2

I would agree with this, except for me i would say its longer. I have school 8:15 till 4 every day and at least three days a week have to stay behind for sport, at least until 6, someitmes till 9. In addition, i live an hour away from my school. This means that i have very little time.

I have 8 lessons a day, normally 5 or 6 of those are teaching, some are double. That gives me 3 or 4 homeworks a night. None of my homeworks are short, most of them are to write essays. I do not see how i could do them in 30 mins.

This guy is 15 years old. He doesn't take hard courses. So he only has 30 min of homework a day.

We are older and take harder courses so we would have more homeowkr naturally. I stay up until 2 AM everyday doign homeowkr.

Yeah....This is just how it is for me. Next year with AP courses and whatever I'll probably have more.

BTW, my school hours are excluding sports.

One of the best study tips I could give you: Listen to Classical Music. Yes, Bach, Tchaikovsky (One of my favorites), Strauss, all of those. Not only can it be very adventurous (Take Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty, for example), but it clears your mind more efficiently than almost anything else can. Just lay aside your rock music or your radio for 2 or 3 days and listen to anything by those guys, and you will see an improvement in your studying and memory.

The effects are so amazing, I actually listen to it while playing video games now. I die much less, I am more calm and collected with my fighting style, and I generally kick ass.

i dont know what it is exactly, but I am in my senior year of highschool taking 5 AP level courses and I never have more than an hour of homework or so while maintaining an "A" average. i'm not sure what it is....maybe i'm efficent with the time that I actually spend doing work, or maybe i get much less work than you guys for some inexplicable reason. I've always been one to work smarter, not harder, so i'd figure out how i can complete tasks in a fast, but still high quality way so that i could goof off later.

um....how do you do it? I have 4 APs. Just physics takes like 1 hour maybe a little less, and AP Calc bc takes like 1 hour AT LEAST cuz I study and stuff.
